    "If you can't film a beautiful documentary with an FS7 or an FS5, you're not going to be able to do it with an FX6 or an Alexa LF." Well said, Luc. You have a gift for being candid without being insulting.

      I think the key is ease of use! I used some absolutely horrid cameras for projects in college, but I managed to get really great images out of them by working around the shortcomings. These older cameras can still shoot with incredible quality, but the number of things you'll need to consider or potentially work around is of course going to be higher vs a newer, more technically advanced system.

      As an fs7 owner.. id say yes it is OK, but it was always waiting in the wings for a smaller af version that is the fx6. My opinon is the fs7 is quite a barrier to shooting fliud doc work vs the fx6. But of course for certainl looks.. like hunting manual focus it is fine

    Please don’t stop making videos outside or on-location like this. The fact you aren’t using LED lights and acoustic panels like every other TH-camr is what makes you more credible, aside from the fact you are a full time DP. I am just beginning with my hobby as a cinematographer with my LUMIX S5iix, and I’m just glad I found your channel before I went to crazy with ‘gear’ on the advice of other TH-camrs! Stay warm out there in the Arctic!

      I'm sorry, but sound is more or as important as the picture, and good lighting is the trick to good results. Even for landscape stuff, lighting ends up being the weather and time of day chosen

    100% agree. I picked up a FS7 mk1 from a DP who upgraded to the FX6. It was pretty much a entire kit with minus the v-lock batteries, lenses and audio gear. All of which I already owned.
    I've been using the FS7 filming interviews, conferences, sports and weddings. The last 3 videos on my channel are all shot with the FS7.
    It's fun using a purpose built video camera that I don't have to baby around like its brand new. One thing, the ND filters are a little funky when they click over, nothing I'm worried about though.

    I bought an FS700 used, upgraded it so I can shoot 12-bit 4K raw, bought an F55 used a year later, and about two years later bought a brand new FX30. The FX30 was rented out before I had gotten it in the mail. People are excited about new cameras, but unless you're renting, you can get as good or better image quality from used cameras, as you've said. I just directed a feature-length documentary in Mexico, and we shot it with two FX30s as the B cams and an FS7 II as the A cam. We shot with a kit lens, a Zeiss photo lens, and a set of Fujinon MK lenses. It was an awesome time shooting with 3 cameras regardless of what they were. Also, a week or two ago, I bought a used F3.

    here is my take, if you have a big grew and a large budget then you don't need the latest camera gear, just experienced lighting and good lenses. if it's just you and your lonesome tryna get things done, buy a FX3 so you can let the camera do the heavy lifting so you can focus more on the story and the image.

    Hey Luc, thanks for the valid points on buying new gear. I agree, it makes sense to get used gear which can serve well. I personally invested almost 10 years ago into Fuji system for photography and then slowly transitioned towards video work. This year I decided to take filmmaking work seriously, so I sold it all, as I am making a leap of faith into Sony system planning to get an fx3 - found best price in Thailand /new minus tax, for price of used one elsewhere - buying in Asia makes alot of sense/ so Im going to invest into the filmmaking part of my creative journey soon.

    I love this vid. So first of all thank you. I’ve been a very casual TH-camr over the last few years but I wanna step it up in the new year by filming stuff around my local town for a TH-cam channel. I want to call them docs but I’m sure they’ll be far from that. My point is that I have an old dlsr and I’ve been looking at upgrading but didn’t even consider the types of cameras you mentioned. I will definitely have a look at used stuff and although a cinema camera won’t suit my style as I’ll be more vlogging and adding timelapse stuff to the channel but it’s really made me think. Thanks again. ATB

Depreciation is crazy at the minute. Thanks for the video, a lot of solid points there - I appreciate that you took the time to put it together so nicely.
    One point I missed though: You didn't tell what the reason was, that they filmed a show like Trafficked on such an old camera. Sure it's possible, but was it done for monetary reasons? The DP had a bunch of them lying around and wanted to squeeze out a few more years? Availability of spare parts, if sth breaks at remote places? Just because it's possible doesn't mean you have to avoid an fx6 or fx9 on a big show like this...

    Lots of good advice here. This year I inherited quite a bit of money, so I was able to invest in new equipment, but I bought most of it second-hand. In fact, I have a new customer that I have bought from who would like to cooperate and who would possibly like to rent what I have bought should he need it. I have saved a lot this way and at the same time made some new contacts. I would just like to add that I have never bought really expensive equipment and that I am in a place that is more of a hybrid between photo but mostly film. Thank you for sharing.

    Hi buddy, I recently sold my FS7 to buy an FX6 for the reason that the FS7 is quite heavy "12 pounds" and I have to watch my back when I use a gimbal for some music videos and I also wanted the FX6 to have the RAW option without having to buy the FS7 adapter. But I'll be honest, I miss the FS7 for being a great and robust camera. Obviously I'm 10 pounds lighter now with the fx6 in action, full frame, 4k DCI 120 fps is a great tools for my workflorw, but at the end of the day the FS7 is a winner camera. Everything you said is very true. Greetings.

    As filmmakers, it's very easy for us to fall prey to the hype beast of modern camera companies' marketing techniques. *Especially* young filmmakers, who really believe that the newest, latest, and greatest will put them ahead of the pack. To quote a cinematography legend: "I'd shoot it on an iPhone if it suited the story."
    To young filmmakers, I'd recommend renting and testing lots of used cameras, and figuring out what you like- not what Sony or Canon tell you you should like.

