Fascinating interview. What I love about Don van Vliet is he sees the world differently than most everyone else. His observations are unique, his way of explaining the imbalance of nature, for example (the Hopi word is koyaanisqatsi). The way he talks about the world is just as unique as his music and lyrics. His poem that was recited about the desert was really profound.

I heard this show live when I was 15 in suburban Philly, I was a regular listener of Meatball Fulton on WXPN and this is why I've been a lifelong Beefheart fan.

dude... guy was into acid since the beat era. probably done speed as well since it was very popular before LSD took over in Cali.
For Frank Zappa, i might believe that he wasn't using anything, but Magic Band and him especially were heavy into it.

After the thirty-first "you know what I mean?" I wish someone would, Mark Lamarr-style, reply "I cannot stress how much I don't know what you mean".

He talked about "drugs being poison". But something tells me he made exceptions. He definitely smoked cigarettes at some point in his career. I'd be surprised if he never used psychedelics.

No, it's recently (2000's or so) come out that he used psychedelics, smoked pot and did cocaine/speed...all at various and/or different points in his career. Though by "rock & roll" standards, he was FAR from a "druggie."
