    with the pippin hardware, apple bet on the powerPC cpu and failed to include a beefy video chip with 3D acceleration. this would ensure the doom of the format, among other factors.

    Apple between 1987 and the return of Jobs was a very “let’s throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks”.
    This, an early “smart TV”-esque terminal system, Newton, and half a billion Mac lines that were all literally the same hardware - and the clone thing, too - caused them too many problems as a company.

    • @EweToobUsername
      @EweToobUsername 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and many of the games could run on a real Mac with similar hardware.

    Some of the coolest mods you can do to an Apple Bandai Pippin are simple you can install a scuzzy port on the back of the machine and replace the internal drive cable that goes to the CD drive and add a external hard drive similar to the developer models that had a scuzzy port out the back the system does not stop you from adding a hard drive which is very very odd basically if you took the ram bios module that you see on the board and remove it and plug a apple bios chip into it it would basically become a Macintosh 100% at nearly a quarter of the price the Apple Bandai Pippin sold for $700 in some regions which was not a bad price considering a Apple Macintosh was nearly $12,000

    That's not really why Apple bought NeXT. Apple were in a position where their efforts to replace MacOS Classic were going horribly wrong (Copland, Pink, &c.), and they needed a new starting point. It pretty much a choice between NeXT and BeOS, but Be's CEO Jean-Louis Gassée overplayed his hand, so the second choice of NeXT was the only option.

    • @Choralone422
      @Choralone422 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly! Apple absolutely needed NeXT for their OS as Apple's own OS efforts were falling completely flat.
      Also LD, while Apple was having a somewhat rough time throughout much of the 90's they were nowhere near bankruptcy. In 1997 Apple still had at least 1 billion dollars in reserve cash and Microsoft also pumped in an additional 150 million dollars via an investment which benefitted both companies.

    • @RetroBytesUK
      @RetroBytesUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really enjoyed the video, but I think for Apple bringing Steve back in the fold was a good bonus but not the prime motivation. Apple needed a new OS, as thier own plans to replace MacOS with copland had really not gone well and after years of delay they had thrown in the towel. Everyone assume BeOS would be the replacment, but after Apple could not come to terms with BeOS (as BeOS wanted way too much money) Apple bought NeXT so they could take its OS OpenStep and produce their own OS based on it (OS X). NeXT also really needed Apple to buy them as NeXT where a few months off declaring bankruptcy.

    • @JustinC721
      @JustinC721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, but I think the long term plan was also to bring Steve Jobs back. Apple was in big trouble in the 90s and I think they knew he was the guy who could turn it around. NeXT also made headway into the education sector which made it a lucrative investment despite having zero marketshare in the consumer space. That said, I'm not sure how much of a role NeXTSTEP played into the decision. But it is worth noting that it is the direct predecessor for MacOS (and subsequently iOS) starting with OSX. Thus, it's legacy exists to this day.

    • @JustinEdwords
      @JustinEdwords 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Choralone422 i think it was 1996 that apple was close to bankruptcy. The clones were doing way better than their own computers. The microsoft deal didnt happen until 1997.

  • @Thekinggamelon
    @Thekinggamelon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    In an alternate universe, the Pippin was a big seller Worlwide, Apple never bothered to buy NeXT and Jobs never came back to the company he left. And when Microsoft released the X-BOX, Apple answer them by making the Pippin XP, making Apple being more involved in video game business, unlike what's happening recently.

    • @roerd
      @roerd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Pippin alone wouldn't have saved Apple. One of the biggest problems of Apple in the nineties were their multiple failed attempts at developing a more modern version of the Mac OS, and so the official main reason for buying NeXT was actually their operating system NeXTSTEP which would become the basis of Mac OS X.

    Okay I own an apple Bandai Pippin I bought one because I was curious about the hardware and how much hacking you could actually do on the hardware and what's funny is almost the entire library of the Apple Bandai Pippin can run on a Macintosh Not only was there no copy protection they basically took a strip down version of Mac OS 8.5 and put it on the CD so essentially the CD would boot any Macintosh that was compatible with Mac OS 8.5 you didn't need to buy a Pippin you could actually just boot it on your home Macintosh some of the wild things you see with the Pippin is the ram slot on the bottom of the Pippin is the same Ram module as a power book so Apple borrowed from a lot of different things what is the most screwed up thing about this console is when it failed if you're wondering why you can find consoles everywhere in Japan new in box sealed it's because no one has the software to run on it and it's not their fault it's actually on purpose when the Apple Bandai Pippin failed Apple bought back the stock of the Apple Bandai Pippins that didn't sell and had them destroyed along with the software this is why CDs for the Apple Bandai Pippin fetch a hefty sum of $500 a CD on up

    Heh. The corporate culture at Apple around that time was really wild. Multiple competing projects within the company, each sabotaging each other and trying to be the 'next thing that matters'. If Apple had learned how to work with, well, itself, it really could have been something at the time.
    Though it should be noted, NeXT was also doing very poorly, Apple was not really threatened by them. The problem Apple did have was that their next OS project was doing SO badly that it was cheaper to buy NeXT and use its OS than it was to scrap their own and restart. Jobs coming back was more of a 'if you want my OS, you have to put me back in charge' move, and he nearly killed the company again...

