In this free video drum lesson, I want to show you how to play the opening drum beat from the song “Elephant” by Tame Impala, featuring the drumming of Jay Watson.
The drum beat is basically a shuffle, with the bass drum being played on all four beats of the bar. But with the use of odd time signatures, and a cool little hi-hat turn around, the snare drum back beat gets turned around also creating a very cool and quirky pattern.

Wouldnt it be ok to consider that everything is at 4/4 and the last beat would be the first of an unfinished 4/4? That way the backbeat stays in place.
Yes the whole song is in 4/4 idk why he's using odd time signatures

Good question...but that is just a matter of opinion at the end of the day. I think he plays the songs very well.
Gabe Aguilar The drums are played by Kevin Parker who also plays every other instrument as well. He also writes all the songs and produces he records. Pretty amazing! I personally love his drumming.

did jay do the drums for elephant? i thought most of the drums on the recordings were just kevin
It's really hard to tell from scanning the wiki page. You might be right! Anyone reading this know who it was?
according to wiki jay only played keys on Elephant, kevin did drums on all tracks

its Julien Barbagallo on drums in their live shows for the last year or so, Jay is pretty much exclusively on keys

Good playing but doesnt make sense to count in odd time signatures. The whole song is in 4/4
It makes sense to hear the drum parts in the groups and bars I've transcribed them. You can choose to count it however you like though.
