      People have been mocking me for years I have a wood stove and a ten kw generator. Along with lots of beer and food. When Texas lost power in the little cold snap in February 2021 you'd think that it was the end of the world. I was in a warm building eating hot food and drinking cold beer lmmfao and posting it on Facebook when I found fake news articles blaming abbot. FJB 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

    Thank you, this is a clear no-nonsense video. I have seen so much conflicting information on whether to remove (suck out) the excess oxygen before sealing. I have always kept a "back stock" or what some call a second tier (6-9 mos of food) as long as I can remember. We are new to long-term storage. I have been working on storing for long term for about 1 year now realizing 6-9 mos will not be enough with the way our country is going now. I bake with ancient grains and have been storing the berries in mylar and buckets.
    Do you freeze your grain prior to sealing to kill weevil eggs & larva?
    Also, do I need to put pasta in mylar as well? I have long spaghetti and linguine noodles in their boxes in a large rubber seal, snap lock black bin.

    • @Shadowcat1954
      @Shadowcat1954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am just like you. His presentation was so clear and included little details. I've seen conflicting opinions on how to store grains, but decided to freeze. Then let come to room temp and then refreeze. I always wondered why let come to room temperature, and just learned earlier today, because, the larvae that don't die at first freeze, will "think it's spring," and hatch. Then you refreeze to kill those. Then put in your Mylar bags. I'm still learning. Good luck!

      Either purchase smaller bags to seal or if you have time on your hands and a lot of patience, you could possibly make one larger bag into two smaller ones by cutting it in half and sealing the newly cut end with the iron making sure to leave one end open to put your food in.

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Felicia, irons are not always consistent in their settings, but I used the "wool" or hottest setting. The key is not necessarily the exact setting, but the time you keep the iron in place. Different thicknesses of mylar bags may react differently. Keep it simple and do just like in the video. If you have a quality bag with the metal film inside, you will be fine; all you're doing is lightly melting the plastic together. When you finish, look at the seal and be sure you don't have any wrinkles that might allow for the enclosed vacuum to draw air into the bag. I promise this is a very simple and quick process. If you can peel the bag open, it wasn't heated long enough. If you use cheap silver plastic bags, they will melt easily and tear. Never, ever use the cheap shiny 3.5 mil style bags you find online like Amazon or discount websites. Those bags will also contaminate your food when the silver coating decays into your food, and you will be able to see through the bag.

    And what happens to the other 9 oxy absorbers (if not individually sealed) while doing one bag which takes almost 2 minutes? I figure prep 10 bags first but still going to take way beyond 2 minutes.

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, but you almost answered it yourself. If you're only packaging one mylar bag, you can have a friend fold over the flap on the rest of the absorbers while you work. When you're done with the food sealing, reseal the absorber pouch, and they'll be fine if you squeeze out the excess air before you seal. If the absorber bag doesn't want to seal, or it'll be some time before you're ready to use the balance of the absorbers, you can use or make a small mylar bag to keep them in. You can make a small bag by cutting up a larger bag to the size you like.
      The other method is to prepare ten food bags and when you're ready, drop one in and seal, move to the next one and drop one in and seal. With just a little practice, you can seal ten food bags in just a couple minutes. The trick is to seal one bag at a time while keeping the balance of the absorbers deprived of air as much as possible. Yes, it's about a two-minute activation time, but that's plenty, so just work smoothly and efficiently. Don't rush, or you'll make a mistake or spill food everywhere. It's very helpful to have an extra pair of hands to help.

    After you fill, seal and let the bags sit, should you then store them in a food grade bucket or can you store in a cabinet?

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Gina, Once the Mylar bags are filled and have set a day or so to do their own vacuum drawdown, you can store them in any manner you wish that will protect the integrity of the bag. Keep in mind the 5 enemies of food storage: Light, Heat, Moisture, Contamination and Infestation. Since the bag is in contact with the food you don't need a food-grade bucket. We put a lot of bags in regular 5-gallon buckets and we also just stack the flat bags on storage shelves out in the open. The most important part is to get high-quality bags. Avoid those 3.5 mil shiny plastic bags you see online. Try to stick with 5 or 7 mil bags that have the foil core. Food companies are using these all the time now, you might even have some in your pantry. Bonus tip: if you have used mylar coffee bags or others, you may be able to reuse them with your iron. Just add in an o2 absorber as we discuss in the video. Thanks for the question!

