  • Looking for cheap and cheerful wheels? Look no further than the Accent. I like the new Scion iA more, but the low price on the Accent beats it for those on a budget.

    Great review. It's definitely a car that's worth buying. It's not just the value. It's the build quality and overall dynamics. The fuel economy is pretty good. The power it delivers is very usable and even better with the manual transmission. It's also a very safe car. The 2018 model will be out soon and the remaining 2017's will just be given away - anywhere from $10-$14k. This is an excellent car that many should look into. Any time you know people who have put 100k miles on it and had zero issues that's a good sign. Also if you know people who have been in an accident in one and were untouched it will really surprise you how safe and solid this car is. In effect for the real world uses it's a better car than a Ford Focus even though it's a class different. It's also about as stable as a 2012-2016 Subaru Legacy and just as quiet.

    My first car was an accent from 10 years ago. It's amazing how far it has come. 12 hour drives to and from college without cruise control at 6'4" is not fun. I wouldn't spend over 2 grand on a car without cruise control.

    Hi, AlexOnAutos team. I don't know if you guys can make this happen, but im gonna ask any way. When you guys are showing the interior, could you put the car in a dark garage or film a small portion of the interior shot at night - to show how the interior dials and knobs light up (or don't light up) at night. Please also show reading lights and any lights along the door seals.Also, please show how the exterior lights "behave". This would be greatly appreciated. I love your in-depth reviews, otherwise. Keep up the great work!!!

    Alex -- I had a few feeling you were going to get around to that Scion you were so impressed with earlier. This Hyundai just doesn't cut it in 2013 whereas that Scion seems so NOW for only a little bit more. But it's so worth it.
    (By the by -- I sent you an email regarding a group that could/might do music for you. I got no response and I'm just checking here to see if you even got it.)

    Alex, your thorough and comprehensive reviews are terrific. Thanks! I've got a 6-spd manual GLS (Sport in USA) Accent and Alex's review is accurate. I average above rated fuel economy in spring-fall [around 8L/100km] and below [9-9.5L/100km] in winter. While standard HP is class leading, acceleration off the line feels very slow. In addition, you definitely have to downshift to 4th at high speeds for passing power. However, I never feel underpowered in this vehicle. With 16 inch wheels, road noise could certainly be quieter and the ride can be jarring at times. That said, Saskatchewan roads are awful. The standard 6-speaker stereo sounds good, cargo and passenger room is very close if not best in class. Overall, you do get a lot for your money.

    I like the 20017 Kio Rio sedan. It feels and looks like a more high end car.The 6 speed is pretty fun. With the 18's out, they are selling for pennies in base form. I don't really care about Navi and such, I have a Garmin. I will look into aftermarket Blue Tooth options. I like that I can go with manual windows and less stuff to fail. Does the Rio handle better than Accent? I thought it handled fantastic. I wonder about adding Cruise, maybe getting a new wheel one day with it and plug it in?

    There are two very reasonable packages available for the 2015 Accent that make it feel less low-rent. For $600, you get the Popular Equipment Package which includes stereo mounted audio controls, cruise control, Bluetooth, sliding armrest with storage, and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. For an additional $800, you get the Style Package which includes upgrade upholstery, piano black interior accents, 16" alloy wheels and better tires, fog lights, projector beam headlights with LED accent, headlight welcome/escort function, rear disc brakes, and auto-up driver's window.

