      Thanks ever so much Edward! Hopefully so. Certainly is going to be an interesting build. NGSW was an amazing show. Such a shame it was the only one I ever got too. Devil's Bridge was just outstanding! Really inspirational. Many thanks indeed!

    This seems a great idea and have never seen a layout like the one you are planning before. The mini trains stuff does look good and I have been slightly tempted by them sat in the cabinets at my local model shop!

    Quite an exciting and interesting project. I'd suggest getting in touch with the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth, south London, for further research and advice. I am certain that nurses would not have been seem at the front, but would have provided invaluable help to casualties returning to the UK.

    I have also been toying with the idea of a WW1 layout, a bit of good reading material on the subject I suggest is "trains to the trenches" by Andrew Roden. It describes railways on all fronts (including the home front) in the war and describes the trench railways and how they operate. The trench railways had a sort of two tier system. The first was as a sort of conventional railway with a timetable and signals etc. But when they got closer to the front the wagons switched from steam to petrol and diesel, this part of the system had no time table and practically no signalling and largely ran only at night. I'm thinking of modelling a junction where the two systems met.
    Good luck with your project

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info Samuel! Never knew that about the signals. Have been looking out for that book myself. Hope to get a few petrol locos to join the fleet soon, to recreate that sort of seen of them swapping over too. Really is very interesting system indeed, and learning more and more interesting things about it all the time :)

    • @Sammy1234568910
      @Sammy1234568910 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well they would have been basic hand operated signals, not connected to signal boxes or anything like that.I have been looking about for similar engines and I found these 3D printed designs, however like most 009 kits the chassis is not included

    Fantastic project and great to see more OO9 stuff, planning more of mine soon. There theme is perfect and you will have avmassive amount of modelling options to play with. Nurses will have been there to do first aid and escort back to the field hospital or on board the ambulance trains that came about during this conflict. As far as I know mk1 and 5 did battle together. Can't wait to see how this progresses. Make sure to test thise pounts before fixing them, I found them finicky. Top work Callum.

      @SDJR7F88  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks ever so much Mike! It really is quite a fun little scale isn't it :) Oh yes, certainly will be an interesting project. Excellent news! Might be able to have them on the little make shift field platform then. Just picked up a few more tanks to add to the collection of thinks to build, sadly there's not a Mk5 in 1:76 scale, but there is a Mk4, which is not far off. I've also picked a Wippet Tank, refueling truck and artillery truck. Will do :)

    Looks like a great project mate! As for the nurse figures , maybe you could have an aid station scene with the wounded men being treated by nurses (could say they're from the Royal Army Medical Corps) as a way of fitting them into the layout..can't wait to see it progress!

    tip: its a must that you create "trench mud" because in ww1, the somme and most other french battle fields would look like ploughed fields. my suggestion is to mix pva or wood glue with earth and bits of rubble. if you want to make it look like it has been rained on paint it with some glossy varnish, just bewhere of warping on the baseboard.

    • @SDJR7F88

      Thanks mate! Certainly is going to be an interesting project. Would really love to do a Battle Field Tour at some point (I think that's what they are called). Yep, got one on order. Though it will be larger along side the Baldwin featured here (as this one is really Hoe scale), but that not to much of a worry. :)

    I think you will find it is pronounced Ammy-on, and not Ami-ens, but no matter - the Brits used their own pronounciation which was awful. Wipers for Ypres (Eeper) for instance. The HOe stuff is 1:87 scale whereas your other stuff is 1:76 so it will show. Better not to mix it too close at least. Things like nurses, heavy artillery and supply dumps were to be found at the rear - not in a forward area, so dont try to model a front line environment. Tanks were more often to be found broken down in repair areas than at work on the front, they were very unreliable. So that is another reason to model a rear area. The steam locos attracted enemy fire so also were unpoplular at the front. Headlights were a definate no no for the same reason. Consider using plenty of camouflage for both rail and artillery, as spotter aircraft took valuable photos for the gunners. Dont fall into the trap of having soldiers in fighting poses. I have seen one or two WW1 layouts that featured this and it is wrong on so many levels. Try to get hold of some of the good books available on the subject of WW1 trench railways as there are now quite a few available. Also dont forget to remove the large wheels at the back of those early tanks as they were soon found to be more of a liability than a help so were removed long before 1918. And dont forget a trench was NEVER straight. It zig zagged and had lots of features rarely modelled by so called enthusiasts. Ammunition was carried in huge numbers before a 'push' but after a battle it was more likely to be empty shell cases, trench building materials (wire, timber, duck boards, canvas, and lots of wounded even when it was 'quiet' on the western front. For that reason it would probably make more sense to have your intended front line in the opposite direction to the one you have decided upon. Have your viewer observe the layout as if their backs were to the front line instead of looking towards it, then your railway will be bringing stuff to and from an imagined standard gauge railhead. I might also mention that your choice of insulated points may come to haunt you later when you find that smaller 4 whl locos dont like them. With such a small scale the locos need all the help they can get to maintain electrical contact at all times and those points do not meet that requirement. That is why electrofrog points are the norm for 009 even though they cost more. The Yankee 2-6-2 and the brigadeloks shouldnt have any problems though, but the British used the 4-6-0 Baldwin & Hunslet steam locos. 0-4-0 types were usually petrol Simplex machines that were used for carrying goods towards the front itself where steam dare not venture. Hope this helps.

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for all the info Shanty! Oh yes, I covered my pronunciation in the video description, as I knew I had said it wrong after I filmed that take ;) The layout certainly will depict a rear area of the battlefield, nearly all the locos I got are steam so far, though I hope to get a Simplex for hauling the troop train. Been looking for figures, and as you say most are in fighting positions, though I have found a few standing and sitting ones, that will be perfect. As for the tank, it's all ready been done ;) I've just built the kit, minus the wheels, as covered. I've also added a couple of rails to the top. Thanks for the info on the stock too. Got a 4-6-0 Baldwin on order, along with a 'Tin Turtle' Simplex Kit. Thanks ever so much for all the very helpful info! Will be sure to keep coming back and recapping from it :)