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bags I use are typically limited to the 1-gallon and 5-gallon sizes for uniformity. The absorbers I use are also limited to 300cc and 2,000cc relatively. If you run out of absorbers in a particular size it's ok to use whichever size you have on hand as long as it matches the cc volume of the bag you're using. For example, you run out of 2,000cc absorbers you can add up the 300s until you reach the required volume. It's ok to go over just try to not go under the volume needs of the container. 7-300cc packs =2100cc so you can substitute 7-300cc packs for 1-2,000cc pack if you need to seal a 5-gallon bucket bag.

    Explain to me the "2 minute activation time" on the oxy absorbers. Is it something you bend and break inside the absorber to activate it? I have a package of like 20 absorbers but don't have 20 items to do all at once. Can I seal the unused ones in a vacuum sealer or will they be o.k?

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris,
      O2 absorbers are just little hand warmers. Once you open their packaging, oxygen from the room air penetrates the packet causing a chemical reaction that produces warmth.
      In the case of food storage we don’t care about the warmth but the digestion of the small amount of oxygen within the Mylar bag that fuels the warmth. The small packets can only absorb a small amount of oxygen, therefore we need to limit the packet’s exposure to room air or they will go the way of the hand warmer and deplete their ability to digest the oxygen when you place them in a sealed Mylar bag later on. They are a one-time use product.
      The pouches take only a minute or two to begin the chemical reaction so don’t dilly nor dally in the sealing process. If you don’t plan to use them all at once squeeze out the air and reseal them within a couple of minutes to save them for later.
      Vacuum sealer bags are not good for absorbers because the plastic is not a strong enough barrier material against oxygen penetration into the vacuumed bag. I recommend small Mylar pouches and heat seal them or use the original bag they arrived in. I don’t recommend Mason jars either because they allow too much room air in the jar and the absorbers will keep trying to react until all the air is digested. They will be depleted or weak when you need them later.
      Thanks for the question,
      Charley

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible to use a flat iron if it gets hot enough. I recommend try it out. You might have to hold it a few extra seconds due to the variety of temperature ranges and the thickness of various bag brands. The key is to avoid any wrinkles in the Mylar bag that would allow air to enter under the vacuum that will happen as the O2 absorber starts to work.
      Many people have great success with flat irons and even clothing irons. Have some fun with trying both.

    do you feel its bad to use a vacuum sealer?

    • @ReadyGoPrep
      @ReadyGoPrep  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can AirsoftRegiment Yes, it's bad to use a vacuum sealer when using a mylar bag. A vacuum sealer draws the bag down so tight that when you put an o2 absorber in, you risk rupturing the bag. Also, if you're not using an o2 absorber, you're only removing part of the atmosphere but there's still oxygen on your food. Plus, if you're buying cheap mylar off the internet, you might be able to use your foodsaver to seal the bag, but real mylar would be too thick to seal with that machine.

    I'm trying to do this with Mylar emergency blankets and it doesn't work. Help!

    • @discipleofchrist5217
      @discipleofchrist5217 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats because the mylar emergency blankets for 1 are very very thin & not made to be turned into a bag. Actual mylar bags are very thick compared to a survival blanket. The bags are anywhere from 5-7 mil thick in most casses & that blanket is probably at the most 1.5-2 mil thick & probably a different type of mylar

      For a bag roughly called a 1-gallon size we use a 300cc absorber. For a bag that fits in a 5-gallon bucket, we use a 2,000cc absorber. Keep things simple and prepping will be easy to do.