    Excellent review. Thanks for illustrating the 2015 model year. Many details were covered, yet I'll add some more which can compliment the Accent. I had a 2012 GLS sedan with every single option, 16" wheels and the top available package. It was the best car I ever owned. There was never anything to worry about with reliability or anything. In fact, I liked it so much I'm thinking about a 2015, 2016 or 2017. This base model in the review does something with the 14" wheels that the 16" wheels can't do - it takes bumps better, there's more sidewall. It sounds insignificant, yet it's not in everyday driving. The trunk is extremely huge for the size of the vehicle overall and I've used it for long trips with excellent success. The fuel economy at the peak was 43 m.p.g. average manually calculated on each complete fuel-up. That was with a super-conservative driving style, which probably isn't what to expect, but 33-35 m.p.g. can happen fairly easy. Even the newest base model has a lot of small details that are much better, than the one I owned. The 2015 has triple-flash turn signals, blind-spot mirrors, an outside temperature display on the gauges, back-lit window buttons, back-lit u.s.b. port, a reverse LCD so the radio display isn't blinding, new fuller rear tail-lights (better coverage and illumination), and sliding sun-visors. The base model also has a fold down arm rest on the driver's side seat which is better than the center console arm rest on the higher trim level. There are nuances to each car, but the main point on the Accent is, it's a high quality extremely reliable car that takes no second guessing. It's had an excellent track record the last four calendar years, even better than the competition. Hyundai as a company will back up their cars, whereas; if you buy a Ford Fiesta for instance and go past the 36,000 mile warranty, you're out of luck. That's the kind of support that all customers deserve, anything else is stingy. The MSRP price and available deals are quite a difference. The buying power has changed substantially in the last four years. Current leases are 0% for 66 months if that's an option somewhat wants, that offer didn't exist when I bought mine and Accents have actually dropped in price since then. There are dealerships if I decided to purchase a base that will undercut what I paid by close to $5-$6k, and that's another reason why I would buy one again. Something else no reviewer will ever mention - Active Front Head Restraints. If you get into that type of accident where whiplash occurs, you're out of luck in the competition. That's a point no one mentions. The car I owned was very safe (long-story) and saved lives. I'm sure the other brands do too, but they also don't have the backing of the steel that Hyundai owns either. I'll digress on other details, yet it's a car that's catching on. Look at sales reports. There's many metrics on why it's the best or with the best and this isn't even including what's right around the corner in the next calendar year.

      +Guy Portmonteau I bought a new Accent SE (auto) in '07. I currently have 202,000 miles of 50/50 highway/city driving and the car has given me nothing but exemplary performance. I'm gentle until the temp gauge is in its normal range but once it's warmed up, I drive it like I stole it. However, I do the maintenance by the book (and then some) and I think that is key to keeping it in good running order. This is the first car I've owned that never required any repairs under warranty, not even any adjustments. I really want to buy a new car but this one still fires up and runs like the day I drove it home from the dealership so I just can't justify selling or trading it. I have had some pretty nice cars in the past, but this little Accent has definitely been the most reliable. The only thing I wish was a little better is the noise insulation. It is actually quite loud out on the freeway but for a car that is so dependable, I can overlook that small flaw.

    • @guyportmonteau5021
      @guyportmonteau5021 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** That's great. For an '07 doing that well, it's definitely a keeper. The maintenance you did was a big part of that kind of successful ownership. Technically at this point you're saving a lot of funds and probably have a good idea what to replace it with. There's lots of good options out there in a few brands, but Hyundais are starting to really prove it now. So a 2007 probably has a timing belt? The 2012 and up have chains, which never need to be replaced only serviced, that was one feature that was unbeatable. Some brands make cars for profit only, but being that Hyundai is about quality too, speaks volumes. The company listens to its customers and that's why the next wave coming out will really solidify the previous progress.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but trunk is so big because it has no spare tire or even designated place for spare.
    Many manufactures ditch spare tires and I don't think it's a good thing. I cut side wall once and if not for spare tire, repair would cost me a lot more than one used tire. Friend of mine had 1 inch hole in tire and repair foam did not work at all.
    Alex, I think it would be very useful to mention if car comes with spare tire or not. Thank you for great review as always.

    Alex, I am a little confused by the acceleration numbers on these 'high' horsepower B class cars . With 130 hp this Accent should be several seconds faster to 60 than the 105 hp Yaris or Scazda iA . Where does all that extra power go?

