iv been watching your vids for about 2 months consistent and love them, i was drunk last night and brought a 2001 ktm 250 EXC off facebook market because of you :DDD finally own a proper bike and am cleaning her up :)
That's an early '80s bike that's when Honda made really really good machines Joe we have all the faith in you I say restore and be surprised how much it's really worth fully restored we go for really good money Love your channel Merry Christmas and be safe God bless
Early 80’s is one of Honda’s best eras. I hope you can save this one! I have a fully restored 1981 XR80 and fixed countless other 80’s and 100’s. They are a blast. So many of the parts are cheap and readily available but those stators are big $$. This one is worth it especially if you can find a parts bike.
@@wesbailey4968 Yes just did it myself. I had picked it up for $450 and a parts bike for $200. Frame was powder coated, engine rebuilt, suspension redone, and new plastics. Since I sold off the rest of the parts from the parts bike I actually only have $1000 into it including purchasing the bikes. I would definitely recommend picking up a plastics kit from maier on eBay. Makes it look so much better even if you don’t do anything to the frame.
@@wesbailey4968 I bought an 1982 xr100 from a kid that was getting a 250. Absolutely nothing is missing. Always starts on first kick. Best part is, that family owned A TON of old Honda dirtbike and quads. It has aftermarket carb. But i also got the original one, also Came with the original service manual aswell. How much did you pay for your 81?
I’m like 20 minutes in, you just took the side cover off the motor, if you revive this thing and actually get this motor running again you’d be an absolute frickin legend lol, love the videos! I’ve learned quite a bit thank ya 🤙🏽
I remember every kid and his dog had an XR80 or an XR100 like that. They were everywhere people were riding Dirtbikes...those places are all but gone now, either housing developments or Vineyards now...
I just bout my first dirt bike. A KX100. I have learned alot bout maintenance an general knowledge just watching your videos. Thanks an keep up the good work!
Look up "electrolysis with washing soda" for that flywheel. =Should clean up and can be used. These XR75, XR80 and XR100 are great light trail bikes. Very popular and fun.
@@lbdrummer3 They have WD40 rust remover and another product in gallons now (Menards) - but those take longer and you need to brush it more. If you have the time or many small parts these product maybe cheaper, but they also tint the metal to a brown-grey.
My 2nd bike. Parents bought me a 1980 Yamaha MX80. After 2 seasons of misery, they took pity and got me a brand new XR100. It was 1982 and the bike was a NOS 1981. I rode the snot out of it for 5 years (what seemed like an eternity at that age).
Got a 1980 XL 125s I semi restored, as in got it running, great little bike not bad for q bottle whiskey, was a barn find as well. They are classics for sure!
Part it out and make your money back. Nothing wrong with that. Still, I did enjoy watching this video on the teardown process. Thanks again for your time.
If you have a blasting cabinet you could clean all that up after you run it through a parts cleaner. Then blast it lightly. Good job keep up the videos.
When you get a motor that is that locked up, you can fill the lower end with diesel. Let it sit for a few days, the diesel will remove some to most of the buildup. Which helps uplock the lower end. Just make sure you drain the bottom end good and flush it once with used or fresh oil. Great channel and hope that helps.
This is the perfect bike to do a rebuild. Almost vintage, it's a honda xr 100 what can go wrong. Definitely gonna have to dump a bit of money into it but looks nice an original
These little 99cc Honda engines were used a lot in the CB100n's in the UK. A great tough and reliable engine. Such a shame this one is in such bad condition.
About a year and 1/2 ago I bought my 17yr son his first dirt bike it was a 1979 xr185 very rare. Only one year the guy did a resto on it it was beautiful but mostly Al original we went to wind rock for weekend to ride the trails he went to the camp ground gas station and couple older guys was out front asking about it tell my son how rear some of the parts are to find. As he went to leave he noticed that the right side numbers plate was gone so those assholes stole it and I’ve look for over a year to replace it. Nice bike
Oh man that is in good condition for sure and I fixed up one of those in 2001 or so it ran nice after a total engine rebuild. Really fun bikes and fairly dependable.
Hell yea man I like it better then watching someone open all new parts from all different manufacturers to just put on. You show a bit of the struggle of the real life busted and worn out stuff mice poo
Hey Joe, split those cases and clean and lube the snot out of everything, polish the crank , mains , wrist pin bearing etc, with a piece of very fine Emory cloth and keep it super wet with some oil while polishing. Fix the valve, lap em etc , I would replace the piston and go atleast a half mm over . Also make sure u take the piston with u to the machine shop and tell him to just match it up. Its well worth saving man , very sought after . All these old xrs are tough as nails and super fun . Good luck Joe, hoping to see some more content from this one!!!!!!!