    I'm someone who is primarily shooting stills/photos... and after buying roughly ten Sony mirrorless cameras over the past ten years I'm now using two ten-year old cameras (Sony A6000 & Sony A77II). They both have Eye-AF and Face-Detect and produce 24mp images (which is plenty for me). I'm also using a ten-year old Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8 on the A6000 & variety of Minolta and Sony glass on the A77II. I've not had one person look at my photos and comment that I'm using 'old tech'.
    The guidelines and contexts that you frame in this video are succinctly brilliant and very practical. Thanks for putting in the time to make this video and share it with fellow creatives!

    I picked up a Sony A9 in fair condition from KEH over three years ago for $2100 that didn’t come with the box or manual or anything. When it showed up it looked brand new and it only had 2100 on the shutter count. It’s been my action sports camera that still works perfectly to this day. I’ve been eyeballing a Sony FS5 mark two on Facebook marketplace for $1300 that comes with 18-105 lens and two batteries. But I decided since I am just getting into videography to build either my Sony A7rv or A7iv into a running gun video rig. I bought all the accessories and built up my A7iv and turned it into my dedicated video rig and I still use my A7rv for my portraits and family photos I take. I figured instead of buying a dedicated video camera just built one up and work with what I got. My main business is portraits but I want to and start offering videography to my clients. great video by the way I just found your channel and I am a couple in of your work and I really enjoy your content.

    I shoot almost daily with the Sony FS7 M1 and it's just such a great camera on so many levels - bullet proof, great feature set, reliable and solid image quality even in 2023. I honestly don't think it's a great ENG or handheld camera, but obviously it serves you well in this capacity. Yes, equipment does matter to a degree - I love my Canon C100 M2 but it's codec and lack of 4k have really limited what I can do with it. Still at the end of the day, content is king!!

    The big difference between old hi-end cameras and new is their size and weight. I bought Sony FX3 mainly because in its tiny size it can deliver the same quality that before would be achieved only with bulky pro level gear. If I'd be truck driver :) I'd also looked to second hand pro cameras, but it's not reaaly fun to carry all this stuff by yourself.

    My University has several FS5 with Shoulder rigs and F4 18-105mm Lenses.
    And this setup totally works with the Audio gear and lighting tech they have. They may not have flow tech tripods, but the sachtler they have are solid and they do the work, as most of the gear.
    Yes, the autofocus from the FS5 sucks and most newer Sonys will get you a better image, but it's totally fine to do aftermovies, interviews, docs etc.

    Great advice. It's a terrible symptom of vacuuming up too much TH-cam content that makes people feel like the gear they have is inadequate or they can't go out and shoot something until they buy [insert gadget here]. I like the fact that you are prioritising the actual content: what is in front of the lens, not what is behind it. I get caught up in gear nonsense too often, but I know some other doc filmmakers who couldn't care less about gear. One I am thinking of has been nominated for a lot of awards this year for his debut feature doc which had a global theatrical release, but I had to explain to him only recently (and long after he finished that film) what an ND filter was. The tech is the last thing on his mind which is very refreshing.

    I'm currently working on a short film and a documentary. I'm using the FS7 mark 1 which I got used for about £1000, its been great for work and yeah it might be fun to use a Komodo on the short film or an fx9 for the documentary but then there would be less money for building the set for the film and less money for travel and graphics/animation on the doc. The set will make way more difference than a Komodo and the travel and the animation will make far more difference than the FX9.

    thank you. I'm using Sony A6400 (actually I have four of them) and I primary do conferences and podcasts. They are small, reliable, cheap, have excellent 4K and autofocus, Slog2, 3, HLG, Cine and even though I get snoffs from Full Frame people, they are amazing in low light. I was disappointed with full frame a7iii as I thought low light performance would be much better. Imagine my shock when I had to pixel-peep 4K footage to see the difference. Then I got newest a6700 that goes 4K 120fps and has more dynamic range and in body stabilization. I returned it as it was much noisier (faster sensor and it seems it's really hard to get +30fps 4K that is as good in low light as a6400 is). Every time in the last 2 years that I buy another body I'm returning it and sticking to my reliable a6400 tiny apsc cameras. Never ever did any of my clients say that I need Full Frame or that my footage is not good enough, actually everyone is praising how sharp and vibrant the materials I deliver are.

      also give ZV-E10 a try, same sensor but less noise for video with better software, there is a comparison on yt. I can shoot footage with Arri rolloff on a package that costs $1k, the price of a single fuji 16mm f/1.4 aps-c lens!

    • @PeterSchramm3
      @PeterSchramm3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am considering a Sony A6700 because it can shoot 4K 10 bit. So you think the 8 bit A6400 is much better? Did you try shooting with the A6700 in 10 bit and colour correcting? I guess noise is noise and colour correcting won’t get rid of that?

    • @PeterSchramm3
      @PeterSchramm3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How do you deal with not having a head phone jack on the Sony A6400? I see it has a microphone jack. Are you able to visually see the audio levels? Also, I assume you record audio separately?

    • @davemorphling7432
      @davemorphling7432 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      zv-e10 (same sensor as 6400) has headphone jack, both have visual audio levels, a6700 is not reliable for long shoots as it overheats, 8-bit of zv-e10/6400 requires less computing so less heat. Noise should be roughly the same, but A6700/FX30 are a better option for higher ISOs up to 3200, aps-c is bad for anything after that.
      Difference between 10-bit & 8-bit sony is:
      - improvement in highlight colors thus details e.g. when shooting sky
      - slight improvement in shadow/highlight rolloff