    • @chrissorreda4982
      @chrissorreda4982 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Desperate4Attention Weight, gearing, quality of shitfs from the transmission, how efficient the stuff that transfers power from the engine to the wheels are. That's the things on top of my head. There's a lot more to it than just Horsepower. Hope this helps!

    • @guyportmonteau5021
      @guyportmonteau5021 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 6-spd auto does about 9.0 seconds 0-60 mph and the 6-spd manual does about 7.9 seconds 0-60 mph. It's better in the manual concerning acceleration. The auto has an ECO button that is too much restricted to efficiency (owned a GLS) but the manual has no computer over-ride of any type. It's very efficient too, but no ECO button. The power and the torque are two different things. They both arrive at higher rpm, that's part of how the style of the 1.6 is. It does alright, but if you want the best of both worlds and it doesn't bother you - buy a manual version. I test drove a manual version after having an auto for a daily driver and there is a night and day difference. The manual feels as fast as the fiesta 1.0 turbo three cylinder but without all the extra noise, the Hyundai is smoother, especially at lower speeds. In 1st gear the Accent is twice as fast as the Fiesta. The Fiesta has to hit 1,500 RPM for the turbo to kick in then the power and speed come on.

    Hoora Minneapolis! Hope you enjoyed the visit. As a hatch owner (2013 Focus), I have a hard time understand why America prefers sedans. The hatch is just too convenient to ever go back to a trunk...

    • @vikrambath2711
      @vikrambath2711 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joe Lorence Watching this I actually had the opposite reaction. If the sedan has just as much cargo space, why spend more to get hatch? (Granted, the hatch looks better, but how is it more convenient?)

    • @vikrambath2711
      @vikrambath2711 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonathan Altieri I can visualize that there are items that can fit in a hatch but but a sedan, but the hatch correspondingly can't fit longer items that might fit in a sedan. The question then becomes do you generally need to carry long stuff or tall stuff.
      (Oh, and I should admit that the opening of the hatch is bigger too, which is helpful.)
      I do wish that at least one reliable company would simply square off their sedan to make a proper wagon that is unambiguously more convenient.

    Of course you know I'll always take the hatch over the sedan any day. I used to own a 2010 Hyundai Accent SE hatch a while back, and I loved it for the four years I had it. Haven't driven the 2012-15 Accent yet, but I can tell you a few things about it. On the GLS sedan Accent, you can get cruise control with the Popular Equipment Package for about $600. I don't know how often Hyundai sells that package, but considering I see most of the sedan models without it, I'm betting that package would be hard to come by. Really, cruise control comes standard on the Sport hatch trim (one of the reasons I went with the similar SE trim on my old 2010). If you were going to recommend the GLS sedan, I would say check with your dealer to see if they can get one with the both Popular Equipment package ($600) and the Style Package ($800) which will practically turn it into a sedan version of the Sport hatch (sans the sunroof which is only on the Sport trim).

    after all this time on the market, I still don't hear people saying "my Hyundai has 275,000 miles on it." our Toyota Camry went 435k and we traded our Corolla at 250k. I still don't know if a Hyundai can get there without hammering your wallet.

    The Scion iA will be called the Toyota Yaris 'sedan' up here in Canada apparently. Scion Canada will not get the iA.

      +ThorMaxx Some of us are calling it the Tazda, Moyota or Scazda for ultimate sardonic effect. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that dealers would have far preferred the iM to be sold as a Toyota as it will be far more popular in Canuckistan than the iA sedan.

    Nice Job Alex.The Accent seems like one of the most boring cars in this and any segment. I am looking in this class, but I'll have to see how the Rio stacks up against the iA. I love the looks and interior of the Kia, but the higher trims only available in auto. Why the SX (sport version) would not have a manual option is beyond me.

    • @scf685
      @scf685 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gabe Pettinicchio The SX was offered with a manual but no one bought it so KIA killed it.

      Yes, I think it was available on the SX in either the 12' or 13'. It's a scary future for manual gearboxes, except for true sports cars.

