My old mentor used to say, " Once you achieve greatness, all that's left is silly mistakes" So there ya are... :) At my age I'm so great I can hardly stand it some days !!!
Around my neck of the woods I have all the auto parts stores within walking distance. I'm a Die Hard Rock Auto guy now but I used to go to these guys and just prayed I got someone with a brain. It was 50/50 every time. Always take all the info and the old part or you'll be back lol. Great video as always!
I just wasted a whole day at work.. tried three different puller kits just for you to show me the rod and the small hole to push against the crank.. thanks bro now I’m gonna get it done in the morning
Eric re:worry about the radiator. 65 years ago, I hated busting my knuckles on the steel fins. So I just use a 6mm or 1/4" peice of plexiglass or 1/4" plywood and put in between the radiator and my work area. Helped preventing tools puncturing the radiator too.
This is why I try to not go to Autozone. It normally takes 3 round trips for me to get the correct part. This is also why I try to bring in the old part with me .
Autozone’s strategy was engineered by the same guy who sunk Sears and KMart, Eddie Lambert, vulture capitalist. Quality and good employees take the rear seat to corporate profits.
You forgot to do your daily affirmations in front of the mirror today Eric... I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doggone It, 115 K People Like Me! Don't be so down on yourself. Excellent job!
Tried getting a job at Autozone once. I interviewed with the assistant manager and he seemed visibly threatened by my experience working in an actual shop, since he told me he never so much worked at a quick oil change joint. So, I didn't get hired. No biggie. A few weeks later I went in to pick up some sway bar links that I had set aside and I found that the kid that they hired instead of me was the one "helping me". He didn't even know what sway bar links were and insisted that no such thing exists and it turned into a 15 minute fiasco with the assistant manager that hired this idiot over me just to get some damn bushings that were literally sitting in a box on the back counter. What a joke. A few years late commenting on this vid but hey I hope you get a good laugh out of my struggles 😂
The guy was afraid you would have his job, so, for job security's sake he didn't hire you. Always hire someone dummer than yourself if you work for a company.

You have no idea how great a service that you provide to us in the TH-cam community. I have a Ranger that quit while I was driving. I was thoroughly confused as I saw my coolant temperature climbing so high I was going to pull over. Before I did I saw the temperature fall back to normal. Continued driving and later the temperature shot up again. The engine shuddered slightly with spark knock (?) then quit. Internet searches resulted in my believing that it was a cracked head. After viewing this video I looked at the balancer and found chunks of rubber broken around the balancer. Just ordered the balancer and seal. You are a life saver.
After watching dozens of your informative and entertaining videos, with only a small percentage involving Toyota repairs, it looks like they must be much more reliable than most other brands.
Good video! In 40 yrs of wrenchin' I've never seen a belt make such deep grooves on its own, the damper must be Chineseium metal. Don't worry about small mistakes, you married Mrs O! You did good!
Nice job. You did spot the issue, just took a few seconds. Many would not see it at all. Going in on a Saturday evening, remember that when looking back in your life, no one ever said " I wish I worked more".
Quit beating yourself up Eric ! You are an EXCELLENT mechanic / technician . I've been in the game for 40 years and have made umpteen mistakes , misdiagnosed , created mountains from molehills … Even breaking a bolt off on a so called " simple " repair can lead to disaster . As for as the " Twilight Zone " , God help one dealing with them . I enjoy your videos and have learned so much . Wrench on Brother !
Dorman crank pulley: " See you next week Ford !!!" LOL. GREAT VID. Love the rant about the application process at autozone .... the times you get SALTY ... YEAHHHH.
Are you kidding me, that’s what I love about your channel, you keep it real! I don’t think there is a person out there that couldn’t have easily made the same little oops, no big deal. Eric you have taught me a lot and it’s appreciated! Back in the day I did all of my own auto repairs because I couldn’t afford not to but cars were a lot simpler back when. No internet then so the library was my source for info. Now I do some but not all of my own repairs. Before I started watching your channel I thought I had pretty good auto repair knowledge, lol, wrong, not even close, things have changed so much over the years and I was stuck in the past but I’m slowly catching up again, thanks!
I am an old school shade tree mechanic who finds why the high tech mechanics cant fix a problem and starts changing parts till the customer gives up and sells it to me or asks if I can help Thank you for your honesty and integrity, you proved to me that not all shops are inept.
Correction: The Auto Zone application process involves 3 questions: Do we sell performance parts, is blinker fluid real, and do we know what we're doing. If the answers are yes, yes, and no, you get hired.
