    I turned 13 in 1980. I grew up listening to records and tapes. When CDs came out the promise was: No more skips or record noise; No more tape hiss, wow or flutter. Nobody was thinking, “Golly, I think I’m going to miss these old media artifacts.”
    This whole phenomenon is similar to the evolution of guitar (and other instrumental) amplification- when solid state emerged and began to replace tube amplifiers, few people thought they were going to miss tubes. Tubes are fragile, they degrade and need to be replaced and can be expensive. Even so, tube amps have made quite a comeback.
    Ok, I’m going to eat some Rice Krispies and listen to an LP.

    • @Tyrell_Corp2019

      Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them. - Brian Eno

      Solid state amps never replaced tube amps in any meaningful capacity, pretty much every band you can think of continued using tube amps long after the introduction of SS amps. It's not like synths where analog pretty much disappeared after digital synths took over.

      Heh -- I having actually grown up in the 80s, and having gotten started on a Tascam 4-track mixing down to cassettes -- I was thrilled when I got my first DAT machine to mix down to and was eventually able to record into Sound Tools (this was before Pro Tools). The noise, the warble, lost of high freuqency, the frustration knowing the tapes I made for my friends didn't sound as good as the originals, all of that drove me bonkers.
      That said, there was something to the discipline of recording to tape, and trying to work around its sonic limitations, that was very educational.

    • @LETTMusic
      @LETTMusic ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Fun fact, most of the Fez OST was done on NI Massive. Lots of the Dimension Expander reverb, a good bit of nice white noise blended in, and a really masterful use of the 'TrR' (Trigger Random) modifier macro applied to parameters like pitch and filter cutoff. You can find it on YT if you search up Disasterpeace Music Workshop FEZ. It's a lovely video that reveals a lot about the sound design approach for FEZ.
      He put out another workshop on Organic Synthesis this past year 2022, and he's still heavily using NI Massive. Just thought it'd be worth sharing because a lot of people think Massive is overly cold and digital, but it just proves that any synth in the hands of the right sound designer can be brought to life and sound analog.

    • @KidGhost23
      @KidGhost23 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @LETTMusic
      @LETTMusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KidGhost23 Haha, I didn't know either, but watching it currently, and it still blows my mind the things he thinks to use to modulate parameters. I mostly use Serum these days, but so many good ideas to pull from how he approaches sound design with utilizing randomness and cross modulation (modulation being modulated by something else, like an LFO rate itself is being modulated by something, that then modulates something else.) I love that he still reps OG Massive all these years later. Everyone thinks of it as the heavy dubstep bass synth, yet he's making beautiful expressive chiptuney sounds out of it.

    Sounds like an omori pedal
    It was really interesting to learn about these effects I heard before without knowing what they were, this pedal is pretty cool

    This is interestingly musical pedal, aside from everything else that it does. Yes, it is Boards of Canada vibe, but also colours and adds harmonics to various signals in a myriad of different ways. Sometimes it reminds me of Data Bender module, that is also built as signal degradation but it also gets very musical. Love combining both with a nice reverb.

    I don't understand music theory. I don't really understand most of the mechanics of this really. Yet I know sounds and feels and vibes. It's almost unexplainable how these songs you're playing do infact sound like something I heard 15 or 20 years ago. Beautiful how music (new and old) can place so much feeling and memory. Truly more proof that music is something special

    That's crazy shit right there. I'm 57 and I don't remember how ANY of my old VHS sounded. Except maybe Debbie does Dallas. If you know, you know.

    Awesome sound mods; like watching the movie Legend with Tangerine Dream's sdtk on dad's old VHS tape deck back when I was a kid...

    Thanks for the great video. Someone was just talking me about this at a show. My son (like many younger producers I think 😃) are really into these lo-fi sounds. Thanks again! 👍🏻

    If your synth touchstone is a 70's educational program title sequence and my synth touchstone is a 70's educational program title sequence... I have a suspicion that for whatever reason, it inspired many others out there. About the pedal. Wonderful sounds. Lusty case design. While I love the extra functionality of hidden features, understand the price and packaging reasons for hidden features; I absolutely loath switching away from my ears and fingertips to learn yet another machine's hidden features.

      It almost has the same feeling as the generation loss pedal. Like a nostalgic melancholy.

    You gotta be kidding me!! An efx module to make tech sounds before they got better!! Im 61 years old and I never missed the the pops and cracks coming from vinyl records, nor hisses from tapes! Nor do i miss drop outs!! Even though when mp3 started being en vogue and knew that there were some losses, in very happy to have music coming out of my itunes or whereever on line bluetoothing it EVERYWHERE😂
