If you mean that it has a ziploc type of seal then yes you can as long as there is enough available Mylar material above the zipper to work with. If there is no extra material you can cut the zipper off and seal the bag without it. High quality Mylar bags can be cut to various sizes and shapes and sealed as you like. The key is to use good bags. If you can shine a flashlight through the material it is a cheap knock off material that will contaminate your food as the silver coating wears off inside the bag.
I have several questions if you please. Can y'put various foods (all in their own mylar bags) inside of the big 5 gallon bag, OR is it better to stick w/ putting one particular food in like you've done, rice or flour for example? Bucket have to be sterilized if those bags were Not put in a 5 gallon mylar? If a person put those all straight in the bucket w/ no large mylar, you'd then have to put 2000cc oxygen absorber directly in the bucket!! I have all this food I need to get to putting in my buckets but am worried about how to sterilize stuff the right way. Do ya reapply oxygen absorbers after opening to get food out each time!!? Also, on the gamma lids, there are two rubber gasket rings on them. If I bleach or vinegar those, it'd destroy the rubber, but if I didn't sterilize them along w/ the lids and stuff, will germs get in there? Guess I'm over thinking but never done anything like this & can't get any answers on it. I pray you are able to see this & help this ol lady. Thanks for the demo of ironing. That part I am confident with now, ha!!
Hi Donna, there is a lot to unpack here but it’s actually very simple. If food is purchased in good quality Mylar bags you do not need to repack anything just toss it into a bucket. The way to determine if the Mylar bag is quality is to shine a flashlight through it. If you see any light penetrating then it’s just cheap silver plastic. Go ahead and toss the cheap bag and repack in a good bag with an oxygen absorber. Keep like foods together in each bag. As far as buckets go, you do not need to sterilize any buckets, just rinse any dirt or paint out, make sure it’s dry and you’re done. This includes the lids. Food in Mylar is protected by the Mylar bag, the bucket only protects the bags and makes for easier moving and storage. If you open a bag with an absorber for inspection, use a new absorber when you repack. Never put food directly in a bucket with an absorber for storage, the absorber will create a vacuum and either draw air through the plastic bucket thus defeating the purpose pf the absorber and ruining your food, or the vacuum might crack the bucket. Here are the steps to Mylar: 1. Quality bags 2. Label bag 3. Insert food into bags 4. Insert proper absorber 5. Squeeze out excess air 6. Seal bag 7. Toss bags on shelf or in bucket 8. Enjoy your peace of mind Charley
Well, I trust the bags can be resealed easily enough after opening each time. I'll do the flashlight, but think they'll be alright. Not sure about the oxygen absorbers tho. Seemed half firm-ish when I got em. Dang I hate to have to order more bc I just want to be done w/ the prep of all this. Many thx for the info, y'have no idea how grateful I am! Been needing answers forever & y'were the only one to take time to really reply w/ actual answers. In all fairness Mary's Nest helped me some too a bit. God bless & cheers!! I hope & pray we all fare thru this horror show coming.
I sealed a mylar bag with rice about 5 years ago, and I want to open the bag so I can check the quality of the rice. Any suggestions how to re seal? Add new OA? Or keep the old ones? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated before I proceed?
use a new OA for sure. Reseal the same way you first sealed - assuming you left enough slack on the top portion of the bag. Which brings another key point: he wastes alot of the extra bag in this video by making the seal several inches below the top of the bag. This is disadvantageous for future resealing operations.
+lynn4flowers Yes, you can use one absorber as long as it is sized properly. For a 5 or 6-gallon bucket/bag you will need a 2000cc absorber. For a 1 gallon bag, you can use a 300cc absorber. You won't hurt anything by using a larger absorber if that is all you have available. If you only have smaller absorbers, add them up and use as many as you need to achieve the required cc number for that size bag. For example, if you are using a 5-gallon bucket but only have 3oo cc absorbers you can use 7 of those to equal 2100 cc. Mylar is super easy and extremely effective for food storage just don't overthink it or watch too many videos or you'll begin to question yourself. And never use a vacuum sealer if you are using oxygen absorbers. Happy bagging, Charley Hogwood www.readygoprep.com
Thank you! Saved me buying some elaborate "sealer". Cheers
Good tutorial. Thanks Charlie : )
I never had my buckets cracked...Good tips though! THANKS!
so helpful! Do you still have these buckets of food?
Yes we do, and they are still holding up great after almost 10 years.
When I open the 5 gal. Bag in the future. Can I reseal everything I open or do I have to use all the product in a reasonable time frame ?
Mylar bags are available with a ziplock top. You still have to heat seal them but after you open it you can ziplock it while you're going through it.
Can you also heat seal a mylar bag with a resealable top?

How many times can you reseal a mylar bag of 35 lbs of rice?
Do you still only use 1 oxygen absorber for a 5-gallon bag?
Great videos! Informative, short, and to the point.

Can you recommend a specific Mylar bag brand?