I keep watching because what you do is real. You address problems pragmatically, you never scrimp on the extra work to do things right. Just a shade tree mechanic here in Arkansas but I love your videos. Keep on with it bro
The real tip here is not the head fake by the harmonic balancer. It is that you made those threaded rods at various lengths with the one end squared off (for the socket?) and you knew they could help get that puller working. Awesome insight and ingenuity. ( A trick from meemaw? ). Great video Eric.
I've been a Master mechanic for over 30 years. I bought a brand new 2005 Sport Trac 4.0L from the dealer off the showroom floor. After about a hundred and ten thousand miles, I had weird issues. Let's just leave it at weird issues! After about a week of sweating the diagnostics and scratching my head that very same issue finally smacked me in the face. Don't sweat it brother, it's one of those one-in-a-million issues unique to the vehicle and/or engine combination.
It's a Ford LoL. Sorry I heard Ford Fusions don't go to repair shops , those are really good vehicles. But I can't talk, I'm always working on my 2007 Malibu LoL
I've learned a lot since you tube came out and I can't believe all of the years that I turned a wrench that I never had a garage or power tools and I've noticed from watching you that you use them wisely. Some of the guys just start buzzing the bolts right in. Its a great feeling to know that there are good mechanics still out there, but not that many. You should have used one of the kids to help you on just the fan to see what dad has to do every day
I got a job at Kragen (a.k.a Kragen/Checker/Schucks, which is now O'reilly) back when I was a teenager and you had to answer multiple choice questions on a computer when you were applying, stuff like "if the customer said they had water on the passenger side floor board what could be the issue". I'm sure at autozone its probably more or less the same thing the but the answer for all questions is "replace the O2 sensor".
I honestly doubt if there would be any questions these days about actual cars, other than the top three auto related things they do. Change windshield wiper blades, Change batteries, read OBD codes. Their main jobs these days are cashier, stock boy, janitor.
Love, loved ! ! the night ride in upstate Ny. I don't think you have anything to be sorry for Eric. These videos are all lessons learned by our great educator. Lol THANKS SMA ! ! !👍👊💪
That being said...I've learned through the years, that the best indication that a person is worthwhile and valuable is: When they can easily make fun of themselves openly. That's the reason you have the best mechanic show on the net....keep up the great work, and thanks for all you do making these videos for us 👍👍👍
You get an immediate thumbs up from me because you are an honest mechanic that owns his mistakes. No arrogance at all. I would go to you without hesitation.
You are no doubt one of the best mechanics out there and believe me they are hard to find. Great sense of humor you have as well..I truly enjoy watching your videos!
Thumbs down and loss of respect? Naw, the fact you caught it and was able to accept responsibility for missing it. That in itself speaks volumes on you as a technician and man. Definitely will continue following you Sir.
That's it !!, Doctor 'O - Its time to for you to hang up your spanners (or wrenches in the USA) and swap places with Mrs 'O and see how ya get on in the office answering the phone and making lunch. But seriously though, Its great that you're willing to show your mistakes too. Big thumbs up from me :)
We all have over looked things at times but that’s where determination comes in and preavious situations reminds us to take another look. Thanks for the video, don’t knock yourself up over it after all we are humans.
Thanks for showing that you are a normal human too. I had a very similar whoopsie the other day, car came in for a roadworthy found A/C belt shredded and a rub mark on timing cover. I did not think about it just told him to come back for some new belts, fitted the belts started up and knock knock goes the 2 piece balancer, DOH. Subaru told him about the balancer at last service.......
Autozone is the place when everything else is closed & you "might" find the part at twice the cost. This happened to my Ranger; belt squeaking, changed pulleys, tensioners, and a bad alternator and squeak continued. Not until I got under the truck and inspected the harmonic balancer and found what appeared to be a "two" pully system. Sure enough I was dumbfounded when I took it off and looked similar to one on your video. It's a miracle that that belt did not come off and tangle itself on the fan. Good video and thanks for sharing.
E.O. your the man! If there were more shops like yours, I would would trust them with my vehicle anytime and never complain. Keep on trucking and do not be so hard on yourself, let us not so know it alls do that..LOL!
Hope I can be as good as you someday. Been watching your videos for a while and as a newer tech I try to be as honest and thorough as you. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for taking us with you on the road trip to get parts, that's half the fun! This is one of your best videos yet. - I liked it so much I finally subscribed, not because of your embarrassment but what you experienced is typical in my line of work. Often what I "think" I see on initial inspection is not what's really there. Good job Eric!