If Steve Jobs hadn't came back to Apple then they would have to file for bankruptcy and closed their doors for good. In the words of a certain TH-camr "What were they thinking "

    Apple pippin hardware is outdated to compete in the 5th gen and pc gaming era. It needed a svga or sxga video output. Marketed as a MAC OS 7 and later 8 (KMP 2000 model) living room pc.

    Consoles back then. Custom hardware sometimes computers, needing marketing to help it. These days all wanting to be like computers with hardware so easier to develop for and to allow for people getting used to them with expandable storage, still console/streaming service like boring menus and internet among media expected even if gamers may not care but people do use them for many features to keep up with phones and computers.
    Consolided hardware made sense but yeah I think too much for some people to care back then even if beneficial for companies but in some cases like Atari pushing their computers to much on consoles wasn't the best idea when many Devs wanted more power or customers grew to expect more once upgrading was expected compared to questioning why you would need to upgrade.
    Never been into Apple products than a Shuffle and Apple TVs but always cool to research what they did attempt.
    Besides being a bad time for the company. That and Jobs had the marketing angle back then.
    Clearly it shows a company focused on its own products was better offer depending on the deals they made of course then. Or that in the games industry people don't care (3DO having other issues or it being confusing) then the computer industry with Windows being a license for OEMs to out on many computers, Google making it an open platform for Android as examples.
    They have the App Store/Apple Arcade so no need for one now but still.
    That's surprising (besides hardware as don't know enough about Power PC as much hardware from that era as much. But it is hard to make hardware powerful enough for developers to make/port games over or other software but suitable enough for customers to buy and if manufacturers take the hit for loss or not that (and I'd they commit to multiple consoles after that to keep having an install base) and also I guess the price is as fine/a bit high for a games console as far as I get of Yen to USD) as it was an option but clearly users weren't interested or it wasn't as big of a deal to customers than what was already offered in gaming I guess even with big IPs on it I assume the marketing or other types of games weren't there besides the quality of being I assume not appealing or great I don't know much about it's library.
    But it does say a lot where the Xbox follows Windows a bit too much at times besides being distinct in others even if both Windows and Xbox teams don't see eye to eye but still keeps going or the Windows CE benefitted the Dreamcast or Gizmondo and I think the OG Xbox besides their focus on developers.
    Maybe the deals for companies just wasn't worth it compared to others for make games on the platform outside of Mac games.
    While Apple users were content with their Mac's already doesn't surprise me they have the option they need and those outside the ecosystem probably did or didn't care.
    Then again how many people remember the Newton their device before the iPhone as a I think PDA/general purpose device. I forget if it was around the same time as the Atari like Pocket PC/PDA the Profile/Portfolio forget the name but something like that. Still had a monochrome screen and a compact computer device capable of so much on the go.

    I knew of the system, but not that it was part of a larger project. Can you imagine if this clone thing had worked out? The history of Apple and electronics in general would’ve played out quite differently. It’s probably not a stretch to say that Pippin needed to die to get to where we are now. If Apple had turned their fortunes around with the format, then there probably would’ve been no need to bring Steve Jobs back in the late ‘90s. He wasn’t an engineer or a programmer, but he had an eye for the next big thing. No Jobs means no iMac, which was a project he personally spearheaded. More importantly, there’d be no iPod or iPhone. They may not have been the first MP3 player or smart phone, but they definitely popularized them. Maybe these devices never would’ve caught on, or maybe they would’ve been popularized by NeXT (the company Jobs started during his absence, which Apple purchased in 1996). I don’t have quite the imagination to see a world where NeXT bumped Apple off like Microsoft did with Sega and everything associated with post-1996 Apple was released by NeXT instead (mostly because I don’t think NeXT had the resources to build that stuff on their own), but Apple might have lost a significant share in the personal computer market. It could’ve been a fairly close race between Microsoft, Apple, and NeXT, or perhaps Apple and NeXT would have both collapsed, leaving Microsoft with a virtual monopoly.

    • @jhoughjr1
      @jhoughjr1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were a few Mac clones released in the 90s under it but I don't think they went far because they weren't near the build quality and a soon as Jobs came back he killed the clone program.

    • @johntheblindman
      @johntheblindman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The $150 million investment from MS didn't saved anything. Apple's Quicktime lawsuit against MS AVI was settled and that is why MS suddenly "invested". They found code in AVI that still had the exact comments from Quicktime. Literal Copy/Paste. They settled out of court and agreed to share tech, multiple undisclosed payments which totals vary depending on which insider is telling the story but it's around billions. Also an agreement that MS Office and IE will continue on MacOS until 2012. Since then MS continued with Office cause it makes them money, dropped IE because Safari and MS Web Fonts is still available.
