  • Ginger needs 7-10 months of growth (in warm conditions) if you want a larger harvest. You can grow it indoors, in a Ziploc bag and gain 1-3 months of growth time during the cold periods of your Zone. This video explains why it is important and how to do it.

    If you throw a few pieces of onion into the bag, it'll activate the roots a lot faster...Also, don't store your Ginger near Onion because Onion will activate the nods and they will shoot....

    OMG. Where was this video last year? I have been growing ginger in Maryland zone seven for the last four years. But I never thought to start it early in the house! It is April 22, and I have not yet started my ginger! This is utterlybrilliant!

      Put your ginger in a draw with potatoes and onions and that will root the ginger, no moisture needed

    Nice one Gary. As an indoor grower I'm always looking for and trying new ways of growing that reduces the time required in the main grow rooms under lights.
    Methods like yours are awesome.
    Thanks for this information and today I'm going to get this started and going to try it with turmeric too 😎

    Thank you for this video. I live in zone 5b and have been trying to figure out how to grow Ginger and Tumeric. What would be the best way to store/save ginger during the winter and then plant for the following spring? I do not want to buy new ginger every year. The winters can be cold, and the basement or the garage is the only space we have to store any plants during the winter months. I am still learning on how to best grow ginger and tumeric in my area. Thank you for your videos. I appreicate any addtional information that you can share!

    Gary, I'm trying the sprout the ginger in the ziploc bag. Once I see the sprouts and some roots - do I plant them in the flats or leave them in the plastic bag till I can plant them in the garden? I tried it the other way last year & the harvest was meh. Thanks!

    Hi Gary, I love your videos. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.
    I have tried many other ways to grow ginger and yours is by far the best. Mine have started growing roots and they can't go in my garden until June. I was hoping to put them into my warm greenhouse or sunroom until June. If I can plant them now and of course keep them warm, how often should I water them? Can I grow Turmeric the same way? Love, Love, Love your videos!!

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry just saw this. But you can pot them up and grow them in soil indoor until they are ready. Turmeric is trickery but can be done this way. And watering is tricky. Let it dry between watering but you can really over do it with holes in bottom.

    How does the plastic bag method compare to starting in soil inside? I did the latter (Feb 20) and I now have 7 pots of tall ginger plants waiting to go outside. 5b.

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well this will just get its started and it would go into garden. The soil method lets you grow it longer. Depends on what you want to do.

    Can I grow the ginger in a bucket? If I start it indoors by May 1 to get it rooted, I could plant in a bucket to put outside by June 1. That gives it 4 months warm weather outside, then I can bring it back inside to my sunroom when it starts going back to cooler weather in the fall. Will that work?