We all make mistakes but we all notice our mistakes when we go back and find them!we are humans thank you so much for your videos and tell mrs o I like it when she helps you on the repairs thanks CK
Eric, all you have done is prove that you're actually human... when I watch some of your videos, you seem to be more than that! I've been in the parts end of the business for many years-- everything from Mom and Pop stores to dealerships starting when I was 17. One of the toughest things when you're young in the parts business is dealing with the oldtimers who think that just because you're young, you don't know anything. I used to love to prove them wrong, but the one thing I always did was treat them with respect! In my later years (I'm now retired), I would be working alongside of the "whippersnappers" who thought they knew everything, and would be gratified to see the oldtimers turn down assistance from the young'uns to wait for me to help them. Keep up the good work... I enjoy your videos!
Dan I have a 02 ford explorer sports track just went hay wired I had it checked out and then the codes showed po102 and 113 and 122 and 1504 first one is low input next one high input next one low input can you please help me get my truck fixed?
It's one thing to make a mistake. It's another to just not give a rip about your work. Eric O makes mistakes, and owns them. The "Zone" guys just don't give a rip. Don't know which you are writing about, so I thought I'd just cover them both. Or maybe you meant something completely different?
don't feel bad Eric, I've made worse mistakes lol. As usual very entertaining to watch you and very educational. Keep up the awesome work. To answer your question I do work every third Saturday, including this one...
I didn't see a mistake. You just didn't see the problem right away is all. We had problems with parts and suppliers all week and i believe it's gonna get worse. Nice to see you were working with all your favorite parts brands.....LoL.
Warms my heart to see someone using Kroil. The oil that creeps. Used plenty in my day. The king of penetrating juice. Nothing wrong with making a mistake. At the end of the day the rig was fixed.
I agree you didn't spot the pulley the first time. So, you did the next look, good job. Autozone is a no-go zone. I have all the auto part stores around me. The only one I will use if I must is Advance because of the online codes.
I got here from EricTheCarGuy Always nice to learn ways to diagnose problems and how mechanics think. I work on my own cars since a teenager out of necessity. Thanks for taking your time to explain =)
After all the videos I've watched I finally heard Eric use a cuss word, even though he censored it... (tsk tsk) It makes me feel better. Thanks Eric you da man love your channel!
Eric, a man is humbled when they can move onward by admitting his mistakes. I was a field mechanic n not much on automotive experience. I have since had to retire due to back problems. But I enjoy watching your videos n learn something evertime. I have 70k into tools, n I honestly miss the cleaner jobs of my past. Look, listen, n think n take action imho. Always go with the basics before you go into fault codes n diagnostic charts n codes. Cat is the toughest critter on the planet, due to their lack of sharing knowledge n procedures for field mechanics. A guy works hard enough to stay up with technology. With all the changes at 1000 mph today it's discouraging allot of guys to pursue a career in heavy equipment let alone automotive. Yet, they'll never develop a robot to turn wrenches all day n slip n crawl around D11s everyday. If I had to do over, I would have gotten in VW, Volvo, Land Rover ect,,, It would have made life allot easier in my opinion. Keep doing your videos dude, I really enjoy learning still n laughing along with ya. Ty
Eric, that was a beautiful 5-minute diag! Why be so hard on yourself? I just saw this EXACT same scenario on a Ford explorer this past summer at a local shop here in PA. Truck would start and run, but misfire on acceleration. Kind of amazing that the belt doesn't come off and the truck keeps running with the harmonic balancer separated like that lol
old Volvo's 740 and 940 (and maybe even 240 and 360) also have these crank balancer separation issue. Luckily on those the crank sensor is on the bell housing. But when you go change a cam belt you think you set the crank to #1 TDC. and the: No start! WTF why won't it start? If you don't know about that balancer problem you will go insane looking for the problem...
@@coffeeloungeofficial2881 This is a part that's going to fail with age on any older car. The only alternative are liquid filled pulleys which cost about $300 versus maybe $40 for this one.
You asked what it takes to get a job at Auto Zone, well I can tell you because I just started a 2nd job there earlier this month so that I can pay my wife's & daughter's doctor bills thanks to Obamacare. I have no auto experience other that working on my own & friends cars since I was a teenager. You are spot on when you mentioned the check box for a pause. AZ is hard up for workers because they currently have over 10,000 job openings in the US. When you called AZ they should have taken your number so that they could put the part on hold for you. If they gave you a hard time about the tax exempt claim then they most likely were a DIY store & not a commercial store. The commercial stores are the ones that handle selling to the local shops. I work at a DIY only store so I deal with idiot customers most of the time & 98.5% of the time they buy the Dorman or Valuecrap branded parts.
