    Been in the plumbing industry since 1989,trained my son to be a plumber at age 17.He worked every summer and off and on when he could during his high School years.Both my wife and myself worked to be able to send him through college.Before he went away to college he told me
    That "being a plumber Just wasn't his dream".I was hurt a little bit when he told me this but respected him for telling me this.He is now selling medical equipment to all the major hospitals here on the west coast.He not only sells the equipment but also supervises the
    Installation's of very expensive complicated machines.later he
    Told me that his training with me
    Has been "invaluable"to his success.He now makes more money than me and and I am Very
    Proud of him!

      any advice? i am going to dropout out of school to get my GED and become a plumber.
      I rather educate myself than waste 2 & half years in school to pursue what I want to do.
      I will become a plumber and master the art of plumbing and with the money I make I will invest in myself and my future for the generations after me.
      How does that sound?
      I am in grade 10th and 16 years of age.
      Any advice would be grateful and helpful.

      @@wolf-fu1pq My advice, stay in School. It's silly to drop out, and besides, they look at your grades when choosing you for a union apprenticeship, which I would recommend you go the union route. It's a much better education, pay, healthcare, safe work environment, etc... You can't join the union until you're 18 anyway. Until then, try to find some shop classes to do or something at your high school if they offer any. The union board looks for stuff like that on your application. You could also look at your local community college. They usually have something to offer for cheap. I know guys who were welding in high school before they got in the union. Check out Roger Wakefield on youtube too. He's a residential plumber, so that might be something that interests you as well, since union is all construction work. Hopefully that helps, good luck.

    Last year I had my worst year since 2009 and I still made 89K. If you are enthusiastic about products and are highly motivated to do your best, even in a crawl space where no one will ever see your work, you have the right attitude to be a plumber. I love going to work every day. I'll be 69 next week and have NO plans to retire. Not long ago a young electrician told me that he could never be a plumber because we have to deal with human waste. Well, sometimes we do. I looked him right in the eye and told him that dealing with shit is no problem for a man. And it isn't.

    Prior to retiring last year, I made $123,000 (2016) doing plumbing service and repairs. This does not include a full benefits package valued at another $15,000 from my employer. (Yes, I did this working for someone other than myself). Plumbing was a great career choice for me for over 40 years. If you are mechanically inclined, like working with your hands, solving problems, and possess “people skills”, you may want to explore a career as a Service Plumber. New construction plumbing has its’ merits as well. Our motto is “We protect the health of a Nation”, and we do.

    You will never go wrong choosing a highly skilled trade. The trade has been good to me and my family. It has allowed us to do some cool things, visit nice places, prepare for retirement and own a home.
    Sadly, I have friends and family who went to college for years and made the mistake of majoring in a field that just does not pay well.
    Trades is where it is at.

    I’m a sophomore in high school and I already know that I want to pursue the field of trades. Where I live in Indiana it’s in such a high demand and and I would love to do hands on stuff while working my job. I am blessed of the opportunity to be able to have to ask questions and gain knowledge of these jobs, my uncle and dad both are in a apprenticeship program and are one year off getting their journeyman’s license in plumbing and I wanna do this cause of the fact that it’s not as hard as I thought it would be able to apply for one considering the certifications needed for it. Even though I advise it, you don’t NEED to be a straight A student be able to attend plumbing school which I think is great. I can’t wait to learn more about this field.

    Hey I'd like to share a true recent story of mine. Might be a bit lengthy comment.
    So my name is Chris, I'm 22 years old, and like most I decided to go to college after high school. I'm currently sitting at 90 credit hours with maybe 18 hours being my intended major (business focusing on accounting). Basically I've wasted almost 3 years in gen-eds and I was starting to lose interest in school because I couldn't study what I wanted which had a crippling effect on me (started skipping class often and just showing up for exams). Just took a semester break and thought about what I really wanted to do since I still had a couple years before finishing my BA. I started looking at trade skills because I found that not only is the money amazing but these are skills that actually do benefit ones self in the real world. I have taken a sudden interest in plumbing and am starting to look for an apprenticeship. I just wish that high schools would also start pushing the importance of trade skills. I really like your approach of pushing the numbers because for the longest time I had believed that it was almost a necessity to go to college, even though its not cut out for many, in order to get a job that I probably wouldnt like and would have just wasted a large portion of my life.

      Gavin Thind Hey man! I put an application in for a family owned plumbing company that I had heard about on the radio. I also asked around to see if anyone knew any plumbers in my area that might hire an apprentice with little experience. I went for the non-union approach, because I didn’t know how to get straight into a union job in my area with zero experience. Smaller businesses tend to care more about their employees and the employees/bosses are probably more friendly. I figured if I hated working for the company, I could stick it out for a year or two and get enough experience to go somewhere else. I actually like my company and my coworkers a lot. I ended up moving an hour away and now I live on the side of a mountain in a rental house with a roommate I found on Craigslist. I made some friends at my job, and at a church, and I visit some friends from my old town occasionally as well.
      Some of my coworkers advise against unions due to the fact you will lose any retirement money you put in if the union shuts down eventually, but the union seems to be what is available in many new construction jobs. I am working in residential service jobs primarily with my company. It’s not so bad and I haven’t run into very many stinky jobs.
      So just ask everyone you know if they know of any plumbers that might hire an apprentice with your level of experience, and if you know of any plumbing companies with good reputations in your area, try to make a good application and resume and submit it to them too.