    1st contact with service dept. Results. Rear deck to be replaced, they will call when it comes in. OK, that's good. The dealer said that the steering is fine, however it does drift at highway speed. They said that's normal for the Electric Power Steering. They added that many owners complain about this. One comment was "You do get used to it". Sent comments back to dealer, waiting for response. They said in email that they would re contact me in 48 hours. No they have no yet contacted me.

    The seats are REALLY uncomfortable so don't plan on any long trips. After 20 minutes my back was killing me. And I had to bring it back for repair issues the day after I bought it at 37,000 miles. I totally regret this purchase. Now I'm stuck with it for 6 years. Ugh.

      Lori these are great cars if dealer maintained like everything else on the market. When I bought my 16' sedan I made sure that it was only maintained by Hyundai and in fact it had. I did have to get a service when I bought it but it cost me about $110. At the 30,000 mile mark they get new fuel filters, total air filter change and synthetic oil change. This would probably be the only reason why it should be in for any repairs, if the service wasn't done anyways.

    • @lilflower25
      @lilflower25 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dealer did no maintenance. Something is burning, along with other issues. And the stereo systems sucks. I had a Ford Escort ZX2 and the system kicked azz. This is supposed to have 6 speakers. I can only hear 2 and they suck. I had to do very little maintenance in the 16 years that I had my Escort. I SO regret this purchase. I'm glad you lucked out. I was sold a lemon. In my opinion this car sucks. I should not have the issues I do when the car is only a year old. I would take my escort over this car any day. Wish I could get it back.

    • @tysonb8328
      @tysonb8328 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lori you're missing the point.
      The previous owners didn't maintain the car which is your problem. Alex did mess up, there's only 4 speakers in the Accent. At least my '16 has 4. I bought this car because in the car fax it was only maintained by Hyundai and I intend to keep it that way. It's illegal to resell a lemon so if you really think it's a lemon I'd challenge the dealership in court. I replaced my speakers with alpine type-s speakers and they sound much better coupled with an alpine type-R 12".

    • @lilflower25
      @lilflower25 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I'm challenging this nightmare alright. It's not my problem. It should have never been sold to me with issues that I was unaware of before I even drove it off the lot. I'm disabled on a fixed income so replacing the speakers is not an option for me. I'm so upset about this POS that I'm done with our conversation. Nice talking with you.

    I don't know...personally I'd probably kill myself if I had to live everyday with such a low rent interior. Seems to me that you'd have to be nuts to buy ANY of the cars at the super low end of the scale. 15k gets you an awful lot of used late model car. Accent or Jeep Wranger for the same price? No brainer. Accent or a used Fit? Accent or Tacoma? Yes, this thing gets great mileage, but so does a Prius or a Corolla. The only reason you'd really want the Accent is just to be able to say "It's brand new". And anybody who's impressed by your brand new Accent simply because it's new knows so little about cars that they'll believe anything you tell them. Meet my brand new Plymouth Neon.

      +Kip Amore Jeep Wrangler? Gas guzzler vs fuel sipper. Also someone may buy one just to have the warranty, something a used car may lack.

    • @kipamore
      @kipamore 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      scf685 The warranty is a facet of a new vs used car, but I think it's false economy. It's essentially a bet you make with the manufacturer that their brand new car, with 100% brand new parts, won't break. It's a stacked bet in that everything isn't covered forever. But Hyundai has a pretty great warranty.
      Speaking of false economy, in 5 years this car will be very cheap. I would guess about 5 or 6 grand. The Jeep or the Fit I mentioned will be doing a whole lot better. Wrangler particularly.
      But to argue against myself, there is a certain something that a brand new car makes you feel. Unfortunately, that feeling doesn't last as long as the payments. Then again, if we are just looking at how something makes you feel, I could be pretty happy with a $10,000 Jeep and a $5000 pile of cocaine.

    That's so bland and ugly, their designers should be fired. Thankfully, they can't go any uglier so the redesign for next year should be interesting.
