    Can we just talk about Gautham for a second?
    Gautham was one of the most surprisingly fascinating characters of the game. CrossCode's central theme, at least in my eyes, was how games, players, and developers interact with one another. While there's Sergey and Satoshi, who participated in the development of this game and are more or less proud of what they had done, there was Gautham. Gautham is a very cynical depiction of an overworked staff, forced to make a game that stopped being about the vision and became about the profit. At first, I had thought Gautham's suicide was tacky, but it wasn't until it was put into perspective that Gautham was one of the most abused characters in the game that it clicked.
    CrossCode also depicts video games as an escape, and I think there was a cruel beauty to Gautham's avatar, The Designer, being essentially an all powerful god that can just fly around and design a perfect world to compensate for having to participate in the cruel and unjust evotar interrogations. To some developers, or artists in general, their work is an escape. I can only imagine that being the god of the world you created was a good escape for Gautham. And there was nothing more beautiful than this fight: creating the ultimate experience for the player worthy of it, and the developer who challenged his godhood.
    This game was fucking beautiful. This soundtrack was beautiful as well. 10/10 game, all around.

      Oh, is that what this game is like...? :O
      I was like, really confused about some parts, but it certainly FELT deep... :?
      Hmm... Well you got Reverse Escapism in a way for someone like Lea and the Evotars who permanently live in the world, but yeah. :p But for humans that are like a foil to that, hmm... :?
      So that's what he's like...
      So what about Sidwell though? :p I wish you could fight him too or something. :? That was like his evil boss or something, right? Stupid Sidwell...

    At first, I was a bit disappointed that you and Sergey have to cheat to win this fight, because it would've felt a bit more satisfying to beat Gautham and "The Designer" on your own terms, however I realized that Gautham _wants_ Lea to win at this point, and through his psychosis, probably intentionally buffed himself beyond good measure to not only test Lea's skill, but to test the coding prowess of his old friend Sergey. Its not just a test for Lea, but the cooperation between Lea and Sergey, that Gautham has come to admire and respect over the course of the game, and up to the end Gautham demands high skill from not only Lea and the player, but from Sergey as well. Vermillion Tower may have been a test for your unaltered skill, but the final fight against The Creator, and the "Ultimate Experience" existed to be shared between Lea and Sergey, one last test for a fellow designer.

      @@leonardodelimaferreira8509 It was 100% Gautham coaxing them to do that cheat again.
      Remember the first time he gave her an impossible challenge? She failed as expected (the dodge thing), but the longer you the last the more he enjoys it. He does NOT like impossible challenges (he looked disappointed about it and even called it trivial), but he gets excited watching someone overcome what shouldn't be possible to overcome. He doesn't care how, he just wants to see the impossible beaten. That's why the 2nd time, when he gives her an essentially impossible slug to beat, when sergey and lea still overcome that, he's thrilled. Remember these game systems are so strict that it is a genuine challenge for sergey to do what he's doing, it's not just loading in gameshark and upping her stats.
      The last time he gives them an "impossible" fight he's very intentionally trying to see them do it again. He wants to watch the impossible be overcome once more. He's didn't want to win, he wanted all of this to end.
      I can't speak 100% as to why he loves seeing someone defeat what he thought was undefeatable, but maybe it has to do with how hopeless his situation has felt for him for so long. He himself is stuck in an impossible situation watching even one of his dear friends die in attempt to save his sister which ultimately fails. It's not uncommon for people who've felt complete despair that they're trapped in a horrific situation to really enjoy media that shows a hero overcoming an "impossible" situation.

  • @m3gAm37aLmAnX
    @m3gAm37aLmAnX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +110

    Let's see now....what factors in my mind make this one of the best final bosses I've ever faced in a video game?
    First of all, that slow divine build-up at the beginning, sounding like Megaman Zero 4...
    That transitions beautifully into a bass-lined symphony of Dancing Mad proportions with elements of both of Albert's battle themes from Megaman ZX Advent
    And then there's the actual boss itself: a heavenly elephant behemoth that couldn't look more Final Fantasy-ish if it tried.
    I know it's become a trope among JRPGs to essentially fight God as the final boss, but this ain't even a JRPG, and they pulled it off perfectly.
    This is it. It's a one-on-one, no holds barred duel to the death against pretty much the almighty "God" of CrossWorlds, and boy does Gautham fit the role of God in this situation to a tee.
    Not only is his "Creator" body literally based off Ganesha, who is basically God himself in the Hindu faith, but throughout the battle, he'll amp up his HP levels to sheer absurdity, surpassing even the quadrillions, just to prove his status as a god, and that even attempting to beat him is virtually impossible.
    He'll utilize full mastery over every single skill, technique, and elemental affinity you've acquired throughout the game in stunning 16-bit overglorified flashiness, which will make you feel like a total bad-ass for being able to memorize and dodge his attacks.
    The way that Lea and Sergey have to carefully co-operate in this fight in order to win is utterly mind-blowing, showing that the amount of determination they have is SO great, that eventually it can overcome the power of "divinity".
    I know Gautham's not exactly "evil" and that he's just gone completely insane, but that doesn't excuse this for being an excellent final boss. In the end, you really can't help but feel sorry for him. Sidwell trapped him, blackmailed him, and forced him to put his own life goals behind a blockade for years. After finally succeeding at what he ultimately wanted to accomplish, he felt there wasn't anything left for him anymore, and so he sadly took his own life.
    Such powerful emotions in this game as a whole that I didn't even think modern developers still had the capability to properly pull off in video games anymore, but CrossCode did not disappoint. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind game that I fully enjoyed and will most likely continue to enjoy again and again in the coming future

Thank you for your incredible work on this soundtrack!

