Ok my friends. Here is it.
I plant my ginger in potting mix in large pots and bring the pots in during the winter then back outside during the spring after 2 years I usually have very large ginger to harvest in zone 5 👍
do you keep them under lights in the winter and do you cut the stalks off?
@@gardenlikeaviking when it gets late Oct the stalks usually start dying back so I bring the pots inside and just set them in my back room by my slider door that faces south when the stalks turn yellow its very easy to pull them off then I cover the top of the potting mix with about a 1/4 inch of Playsand (silica sand ) to stop any fungas gnat infestation no lights needed because they seem to go dormant even when I put them under lights they still went dormant and the tops died back and I only lightly water them when the pots become light to pick up then in the spring around mothers day I take them back outside . Ginger needs at least two years to grow here in the states you will be impressed on your yield the second year I'm south of you in Greenwood IN , hope this helps friend 👍
tip...to remove the growth inhibetor (?) just place the vegie or fruit in water, cover with water for 24 hours, after that rinse well and place it again in water for another 24 hours, rise and it ready to sprout or put it in the garden...

@@houndjog Grate 50 grams of fresh ginger, add 10-15 ml of wetting agent and 3 liters of water. Leave to macerate for 2-5 hours. Filter the extract and use immediately. I am sorry for my english. Good luck

THANK YOU. Last year I took advice from somebody in California (I'm Zone 5b) and it didn't grow. Well no wonder. I have no heat mat, my house is barely 72F inside, and last year's summer was particularly cold (50s in August). I'm trying again!!!
it loves the heat so crank the heat mat up to 90f and set them outside in a black fabric grow bag or something similar to get really toasty

Just had my first sprout! I have a makeshift heat mat by putting my makeshift trays on top of jars of water in front of a heat vent in the house. Oh and the ginger was getting pretty shriveled when I bought and planted too! Organic from grocery store. Thanks brotha. Hoping to get a decent harvest. Zone 7 should be better 👍

neat i stay in indiana too, i had to build a two block high cinderblock bed with a plastic liner to retain water. Filled with co co coir and other good stuff. Got my barrels of swamp water ready for this snow to finally go away for good. Cant wait to get to gardening again.

I think where you are at you can grow ginger naturally year round... does it frost where you are?
Yes we do get frost. I grow the ginger in buckets. So I can move them if I need to.
They seem to thrive in shade.

welcome to the channel my friend!!... just remember ginger needs to be hardened off real slowly from inside because it will easily burn in direct sunlight for the first couple weeks of being outside!

I like to start my seeds in my propane oven ,,you see the bottom burner is always on making the oven a great dehydrator when the door is closed or I can moisten things inside a zip lock bag! I can get a whole tray into a large storage bag .....Got to be quick to get things into the light though. Is ginger like onion seeds ...who are light sensitive to when the sun is waning? I live in 7b ....hoping to plant a ginger crop after last frost. Now ...baby ginger??? Would a house plant produce large ginger? Many thanks!
interesting!... the baby ginger is not a problem because its so sweet and tender I actually prefer it to the large and tough stuff you can eat the whole baby ginger
i know exactly what you are talking about LOL. it took about 2 months for my avacodo to actually sprout from the ground. i planted the seed in early june of last year. so yeah; about august i saw it poke out of the ground. yeah; sometimes it takes a while for something to grow
i also add earthworms and roly polys that i find . and throw those into the pot with soil . plants seem to love it

I think you usually get frost in January right?... then start it 8 weeks before the last frost date to set out a few weeks after the last frost.... also you could just grow it in big containers and bring it inside for the couple months where its cold... ginger loves to just keep growing and growing

Apparently, the leaves taste like lemon grass and ginger. The leaves and stalks go well in soups, also i guess.

that could be beneficial yes if you have a space dedicated specifically to ginger but it will take time to decompose and become plant available
Your pretty much my "go to" need garden information Nate. Like to add this information for growing ginger. Take a quart zip lock bag place your ginger in it with a moist paper towel covering the ginger, on the other half of moist towel place sliced up parts of onions, reseal the bag about halfway so there's some air leave in a dark warm place and in about 4 to10 days (you monitor} the ginger root shoots come flying out the the sides of the ginger eye, that's when I would place them in the set up you have,
thats the first I've heard of that!!... what do you think the onion does for the process?

yes we are going to inoculate many wood chip beds this spring with wine cap mushrooms so I'll be doing a couple videos on that!!
Same. Doing a bed of wine caps and an Almond Agaricus Bed as far away as possible. I live in Zone 9b so humidity is not an issue. The heat is so I’m testing the waters to see what works.

