  • The history of the rigid airship necessarily includes the evolution of the equipment and techniques used to manage them on the ground. From the earliest hangars built on the water to the massive tower masts built in the British Empire, this video contains rare images and footage of this often overlooked but vital aspect of the rigid airship experience.

This video was hidden by YT. I was searching for airship info in 2020 and your video never came up. This was a more than satisfactory video that was made on the air ships and I will recommend it.

Thanks to Richard van Treuren and Atlantic Productions for finding and posting this excellent video. I wish I had had it when I was writing my novel, "ZRS". I was rather pleased to see that in my descriptions of ground handling of airships, I got nearly all of it right. Rowan Partridge

Very nice video very nice footage I could do with all without all that vocalizing the background though it’s very distracting! Other than that it’s an excellent video maybe they could tone down the background music a little bit thank you!

It's a shame that rigid airships are such deathtraps.

Are they though? If a plane crashes, everyone on board will usually die. With an airship however, depending on the severity of the accident, almost all of the passengers can survive. And in the early days of these ships, hundreds and hundreds of planes were crashed as in that time, they were neither as efficient nor as safe. Sure, many ships went down too, and you might think they had the worst safety record of any type of possible transportation method, but this is not the case at all. Since when the crashes did happen near the mainland many people were often watching. Compare ww1 zeppelins with ww1 submarines which had far more casualties as a result of exploding even when not being hit by an projectile or a zeppelin bomb. So when submarines did sink, (many did sink too) no one was watching obviously and there was no hope for any of them to survive unless the sub was near enough to the surface.

TL:DR Both airships, submarines and planes in their early days had many losses, though still many people consider airships to be particularly unsafe because of how dramatized their accidents were or how much more attention they received.