    • @Zahaele
      @Zahaele ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not just complex for the sake of being complex, either- that's part of what I really enjoy about it. It's deliberately taking cues from 70s-era prog rock with these time signatures and heavy ELP-style synths. Like, you listen to this thing and then you listen to Tarkus and the similarities are clear.
      And why is that so neat? Because one of the most prolific JRPG composers, Motoi Sakuraba, HEAVILY draws inspiration from prog rock of that era and from ELP in particular (if you look at his solo work, it's REALLY clear). And they were clearly trying to grok that vibe for that phase 2 final boss theme. The influences are so clear, they are worn on their sleeve and they fuckin HIT IT and it's a fuckin banger.

    The Designer and Di'orbis are pretty similar in terms of design, both having a visor and a circle on their forehead, and how he keeps saying "...you prevailed!" is similar to the little speaches from the ancients after each temple. I like to think that him acting like a god wasn't because Gautham was mad with power, but because he wanted Lea to feel like she overcame a godlike challenge. Maybe the Creator was even Gautham's vision for what the final fight against Di'orbis would have been, since he left long before Ku'lero Temple was being made.
    I also like the contrast of beating a godlike being like the Creator by dealing billions of damage, only to be unable to save a normal guy from himself.

    at the start of this fight i wasn't too into the scenario as i didn't know enough about gautham to really know what his angle was. i knew his sanity had kinda slipped a bit but the more he went on about the ultimate experience the more i realised where he was coming from about thinking of himself as a god as the blue avatar like. you could argue humanity had pretty much reached low level godhood status as of crosscode. they already had the ability to summon, manipulate and destroy matter at will through instant matter and evotars meant they'd finally cracked intelligence and the ability to create an entirely new form of intelligent life.
    so like, from gautham's point of view, with all of this, he as someone with full access to all of this was a low level god. he could summon/manipulate/destroy matter at will and had a hand in the creation of a new form of life from scratch for the first time in the universe's known history, and the ultimate experience would be something that pushes even a god's creations to their limits - something that made full use of the ability to create anything he wanted from instant matter. the very pinnacle of everything a so-called god could create.
    and god what an experience it was.

    They both are crazy people who were abandoned on another planet by their coworker/boss (whether willingly or unwillingly)

      It's odd, I was getting this sort of feeling from Gautham and his Avatar persona as well. Not quite as _bloodthirsty_ for sure, but chasing a high that seemed unattainable after going through some truly unspeakable ordeals for someone else's gains; fascinated with this one quietly-determined person that was able to hold his attention; even going so far as to sabotage his superior's plans that would spell ruin for the protagonists because said plans were incompatible with his own lofty designs. This player went through _all this trouble_ to save their friends and allies; simply _killing_ the people they wanted to save after all this fighting just would not do! It's gotta be *DRAMATIC!*
      (even if the drama was undermined a wee bit by Gautham's last words, but it's in keeping with the setting at large, so I can't be too judgemental)

  • @eric-nicolasormerat2825
    @eric-nicolasormerat2825 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My favorite aspect of this final boss theme is that it doesn't sound at all like a battle theme, let alone like a final boss theme. This is even more striking because this theme remixes bits of "The Experience", which is arguably the most epic, dramatic, final-boss-worthy themes in the game.
    Once the solemn intro is over, all the "drama" vanishes and it becomes a kind of friendly dance, without any aggressiveness. Where "The Experience" climaxed into a triumphant orchestral blast, this one (3:33) climaxes into what feels like a child going on a holiday at the beach and just having fun playing.
    This is hardly a boss theme, but I think this is genius, because at this point in the game, the bad guy has been defeated and there's no more fuel for drama, not even the "virtual drama" of the Crossworlds questline. There's only Gautham's last taste of innocent fun. I guess this implicit dread is why some "drama" remains (2:50), but even then, it is never antagonistic drama.
    Thanks for such a well-tailored theme! It really made me feel just how happy this "fight" made Gautham.

It felt epic to me because, once the boss gave itself the hp buff, I could just imagine Lea and Sergei giving each other a nod knowing what they had to do. The final boss is supposed to be a culmination of everything the player has to learn and overcome in one big finale. New mechanics appearing for final boss fights usually interrupt this in a negative way because it ruins the flow the player is in.