Oh my goodness funny you are doing this. I bought ginger from the store whole and stuck then whole thing flat in along with my house plant and it is now 12” tall. It took a long while for it to start but when it starts to grow look out I swear I can see it growing! It is fast growing! I have not done a darn thing to it and it’s doing great. I even water from the top. I pretty much did all the wrong things and it worked. It was just an experiment. Mine was not organic. I’ll do better next time but so happy with my little experiment. How do you know when to pull it? Just after the stem dies like a garlic? Do you need to let it dry before storing or using?
I'll be interested to see the results of your harvest!... the ginger will just keep growing and growing so far I don't think it dies back on its own like garlic... you can prune off the leaves as needed for tea and ginger flavor the leaves and stems have a strong ginger flavor

Another fantastic instructional video Nate! I have to say I was hoping you would experiment w/a couple of pieces that were dipped in wood ash after cutting the pieces, then planting them immediately to see if they would flourish (from the ash dip like they do w/potatoes) or just rot from not being dried out first. That's OK. I will do that experiment myself and let you know although it might not be until next year. Cheers my friend! ThanQ for all you do for us!

you can place it inside compost. You put it in a cardboard box and place that box into post then turn the pile. You just pull that cardboard out. /grow bag in compost pile.
I grew ginger in a similar way a few years ago. It grew, but the yield was not astronomic. The bulb got just a few times bigger than originally.
At last, a realistic and clearly experienced way to grow ginger in a genuine cold climate! So many videos showing people with greenhouses full of enormous plants showing huge roots and you find at the end they are in a sub tropical climate. Thanks for your tips which cover all the main concerns like when to start it off, temperature and transplanting and feeding. I have only grown once successfully in my 77 years and I now know I have been starting it off far too late. Thanks for a great video. This year will definitely be the one in which we succeed here in northern France! :)

Hi. You are so RIGHT. I have done exactly what you say and started a whole tuber or corm off in a shallow dish covered in compost, and put into a heated propagator. I gave it a little moisture to keep it ok and it put up several healthy shoots several weeks ago. The largest are now growing out of the propagator so I have potted it into a large pot with some good compost and now have put it onto a heated mat in the polytunnel. I have never got one started this early before and I am looking forward to potting it on or even putting into the greenhouse bed once we are into hot weather. I've had it stay fresh for a couple months at most... I've heard of people being able to make it last all winter so I'm going to try a few different techniques this year to see... I ferment most of it for eating all winter long
@@gardenlikeaviking yeah I would definitely like to ferment ginger or make a ginger bug for ginger beer and homemade root beer with sassafras root. Those two beverages along with kombucha is the reason why I want to grow in the first place. Do you think this applies to black ginger and shampooed ginger?

some people bring them in over the winter but I don't have the room for all of that so I just plant fresh each spring and harvest completely in the fall

What size grow bag do you suggest? The one in the video looked like about a tall 10 gallon
the one in the video is a 70 gallon... but you could use a 10 gal if you only put a few pieces into it... ginger does well in most pots above 5 gal so long as you don't put too many pieces into it
What about storing baby ginger?
What would happen, If you take some ginger you have harvested and put it in small pots with some potting soil and let it hibernate indoor but no heat lamp. once they stay dormant in winter indoor you replant them to have bigger crop in subsequent spring season ?
Great! I am in Southern Indiana. But I started late this year. I started in March and put it in the raised bed in May with little sprouts, but I still haven't seen the leaves.
don't worry my friend you will still get a decent harvest come October... just keep it well hydrated

Hey, I put my downstairs it's about in the 60s or a lil higher like 65. An yes, I'm new to this, but this ginger is growing way too fast on me. Like 1inch to half a inch a day, it crazy.
I'm clearly late to plant ginger, but can I start it now to get the plant set up, overeinter it inside and start rhizome production next year from the spring?
yes you can start it now and if you use a heat mat you'll be able to germinate it fast enough to still get a decent harvest come sept and then you can also move it inside and overwinter for next year

Great, thanks so much, Nate - I've been looking forward to this one for ages! I've also read that soaking the ginger for a few hours prior to planting helps - have you tried that?
I would recommend against that because in my experience Ginger is sort of delicate and if things are too moist it just wants to rot... thats why we only bottom water once we see the soil physically a bit dry... you could try it though and see what works better and be sure to let me know if you do!

Quick question, you're growing your ginger in a sack, is it ok to put the JLF fish and other fertilisers in as it's not directly in the ground?
definitely you can use them so long as its outside... I use them in mine!

unfortunately no this ginger keeps about two months in the fridge or root cellar... I use it to make all sorts of fermented stuff so I can eat it all winter long... I buy fresh from the store each year