      Science Alert! Long answer to explain the difference between mylar type bags and vacuum sealer bags and why you should use an iron to seal Mylar.
      Vacuum sealers use specialized plastic bags that are textured with vacuum channels so the sealer can pull air from all areas of the bag. Mylar bags do not have textured insides thus the vacuum will not pull the air through the clamped seal where the iron will heat seal the bag. Additionally, vacuum sealers are not usually tuned for the temperatures required to thermal seal heavy bags or the usually larger-size bags. There are silly people who try all kinds of ways to use vacuum sealers for mylar bags on youtube just to get attention but none of that is necessary nor do those methods avoid the use of oxygen sealers. They make a simple process complicated and ineffectual.
      The reason is that vacuuming only compresses the bag tight but the atmosphere inside with the food still contains the ambient amount of oxygen thus not protecting the food completely. Oxygen absorbers digest the o2 portion of the bagged atmosphere to preserve the food and in the process draws the bag down as if it were vacuumed. In the end, vacuuming doesn't protect the food it's just a convenient byproduct of the process. Removing oxygen is what allows the food to be stored for long periods.
      Additional note for vacuum sealer bags: they are not true oxygen barriers and will not prevent o2 from reentering the bag over time thus attacking your food. Quality Mylar is a true barrier material. Nor do vacuum bags prevent light from depleting the nutrients in the food as mylar does.
      As of today (April 28, 2022), Mylar bags from quality suppliers are a challenge to find. There will be all kinds of imitation shiny plastic bags on Amazon, avoid the temptation to purchase these, the silver coating will wear off and contaminate your food. The general rule is that if you can shine a flashlight through the bag it is a garbage knock-off. That's why they are so cheap.
      Thanks for the great quest Leo!

    What about the weight of the bag...

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bag itself (the tare weight) weighs almost nothing. Another reason Mylar is a great product for food storage. A further benefit is that there is no unnecessary bulk to the packaging like you would find with boxes and air-filled bags. This allows much more effective use of storage space. When food is packed tighter and is stored in a more dense environment such as on shelves, the temperature fluctuations are greatly reduced and heat is repelled more efficiently. Especially when stored in cooler temps such as a basement or near a floor in a closet.

    • @MCALLAN1998
      @MCALLAN1998 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charleyhogwood1036 It most certainly does not weigh almost nothing. A small 3x2cm one can weigh almost half a gram. If youre weighing up a 3.5g of product to go in there, that's nearly 15% of the full weight.. Always weigh the product separately from its container.

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MCALLAN1998 In food storage, we are generally packing bags with anywhere from one-gallon bags (full weight approx. = 5-8 pounds of dry goods) to five-gallon bags in buckets that weigh in at 35-38 pounds. A few grams of tare weight should be ok unless we are loading spacecraft.

    how thick is your mylar? .5mil?

  • @techtrektrick3509
    @techtrektrick3509 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    2 questions: are those 5 millimeter mylar bags and how many cc's of oxygen absorbers total?
    is 300 cc adequate?

    • @charleyhogwood1036
      @charleyhogwood1036 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The bags we use are 5 or 7 mil thickness. Our rule of thumb to keep things easy and uniform for absorber sizes is; 5-gallon bucket size bags get one 2,000cc o2 absorber each. That's plenty. A 1-gallon bag or smaller gets one 300cc o2 absorber. The "cc" is the volume of a bag or container that the absorber can service by digesting the oxygen in that container. It's ok to use a larger absorber because it will just work until it has used up all the oxygen in the contained atmosphere. You can figure out the cc volume of any container size by using an online conversion chart.
      You can also mix and match absorbers if you need to. Let's say you need a 2,000cc absorber but only have 7-300cc absorbers. No problem, 7 x 300cc = 2,100cc. Toss them in and you're all set.
      If you are using Mason jars it's ok to use some smaller 100cc absorbers, it's just another thing to keep around. You'll save a little by buying the smaller ones if you use them a lot. I recommend keeping the unused absorbers in a sealed Mylar bag and not a small mason jar for storage just because of the reduced airspace in a bag vs a jar. They'll last much longer sealed in a small tight Mylar bag.
      Pro tip:
      If you aren't sure if your absorbers are still good, just feel them. If they are soft and powdery they are usually good. If they feel crusty inside they are used up.