Those screws aren't phillips head screws, they are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and a phillips head screwdriver will strip the heads. The JIS screwdrivers are available online as is the JIS tips for use in impact drivers. I've had a set since 1978 and am glad I found out about 'em.
The reverse-electrolysis method noted below is an excellent solution. Before going that route, soak the flywheel in CLR and see how much progress is made. I think the springs inside are an ignition advance mechanism, similar to the early XR200. Pour Varsol into the crank area until it won’t hold any more. Let it soak and penetrate the bearings in the crank and the transmission. It’s oil based, so it’s a good solution before using oil. I like Rotella 15W40 for these transmissions. Stick with it and you’ll get it running for cheap.
probably the best starter bike ever. It's what I started on, and it was perfect. Right size, not too much power, but more than enough for a kid to have fun on, easy to kick over, very reliable, its a great first bike
This XR100 is in better condition now than most of the old XR's of it's era when I was riding them in the late 80's. No matter what you did top them, they kept going.... I had the '81 250A and a couple of '75 XL125's and a '75 250 motorsport (The clutch on them were a little bit fragile. The socket at the bottom of the clutch shaft cracked so I dropped a 3mm ball from a bearing into the gap and it lasted the 2-3 years I rode it as my daily street thing... It would idle at 400rpm.. you would be listening to it for a couple of secs before realising it stalled. I have a 250A motor minus head sitting in the garage alongside my IT200s, YZ250 '97 & '99.
Joe i know the basis of this channel but i think you should do a full restoration on this one. When done you can have a great piece of history or sell it and make buku money
I had a 94 xr100 was a great bike they're reliable and bulletproof I put at least 100,000 miles on mine before it blew up could ride it all week on one tank of gas

I’m a teenager with the 82 one. Mine’s not got any of the plastic pieces but I’m working on making it run again. I’m hoping it can be a fun first bike.
I had a brand new silver xr 75 when l was a kid. The cr125 elsinore was huge but that xr 100 was do-able. l got the Yamaha Mx-100 instead because my dad saved a couple 100 bucks in the early 70s and that was a house payment back then. good times.
XR100’s are fantastic bikes and a lot of fun. Big enough for adults and they are a high giggle factor to ride. It will be worth spending money to fix it all up!
Joe,Im a long time dirt bike rider and the 3rd bike I have around 8or9 years old was-->an XR-75..The color of the tank an side covers was silverish gray.Yo it had a stage 2,raceing cam, over size intake+ exhaust valves, step up timeing chain.Resleeved head bored 80-over+the pipe was stock,w/the exception of the short fat baffler..Oh front sprocket was changed out.I think it had 2or3 more teeth then the stock one.And the rear sprocket was stock.I had the carburetor tuned on a dyno.""The bike was super fast"It had an evil steak in it"/Have u ever rode a bike that when u got off it,yur legs was shaking? Well fair to say I stopped rideing it,and told my step dad I wanted another bike.So we sold it,An I ended up with a CR-125 Elsinore.Yessarr
Not surprised all the screws are shot, no one ever uses the right JIS screwdriver bit. Every older Honda I have ever seen has cammed out screws from people using Philips on them.
Looks like it's been under water for 15 yrs . If anything try to save the gas tank ! Most valuable part on it . My cash would be put in the Pacesetter trike . There are some u tube vids on the setter you should see . Good Luck !

Restore it dude. No question. Piece of history and you have most the original parts. Do it little by little if it costs a lot. Seeing that thing come back would be awesome.
hey. some years back my wife and I went to see her uncle. now he always bought stuff cheap and resold it. well this time he had a,,,,, 1971 Honda SL100. wow was it clean, clean, clean, clean. it had 104 miles on it. boy did I want it. but I didn't ask. the next time we went to see him I asked about the Honda. he gave it to some kid he knew and liked!! you know I remember wanting one back when I was 12. that bike was much bigger in size back then LOL
bro,u need to invest in an impact screw driver for the screws around those points instead of trying to drill screws out,i had the identical bike years ago but in a little better shape and it was easy to get it running.i would just part that one out as it does need quite a bit of work
you could definitly save it i have an 81 xr100 as well that i got for $450 a year ago, it was in better condition than that tho, only took a day to get running
Wow its Rough, Maybe it got caught in a flood and soaked for awhile, how could it get so bad in the stator /flywheel any other way,.... I wish you and the XR the best .
