I bought all their albums and saw them live, too. BTW, Kevin Godley is the one who looks like Cat Stevens!

I once knew a young lady in the mid 1970s that went to a different high school than I. We went to the same church and our families wanted us to get together. She seemed to like me a lot, but I was into muscle cars and cruising the night life at Forest and Marsh lanes in Dallas in Vella, my bright yellow 1969 SS 396 Chevelle. My mother asked me if I would speak to this girl on the phone and then she wanted me to take her on a date. I would call her, but I let her know that I wasn't seeking her affection. I did have a picture of her on my wall that she sent me. After a few years I told her that I wanted to go to college and she didn't have to worry about me and could date whoever she wanted. Anyway, we were not going steady at the rime. We just hung out on occasion. I let everyone know that we were not in love, until I made her my wife.

The meaning goes even deeper than that - it's about the way men are brought up to think that expressing their emotions openly is a sign of weakness ("be quiet - big boys don't cry") so it follows that to admit feelings of love shows weakness, so denying them shows strength.
