CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. This sounds incredible. Never got to grow up in the 80s for this sort of sound, but I have a weird nostalgia for retro sounding audio technology. Got an original Tascam 4-track for my birthday this year, I absolutely love it
Heh -- I having actually grown up in the 80s, and having gotten started on a Tascam 4-track mixing down to cassettes -- I was thrilled when I got my first DAT machine to mix down to and was eventually able to record into Sound Tools (this was before Pro Tools). The noise, the warble, lost of high freuqency, the frustration knowing the tapes I made for my friends didn't sound as good as the originals, all of that drove me bonkers. That said, there was something to the discipline of recording to tape, and trying to work around its sonic limitations, that was very educational. I don't miss my Tascam 4-track, but I hope you enjoy yours! (Although I did pick oine up to back up my old 4-track tapes to a DAW)
This is making me think about these 'imperfection simulators' and how we tried to listen through these sounds when they were part of our equipment, and now we try to listen TO these sounds when our equipment can render sound 'perfectly'.
Be aware of a slight, but noticeable latency. I sent mine back because of this. However, I love what many are doing with this pedal, who can ignore this issue. I'm very happy for those who can make it work for them.
You could still use it for sampling and sound design so it would still work. I would still say they should offer a discounted price for the limitation..
@@mikedegrazia absolutely one could...I'm very sad it didn't work for me. I do use Aberrant's Sketchcassette to add this type of effect, post recording or programming. That way I can record my faster guitar phrases without any latency and treat them accordingly.

Dude. This is my new favorite. I was instantly inspired with this library and love the vibe of it. I appreciate all the work you put into it and it's gonna be fun to implement into many tracks.

Fun fact, most of the Fez OST was done on NI Massive. Lots of the Dimension Expander reverb, a good bit of nice white noise blended in, and a really masterful use of the 'TrR' (Trigger Random) modifier macro applied to parameters like pitch and filter cutoff. You can find it on YT if you search up Disasterpeace Music Workshop FEZ. It's a lovely video that reveals a lot about the sound design approach for FEZ. He put out another workshop on Organic Synthesis this past year 2022, and he's still heavily using NI Massive. Just thought it'd be worth sharing because a lot of people think Massive is overly cold and digital, but it just proves that any synth in the hands of the right sound designer can be brought to life and sound analog.
@@KidGhost23 Haha, I didn't know either, but watching it currently, and it still blows my mind the things he thinks to use to modulate parameters. I mostly use Serum these days, but so many good ideas to pull from how he approaches sound design with utilizing randomness and cross modulation (modulation being modulated by something else, like an LFO rate itself is being modulated by something, that then modulates something else.) I love that he still reps OG Massive all these years later. Everyone thinks of it as the heavy dubstep bass synth, yet he's making beautiful expressive chiptuney sounds out of it.

This is interestingly musical pedal, aside from everything else that it does. Yes, it is Boards of Canada vibe, but also colours and adds harmonics to various signals in a myriad of different ways. Sometimes it reminds me of Data Bender module, that is also built as signal degradation but it also gets very musical. Love combining both with a nice reverb.
