This wonderful symphony caused Tchaikovsky much heartache, but it is still a masterpiece and the first symphony written by anyone who hadn't studied in Germany/Austria. Svetlanov does well but the tempo marking for the 2nd movement is a quarter-note (crotchet) = 63, making this much faster than the composer's intended speed. The Finale is a glorious riot and who cares if it occasionally descends into bombasm once in a while? Don't we all? This is truly a remarkable piece by a fledgling composer and so much better than the 3rd, which would follow in 1875.

Actually, I happen to enjoy Tchaikovsky's 3rd symphony, nicknamed "The Polish" due to its "di polacca" marked finale. 😁😁😁😁

Svetlanov is a giant! A few years ago I bought a collection of all Miaskovsky Symphonies conducted by him. There's about 26 in all, some never previously recorded, with Svetlanov having to finance the orchestra himself! Nobody else brought out the Russian character better.

@@alandouglas4959 Rotfl. Even the orchestration of woodwinds - bassoon and flute doubling at the second octave - apart from similar thematic stock. The broken thirds in the strings even the choice of instruments. Its pretty glaring after knowing the Stravinsky well before hearing this. Stravinsky said that Tchaikovsky was "the most Russian of all of us". He was called neo-classical for a reason.

I'll not say I did not like the piece. But I waited for something more tragic. The Second Movement says "Land of Desolation, Land of Mists". I did not feel any desolation. I felt like walking through some snowy Meadow and building a snowman.

John Williams borrowed more than once from Tchaikovsky tbh... the Han & Leia love theme is very similar to the main theme from the first movement of his violin concerto and “Rey’s Theme” is borrowed from the beginning of this work (albeit in a different key): m.th-cam.com/video/527Bb9IGZUE/w-d-xo.html

When you look at the formal decisions Tchai makes one sees he was mature and inventive . I hate this old stuff and its backward harmonies and the progressions we've heard a million times . thankgod for Schnittke and Ustvolskaya etc. If I was in the audience the 2nd movement here would be a good place to let my dog from out of my coat and take a big yawn and FART!Onlt the Horn saves the 2nd mov. from really being a bore . how boring is this 2nd mov. I'm amazed that Nikolai Rub and some others didn't realize how stupendous the 1st piano concerto was when the composer played it for them .Maybe they were shocked at how good it was and insanely jealous! The question of courseis why are the 2nd and 3rd piano concerti so disinteresting andI think there is a smaller piano concertante piece too thatis insipid that cello with orchestra piece -never cared for it or the Serenade Melancolique . Doesn't matter it will always be more fun than what Arensky tcherepnin and so many others left us. te Scriabin piano concerto ? Why did Richter even bother . He sees what is blind to da rest of us . Heifets recorded Conus ! Well the libraries purchased it I'm sure back then ! This Russian music is too sentimental too long ago just like Rach -We don't need it our sensibilities in this century are moved quite beyond it ! Hooray for Gidon Kremer and his triumphant sponsorship of New and Needed Voices !!!
