  • In this lesson I talk about a commonly used Thai phrases "หมดทุกอย่าง /mòt túk-yàang/". Thai language learners might misunderstand that this phrase means "everything is finished.", but Thai people actually use this phrase to describe that everything is all good!

Hi Mod , I’ve been watching your channel since about your 3rd Video years ago. You have nearly 100k subscribers and you don’t even post much. Thailand is becoming so popular people must be looking for language tips. I’ve noticed a lot of changes in my 16 years traveling and part time living in Thailand. I hope your wonderful country doesn’t change to much and loose it’s identity and culture. I suppose change is inevitable however sometimes not for the best . Still love your videos and always find them helpful. Thanks Mod 🙏🏻 Be well !

Too many tourists in Thailand. It has changed the culture over the past 30 years. The Thai's who deal with the tourists aren't so friendly anymore and the tourists are mostly arseholes.

I'm delighted to read your comment khun Andy. Thank you for taking your time to write your comment. I wish I had more time to post more often but I'm raising young children at the moment. Thailand is indeed getting more visitors in the recent years, if you go to popular destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket or Samui you will find them quite crowded. Nevertheless there are still plenty of more quiet places in Thailand to explore and experience real Thai cultures.

I watched a video about Thai names for animals recently in which 'mot' means 'ant', obviously it means something different in this phrase, but What?

It bothers me when Thai teachers roll the R when no native Thai I know talks like that. I’ve been living in Thailand for 10 years and when I want to make my friends laugh I roll the R as in รรระวังรรรถ The question remains, how is it proper to roll the R when no one does it?

The same way its ok to not pronounce the 'r' in February... up to you. There's proper and correct, and there's common usage

@@omegoa Kru Mod exaggerates the R sound for teaching but I bet with family and friends she doesn’t do it. Your February comparison was a nice try but it doesn’t work with my question.

yes, correct, it's for teaching purposes. I've known Kru Mod for years, she doesn't roll r's in everyday language with friends and family, and on occasion in a video will make mention of it. She like other thai language teachers roll r's because it is the proper place to start, and actually has an interesting history as part of formal language. More advanced students will begin to drop r's, replace r's with l's, leave out parts of words, etc. As an aside, in person Kru Mod is classy, elegant, polite, funny, intelligent, and understands western minds better than any thai teacher I've seen, so yes, totally within character for her start students off with the more polite rolling r's.

@@paulbytheriver4976 🙏 thanks for the kind explanation. I emphasize these points because I was laughed at and misunderstood often rolling the Rs. Many local Thai’s didn’t understand when I asked for instance “Hotel” and then finally when I switched to the L sound i was understood. So my emphasis is that foreigners are being taught in a way that’ll cause them trouble when Thai is troublesome already (5 tones etc) 🙏 so I decided to become the R police and express that rolling the Rs is not an asset for foreigners 🙏 I will never say ราตรีสวัสดิ์ ever! 😂 I leaned it in school and was laughed at. Please teach us the way you actually speak 🙏

      I don’t even bother rolling the (r)
Unless the word required it for example school ( โรงเรียน )
I just replace it with an L now. That sounds more natural to a thai speaker. Would you not agree?
