    When they made Fred, they broke the mould. "Oh bugger! Well I hope it's going to be a good 'un, 'cos there's only ever going to be one of him!" As it turns out, you know, he were bloody brilliant. Thank you for the Engineer in the flat cap with the greasy rag. Where ever you are Fred, be lucky fella.

    Imagine having half the logic and half the skill as Fred, would be in the upper echelons of craftsmen/engineer. I’m a 35 year old ex military engineer, yet still learn tricks watching Fred on camera. I anticipate skills and logical problem solving will be things in short supply soon. Manual skills will become the obscure in our modern world x

      As my Austrian colleague used to say when reviewing submissions from some of our business : "But where is the critical thinking ?". Fred's inventiveness shows an intelligent and crucially, practical mind at work. What's the problem ? How can a solution be improved ? And most of his skills were self-taught, or learnt on the job. Watching his videos makes me want to visit the huge steam rally that is held in Dorset each year.

    I almost got to meet him. I worked at a builders merchant called Cromptons up by Moses Gate because I’d moved up from London having married a Northern Lass. He’d had to apply for planning permission for his mine shaft and it was in the local gazette under planning notices so I wrote him a letter saying we’d be happy to supply all the materials and I could call round at a convenient time for him to discuss his requirements. He sadly died whilst the letter was still in the post. That’s one of my big regrets not meeting Fred. Unfortunately the marriage didn’t last as it was marriages she liked not actually being married. I was 28 then, I’m 48 now and would love a Bolton Lass to love (best girls in Britain) but I’m not likely to find one of them in Kingston Upon Thames now am I?

    • @areyouserious3092
      @areyouserious3092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bromley Co I'm going to be honest with you buddie I had trouble trying to understand what you are talking about? What has London's past got to do with you thinking that southerners see all notheners as rock workers????. The thing with people like yourself is that you seem to think all southerners are rich ignorant pigs that have not done o proper days work in their lives well let me tell you that's not the case the whole country contributed to the wealth of the UK and do you honestly think people down here have no idea of the ingenuity and hard work and pure genius that the north has shown over the centuries especially during the industrial revolution?. Because if that is what you believe then you really do have a low opinion of us. I personally do not that is why I was watching a video about Fred one of our national treasures not because I think he's a rock worker but because he was a brilliant man.

    In the early 80's my dad took myself and my Grandma (who loved Fred) to his house. My dad being an engineer they spoke for hours with Fred about everything, me being knee-high was in all honesty none-to-plus'ed, except for the fact that there was Fred Dibnah off the telly. However, the shaft up there on TH-cam did bring back memories, as I remember him talking about the neighbours not being to happy with him about to/or currently starting (forget which) a working mine shaft. Which he hoped to get to 30ft deep at the time.