I bought a set of valuecrap spark plug wires for my truck the other day...why? Because the over-priced set was garbage, intermittent no-spark on random cylinders and after jiggling around the plug wires it would work fine for a bit then start missing again...brand new engine and wasn't running on all 6 cylinders again...out came the ole brain and said well its gotta be the plug wires since when you move the wires around it starts missing/hitting. So to the parts store I went for the $20 plug wire set, 10 minutes problem solved. Just because you pay more doesn't necessarily mean you get a better product sometimes. I know that's often not the case but seems to be with already over-priced re-manufactured junk parts from these parts stores. I seem to have better luck pulling parts off vehicles at the Pick A Part lots HAHA!!.
Interesting he shuld mention Red Green, because that's who I immediately thought of the first time I saw Eric. And Eric, don't beat yourself because you missed the crank pulley malfunction, we've all missed seeing things that were obvious. We're just human. You're a great mechanic though, even I would say exceptional. Be proud of yourself.
What I like about this video is that it is totally honest. It shows the real world with nothing taken out and nothing added in it's just real and no music to take away from it.

Never met a perfect person. But have met a few that thought they were. Love that you are human like most of us! Merry Christmas!
Always appreciate your humbleness! Yes, we do make mistakes, but the professional part of making them is to admit with confidence.
Dammit...you cannot be makin these mistakes, Mr.O!!! It makes you look, well, human!
Mr. O You are not an idiot, It happens to the best of Us. YOu are a great teacher of mechanics. Do not belittle yourself.
E.O. your the man!
Eric you are the best. Admitting your oversight is proof that you are a great mechanic and human besides.😂😂😂😂
We all make mistakes but we all notice our mistakes when we go back and find them!we are humans thank you so much for your videos and tell mrs o I like it when she helps you on the repairs thanks CK
Most likely Mrs. “O” would have noticed the bad pulley. - lol. Great job - we’re all human and the the car now starts.
Keep going. What you do for us is amazing. We love what we do but sometimes we forget why we do it. Eric reminds us why we love doing this.
The man that never made a mistake never mended anything.
Don't be so hard on yourself we all make mistakes and from a lot of the videos I watch of yours, you are constantly fixing others mistakes
Hurrying on a Saturday night .... We've all been there Eric.
Cat's out of the bag, machining with a serpentine belt. Selling my machine shop tomorrow!
:))
now that what you call an engine lathe
Another reason not to get an electric car. LOL
You will NEVER get a thumbs down from me ever. It is now midnight, I've watched my goodnight video and now I can go to bed. Thanks.
Mistake or not, Eric is the best mechanic I've ever seen hands down. Besides, who doesn't make mistakes anyway?
The AutoZone rant was epic. Lol. Eric O is THE BEST MECHANIC out there!!!!
Show me someone who never makes a mistake and I'll show you someone who never does anything.
Don Bailor, you've meet Mrs. Lobo? 😂
Dan I have a 02 ford explorer sports track just went hay wired I had it checked out and then the codes showed po102 and 113 and 122 and 1504 first one is low input next one high input next one low input can you please help me get my truck fixed?
it looked like two pullys to me to, but hey the main thing is you did notice it before getting to far into it, great save if you ask me🖒
It's one thing to make a mistake. It's another to just not give a rip about your work.
Eric O makes mistakes, and owns them. The "Zone" guys just don't give a rip.
Don't know which you are writing about, so I thought I'd just cover them both.
Or maybe you meant something completely different?
My turd is a banana
don't feel bad Eric, I've made worse mistakes lol. As usual very entertaining to watch you and very educational. Keep up the awesome work. To answer your question I do work every third Saturday, including this one...
I didn't see a mistake. You just didn't see the problem right away is all. We had problems with parts and suppliers all week and i believe it's gonna get worse. Nice to see you were working with all your favorite parts brands.....LoL.
that was a mighty strange looking leaf jammed in there :)
You're videos are the most fun to watch ,combined with
Personality, realistic love how you don't try to hide anything show it all!
Astropunch I suspect Eric O can swear like a trouper , but he is an expert at holding it in while making the videos
Eric , i think that i'm fairly mechanical minded , but i wish i had 1/1000 th of your skills .. You're the man in my book!!
A fine design right there! Sawing through the crank sensor - that's the first time I've seen that! Well done, FoMoCo! :D
how in the WORLD has ford not fixed this? like really Ford. Really
old Volvo's 740 and 940 (and maybe even 240 and 360) also have these crank balancer separation issue.
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕
Whenever i pull a fan, i put cardboard between it and the radiator if theres room
me too, it is cheap insurance.
Greatest rant of all time...........Sure glad you decided to upload this one.
