Happy Saturday Guys, hope your all having a good start to your weekend and getting ready for the Super Bowl!
Here is Part 1 to my Basic BMX Skills. Basically this is a few different Drills Dylan and I put together for helping with improving your Flatland Freestyle abilities. These exercises are easy to learn and once you have them down you an increase their difficulty to keep it interesting.
While these different drills aren't teaching you a specific trick, they are going to give you the fundamental skills needed to build upon for those more advanced tricks. As you will see, practicing these drills will help give you more control over the bike and will teach you have to maneuver around and get the bike to do what you want.
We are going to have a Part 2 to these Basic BMX Skills which will show you how to translate these fundamental skills into actual freestyle tricks! Be sure to get these down solid before moving on to part 2.
    (CAPTIONS)
I think I need some McDonald's and some donuts. Well when was the last time you had McDonald's? It's been at least two weeks. That might be your problem. I think I'm going through McDonald withdraws. After this video we might have to make it stop. Yeah I was going to throw some donuts in there too but man now if I eat like if I have anything with sugar I've got a headache like two minutes later.
This is RL behind the mask, the curtain is pulled back. This is what a bad day looks like for me... So what you just have no energy today is what the deal is? Yeah. That's exactly what it feels like. It feels like the first time I've been on a bike. No motivation. No will to ride. Well that freaking Haro DMC man is sucking the life out of me man. All I have to do is think about what would be the best brakes to put on that, what size wheels, and I got to get a freecoaster that fits. And it's got to be this.
Well it is coming together. It's coming together nice but man and then you second-guess, you get it right and you're like yeah that looks good and then the next day you're like are you sure that looks good? Maybe you could make it look better. Maybe you should just reinvent the wheel all over again.
So I was talking to John Buultjens last night yesterday morning, and we were talking about you know building just what you go through to build a quality bike you know. And he said man when that bike gets here if it isn't exactly how I designed it, it hurts. It's like it breaks my heart. I can feel the pain and I'm like I remember that feeling. And then I was like man how could I push this onto John so I don't have to be so connected but it's the bike I want to ride but.
Here's what I'm thinking I'm hoping that if something happens with Haro and me, that Joe and John and I can spread some of the stress out a little bit between making. You know they already make good bikes but I mean it's you guys wanted to know what's inside of my head this is what is inside of my head. There's not too much going on in there. There's not too much right now it's a black hole.
All right well today we are out here because we wanted to film a writing video for you guys. But this one is going to be a little different, we were thinking of just doing well what we are kind of calling our fundamental skills. Just show you guys some exercises, it's not really a freestyle trick or anything but it is little training exercises I guess that you could work on to help with other things for riding. So foundational skills. Yeah Foundational skills.
I have done a lot of these exercises or I start my rides with some of these and I've noticed that it translates pretty quickly into helping with the specific tricks that I am working on so that was pretty cool. And they are just all so fun to do, it's a good workout and it's cool it is challenging. And it is something to that you can improve on or see Improvement on kind of on a daily basis so you can kind of set goals with it. And it gives you a motivation or something to kind of work towards. So that's what I like about it.
Yeah you know and it's funny because whenever I'm learning a new trick I go through it's like I am trying to break down this happy mask which I'm not good at math but you know it's just the way you do it you break it down. What's the balance point how far can you make it you know. And here's the deal you just do it over and over and over again. And by accident you will learn the correct way to do it that works for you. Which may be different for everybody else.
But that is why that repetition is so important. And I was doing, I'm in learning to do Peg wheelies. It sounds so simple right? Peg wheelies without a platform as a whole different game.

    • @Younghead

Riding and taking corners with no hands, a simple thing like that, I had to learn how to stay loose and find my saddle height all over again after not being on a B.M.X. since the 80’s and the steering angle is so steep on a DMC Haro.
That was week one time for something else.

Just riding around everywhere no handed, especially learning to turn doing it.

I bunny hop the side walk just try and get completely over it. I do cross ups and then bunny hop straight over. Track stands just balance in one place. Using curbs to catch air over the curb. Riding and balancing on curbs. lots curbs in my area..lol. Manuals are difficult, but I'm slowly getting it. Jumping the flight of stairs or just riding up and down the stairs is good balance practice.

Man I started riding again about a year ago at age 46 and I'm doing all of these things because its all I can do anymore, man it sure is different. I feel like I'm learning to walk again. Bunny hopping curbs and doing stalls and jumping down stairs and carving through downtown. Its great makes me feel like I'm a teenager again until I fall and it takes so long to heal. I did the road bike thing for a few years and you fall and get hurt without even doing a trick..lol.

It's good to see the basics simplified and explained. I can't tell you how many years I wasted as a kid trying a trick and assuming that either I'm faulty or my bike is a P.O.S. Tank until I saw and read the tutorials in BMXA. I'm 58 and was forced into retirement due to an accident 8 years ago. Finding out about the Big Bike BMX craze and the resurgence of BMX in older guys has inspired me back into the fold. Bah Bah Bah Bah Bah, I'm lovin' it! All this time I thought I was having a midlife crisis for wanting to relive my youthful, freestyle days. Either I fit in or we're all loosin' it. Screw em', I'm gonna have fun weather anyone likes it or not. Now get the hell off my lawn!🏴‍☠🚴‍♂

I love how you mentioned that in order to learn something new, you have to do it over and over and over until you get it right, in a way that works for you. 100% We all can learn from each other but it’s us that puts in the work and figures out the way we to do a trick or a line that just works for us.

Funny about McDonalds, I recall Buff was a Taco Bell fiend in the 80’s. A delight you are doing this with your son. Wasn’t your dad the editor of the magazine back in the day... Bob Oz? Or am I dreaming this? So cool you are riding again and several of us are! Q: what are the shoes you’re wearing that help your riding? Stay rad, bruddah.

I noticed your first exercise is also a game called, “Foot Down”. I saw it in a Bsd video where riders compete in a little game of balance where they see who can go the longest balancing without putting their foot down. You can move around but you cant pedal. Cool!

Curious what kind of frame you’re riding, Doesn’t look flat land specific is it just the street frame? I just got into the sport after over 20 years gone and it looks like flatland is becoming popular again, I have a Kachinsky team signature, 20.75 top tube, steep head tube angle, full chromoly… I haven’t had a brand new BMX for at least 25 years, I’ve noticed all the new stuff is so much easier to ride.

I always ride worse when surrounded by friends . In reality I ride the same it's that my friends ride better than me .
Being the worst in a group that's the best is to experience heaven on earth .
I'm 56 and over the years I noticed something common about the average spectator who believe I am wasting my time , they're all spectating , I'm actually participating .
We tend to condemn what we don't understand.
Always remember how to play and you will never forget how to play fair .
