  • Alan, KB1DJ, asks Dave if mobile antennas need to be grounded. He uses an ATAS-120a, but all of the washers he uses seem to rust very quickly. Dave has some great advice on how to protect your mobile antennas from lightning and corrosion!

My brother was a ship fitter at Todd Seattle and built those frigates that mixed steel hull and deck and aluminum superstructure. He described the technology of “fusing” (welding) the superstructure to the deck. They welded the aluminum together then hoisted the superstructure onto the raised steel around the openings after applying a “chemical of some sort” to the steel. Then everyone got off the ship and it was blasted with hi voltage until the structure fused with the steel. He told my grandfather (a ham from about 1913) and my grandpa said to him that “those ships are going to rust to death in 10 years.”

I'm glad that your answers are always well grounded, and not too salty! See what I did there, antenna ground? corrosive salt? Anyway, great explanation, I knew I had been missing a couple of things regarding grounding!

The creation of a car or truck to make it a counterpoise is a simple, but involved process. My ATAS, and 6M VHF/UHF antennas, are on a large plate of aluminum, as the first point of contact. All panels and the frame, engine, transmission, etc are connected by straps It works very well.
