I’m almost as old as hip-hop and everyone in my age group can testify to this. Hip-hop always has room for fads and gimmicks but it never tolerates it for long. Em has been in the game for at least 20 years because he has real talent. Vanilla Ice, YBT, Iggy those types were the gimmicks

Here's what I think the problem is with those that don't except M.
We as a people of color, have been thrown around literally, like "rag dolls".
We've had to claw our way through life just be excepted.
I'm older than hip hop or rap period.
I grew up hearing yt saying it on national T.V......"there are no melinated quarterbacks, becaue they lack the intelligence for the position".
M is an "exception to the rule" just like Doug Williams, Hank Aaron, Jesse Owen's Jackie Robinson.
But, there's no fear of a 100 or more M's.
I did it with Larry Bird and the Magic thing. I had yo admit, Birdman a great athlete.

I am also a hip hop fan (going back decades, before the genre was even called "hip hop"), and an Em fan (among others).
I respect people who respect his talent, even if they aren't a fan specifically of Em - which is fine, there are plenty of mumble rappers (for example) that I'm not a fan of - but imo if you are a true fan of the genre then you have to respect his skills as an MC. You don't have to like him, or listen to him, but to deny him his right to be considered one of the greats is - for me - making your claim of being a hip hop fan weak.
So cheers bro, for being a real one.

I really don't like Lil Wayne but he's another ridiculously talented dude. Someone who I genuinely don't understand the hype about is Drake. His voice is weak, monotone and his delivery is flat. Plus his lyrics are only good because he has 50 ghost writers. Manufactured nonsense.

I grew up on Run DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, Snoop, Ice-T, etc. As time moved forward others were added like TuPac, Big Pun, Biggie, De la Soul, Tribe called Quest, and more. Common is solid, so is Kendrick and Cole. I didn't like Wayne at first, but he's grown on me and (like you) I can't deny the man's skills. Drake ... I don't get. If he *does* have ghostwriters (I don't know if that is true or just rumor) it is hard for me to respect him. In this genre, if you're using ghost writers, then you need to put the mic down because you're not an MC (imo).

@@christiancrews4278The statement that most Eminem fans are not fans of rap stems from an impression coming from the incomparable size of Eminems fanbase. He is one of the biggest artists of all time, so of course a large chunk of those fans are not going to be connected to the same roots as which Eminem musically emerged from. Just like Elvis’s fans didn’t understand the origins of rock n roll, or like Scorsese’s fans are not connected to the culture of American-Italians in New York and thus fans of a well-made mannicotti, or why people who enjoy IKEAS mass-produced furniture necessarily knows what Swedish culture is like. It means nothing, merely that a phenomenon has become so large that it is uprooted from its original point of emergence. Eminem has tried his very best to link his success to those very origins, by wearing clothes with the names of hiphop legends, by rambling a insane list of the very same when being introduced to the hall of fame not to mentiom countless lyrics referencing his influences. But people who really recognize what is authentic in the culture which undoubtedly emerged in a lineage of african diaspora in America, they also recognize that Eminem does this very, very well and deserves recognition for his lifelong dedication to the craft and culture, regardless of the size and sphere of his influence.

He also said “if I was black, I would’ve sold half” in White America. A lot of Em’s fans just love him because he’s a good white rapper, they don’t even like hip-hop and Em knows that. That’s why he doesn’t boast about his sales and whatnot because he knows America’s implicit racism helped him earn that and he actually has integrity and is ashamed of that!

@@new_to_planet4424 Naw man, respectfully, stop with that "implicit racism" sh.t; it wasn't "racism" that got him sales. The fact that he was a white artist - that was nice - exposed large populations of the public who previously had not heard rap or hip hop, to it. I don't dispute the fact that there are Em fans that don't necessarily know/like/listen to the genre as much as others, but a lot of them do - *because* Em introduced them to it.
I was listening to rap (before it was even called hip hop) long before Eminem came into the game. But if you're going to try and say his sales were poppin' because he was white, then why didn't Vanilla Ice have that kind of success? 3rd Base? Even the Beastie Boys, who were arguably the biggest white rap group of their time STILL didn't have the sales or clout that Em did.
He (Em) was just better than all of them. He elevated all of hip hop because he expanded the base of who was listening. He's not wrong in saying his sales may have well been different if he was black, but you know what else would be different? People wouldn't be saying "he's nice ... for a white guy", they'd be saying he was their #1, or at the very least in their top 3 or 5 rap artists if they truly love the genre.

As a white person from rural South…I agree. BUT 2 wrongs don’t make a right. I was raised to not see skin color, culture or religion…just how the person treated me & others around me. But I had black people…kids thru adults…instantly treat me negatively bc I’m white. I *do get* that they may have been used to receiving racism from most white people but alienating every white person the second they speak to you wont change things for the better.
I have several black, Hispanic & friends of other races who gave me the chance to show them who I am…beyond just the color of my skin. But if other races spew hatred towards *everyone* with pale skin…it ends up convincing many that the white racists have a point or are 100% correct. So rather than an ally in deconstructing racism…it just breeds more racists. And there are already FAR TOO MANY white people who are racist from the start! Typically due to much of their families being racist. 😕🤷🏻‍♀️