    • @tony8356
      @tony8356 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I was thinking about applying to a non union but I heard they don’t have retirement plans, benefits and don’t pay as high as unions which I’m not to sure about. Also I heard residential plumbers work life balance isn’t as good

    • @MarlinRoth
      @MarlinRoth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tony8356 Yeah you are definitely right for the most part, but if you can work for a well-established company, you can get all of those benefits. I have 401k matching, insurance, and I would say B+ pay with more potential for higher pay soon. The work-life balance at my job is very good. I will be on rotation for working one weekend every six weeks, but otherwise, I work Monday-Friday and I'm typically off between 3-6pm every day.
      All unions will have retirement plans, benefits, and home-work balance, but the jobs will also suck more and there will be the typical whiny blue-collar guys working there. Unions generally pay more, although be cautious because some unions can collapse and then your retirement plan is affected.

    Hey man, quick question ...
    Day 1 of my first apprenticeship showed me that there is a big chance the guys are scammy. All the calls we went out to were people who's problem hadn't been fixed by them the first or even second time ... and they are pushing really expensive and from what I can tell, unneccesary work.
    My plan is to look for a better looking opportunity but my main concern is that while I have filled out paperwork and given them copies of my social security card and all that, my documentation of hours is a paper time sheet tbey gave me. They have 4 or 4 and a half stars on Google and are in the top rated for the area ... but at this point I'm almost concerned that I'll even be paid for my hours put in.
    Do you by chance have any advice you can offer me for this situation? Is it common for plumbing companies to be shady yet still be high rated on Google, or in the practice of not paying new apprentices? Do you think it's likely they'd be able to get away with or try to get away with not paying me? Thanks so much in advance for any advice you can offer.

      Captain Stinger I’ve been working for a service company that does a lot commercial work and it’s really good for experience but the pay is less than mediocre. When you first start out at a non union company you’re not paid very well but if you gain the skills/knowledge it’s good to leave for another company. My boss keeps all the scrap, tips, and gives pays me by the day. I work 10+ hour shifts nearly every day and don’t get paid for it. A bad plumbing day is about as bad as you can imagine, it means working long hours in a shit covered crawl space cutting out a cast iron pipe with a grinder. Just learn as much as possible because employers will pay you based on your experience and how much money you make for the company. Honestly the best thing to do is get into a Union or plan on working for yourself after you gain enough experience.

      Forget the Service and Repair part 'til you are well versed in how and why the plumbing puzzle is put together. Many layers upon layers in the trade and it all changes with time, codes, elevation and climate. Whats acceptable in one region will make you the laughing stock in another. Housing, apts, light and heavy commercial, process piping, institutional. So much to learn before you dabble into the Mr. Fixit end of the trade.

      The best thing to do is find a plumber that will hire u and stick with it. It takes time. Some people can go to school but I find most kids dont stay in school so the time you would spend in school you could spend that time on a job learning. But it varies by the person. Some people can go to school and tough it out that way. Either way it's a long journey and most young people dont have the patience to put in the time to become a plumber.

      Not true. Non everyone who tries to be a plumber can be a plumber. Just because you go to a trade school. Doesn't mean you can be a plumber.
      People who are non mechanical just can't be plumbers.

      @@Cineraria99 I mean I've seen, talked to, people that are completely at a loss to doing anything mechanical. They couldn't change a tire on a car if their life depended on it. I know one person that can't see in their mind what an inch or a foot is. How would they eve become a plumber. Now the one that cant visualize measurements is extremely smart in the Alzheimer's community. She gives speeches and has made training videos for first responder. Helping them to understand what to look for when showing up on scene.
      A person with dementia or Alzheimer's can get killed very easily because they don't always follow direction.

      can you explained why? What is it so hard on your body?

    • @dvach6352
      @dvach6352 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      your body is constantly being abused. Plumbing is very physical. Ask a Plumber about his scars. I know a guy who lost an eye, and skin off of his leg. Alot of overnights, oncall, hours, and you rarely have days off. There was recently a Plumber killed in Flour Mound, TX because his company was too cheap to pay for proper tunneling. That's how it is in the industry. I've worked nearly 36 hours straight, and that's common. There's a reason alot of people aren't entering the trade. It doesn't pay all that well, and you aren't appreciated. You will have no respect as a Plumber. Do yourself a favor and become an electrician or something in that line of work. Do not become a Plumber. It sucks, and many of us regret ever entering it. As an example; we were told we'd get off for Christmas.
      We didn't get off for Christmas. We have to work Christmas weekend and Christmas day. I did it on Thanksgiving as well. Don't expect breaks in this industry.
