What kind of extra time did they have that we don't have? What have we replaced that free time with? It is amazing that the city virtually looks the same today. All of the building are still there. The only difference is today's population of SF is uber-wealthy. It makes it hard to live there if you are middle class. Forget it if you are working class.
And the car that passed with a big white star on the door. San Francisco was a coastal city with a huge port and would have been rather militarized in the 40's
Well you know we failed society when you can't even afford to pay rent or feed yourself with a full time job, if it's been deemed "unskilled". These market sellers worked "unskilled" jobs and they earned enough for a home and to provide for their families and live comfortably. Now we think, being able to afford basic necessities is a luxury you have to compete for with increasingly demanding skills.

Having lived in San Francisco all of my life I can only identify the Powell and Market Street cable car turn table, a quick street scene on Russian Hill, fish markets and Fisherman's wharf as authrentic San Francisco street scenes. The beach scenes are definitely not any San Francisco beach and certainly not Ocean Beach. The other city scenes are probably Los Angeles the reason being that San Franciscans don't dress that lightly with summer dresses and short sleeve shirts because of the morning and evening fog. This is a strange conglomeration of images that show 1940s California but the title is misleading.

Wow this is the time where oakland was skyrocketing with population and Oakland was a peaceful place to live in. All because of this beautiful city in the 1940
There were a lot of clips of non-SF places. Fisherman’s Wharf and a few scenes of cars on the hills and cable car were real. Other than that maybe the scenes were of a SF in an alternate universe.

Yeah, no obesity, etc, and people were dying on average in their 60s... Let's not over-romanticise the past. World War II had either just finished or was still going on at this time... we were still a bunch of savages just as we are now. And they had pretty shit healthcare, no gay right, no women's rights, few worker's rights....
What wonderful videos, taking us back 83 years ago to San Francisco County, California, USA 🎉
1) How long must it have taken for women to get dressed like that, with hair curled, hats, gloves, accessories, nylons with girdles and garters, and all the makeup? What kind of extra time did they have that we don't have? What have we replaced that free time with? To quote a song, "If we had the chance, would we do it all again?"
2) It's the absence of plastic sports shoes, t-shirts, and jeans that makes everybody look so elegant.
Thank you for another beautiful restoration.
At that time, companies did not invest much in clothing, clothing was mostly social and standardized. Including the children
Well stated context.
The ladies were gorgeous and the men strutted with confidence and purpose.

Must have been a nightmare to drive a car with a standard transmission in San Francisco.
The nightmare would be bad brakes.
Nothing to it, just hold the emergency brake at the stop lights when your on a hill, I had a Vega with a stick, no problem at all
@@antonsmith7235 The hand brake on my manual transmission did not work, so I learned how to ride the clutch on San Francisco hills.

My first two cars were manual. I had no problem with any hill in SF. One just develops the skill and it becomes second nature.
I wonder why the Fisherman's Grotto area was restricted and no cameras were allowed? Was this during WWII?

I noticed around 8:00 with the beach scenes that hardly anyone is in the water. If I am correct, the average temp of the Pacific around San Fransisco is only around 60 degrees
even in the middle of summer.
When we go to the beach here, it's mostly just the beach itself :P The water is largely left to surfers with a bit of experience.

Compare pre diversity to post diversity.
Only one way to make out country great again.
It is amazing that the city virtually looks the same today. All of the building are still there. The only difference is today's population of SF is uber-wealthy. It makes it hard to live there if you are middle class. Forget it if you are working class.
Sorry, but most of those buildings were never in SF and aren't here today.
The uber-wealthy were in SF then too. Many mansions in Pac Heights and the Marina were built in this period.
It would be awesome to see these next to the same streets and beaches today!
Great film of a time when San Francisco was a nice place to live and visit.
Way.. before the summer of love. When SF was playing it straight.
No pun intended?
Some of us who later enjoyed the Hippy scene were little kids in the 40's & loved the city during both epochs.
Did you see the sign saying restricted area. No Cameras?
And the car that passed with a big white star on the door. San Francisco was a coastal city with a huge port and would have been rather militarized in the 40's
It's sad to.say that we will never get this kind of lifestyle again
I miss how clean the streets were back in the day, w/o homeless people on every corner.
SF today is nothing but a crime infested slum. It's not safe to walk at night anymore unless you're in a large group.
Of course, this was before plastic bags and bottles era.
@@AK-jm1sc Sorry, I don't believe any of that. Typical Americans have a poor sense of personal finance and are lazy. You don't see a lot of legal immigrants living on the streets, just lots of blks, whts and illegals.
That's what happens when you practically invite them from all around the country.

The first shot isn't San Francisco, that's Philadelphia. Though it vaguely resembles the Bay Bridge, that's actually the Ben Franklin Bridge.
Hahahahah! It's actually supposed to resemble the Golden Gate, not the Bay Bridge. Never been to Philly but I've been to SF many times. Also those buildings in the foreground, no way they're in San Fran. They're on the East Coast, no doubt about it!
@@klausrain111 Well it's over ten years older than both, so it's not "supposed" to resemble either. :P The crossed beams on the towers and the grayish color are much more reminiscent of the Bay Bridge though

There may be some LA in there (Santa Monica Professional Building, Bank of Hollywood…).
