    I’d love a Don painting in my lounge.

    I grew up in the same desert town of Lancaster that Don grew up in, and first met him at a local garage band in the 60's back in those days. He would go to those when he had time to help them out in what ever way he could. A great guy that said it was to give something back to make a difference that he never had starting out. He enjoyed that, and we all appreciated it as well. Some of us more so later in the 70's and 80's. Don was one of a kind that's for sure. On one of the trips to Europe he came back from, he took me to a night club in Lancaster to see this new band that was from LA that was playing there. I said aren't you tired from the trip back? He said never too tired to go listen to a new band. That really was his life's work and what he was meant to do.

    To me, all of Don's art seems so in tune with nature yet so removed from life on earth.

      It's funny that Frank Zappa liked Stravinsky and Varese too. Big influences on his music I think.

    I saw Capt. Beefheart with the Mothers in 1975, i was 21 at the time! I was impressed , performance of " willy the pimp" was epic! An older friend put me on to his music , I still remember " clear spot " getting airplay on the radio when first released !

    It was very pleasing to hear him talk about that misogynistic side of Zappa. Captain seems very open-minded, as far I can see in his interviews and songs.

    Saw this tour in Bellingham WA. ... Fantastic show! "Hothead" & "Ashtray Heart" were standouts.
    J. Morris Tepper played great..
    Captain got a big laugh when he made a point of soaking his harp reeds with Perrier water! Wish someone would have filmed the show!

    It's interesting that he says "a fella named Drumbo", to a guy already versed in Beefheart band history - when asked about people who played on the album. Seems rather dismissive and impersonal, considering Trout Mask could never have happened without Drumbo transcribing and teaching all the music to the band, and leading endless rehearsals for most of a year. "a fella named..". Hmmm. Don definitely had a selfish and cold side, even though I'm in awe of his talent.

    Sucks that he's so oblivious to his own bullshit. He was no more of a composer than any of the musicians that worked with, and sadly had to deal with, him. And that bums me out, to see so much talent in one place (him and his band) being spearheaded by an untreated paranoid schizophrenic.

    • @quaid667
      @quaid667 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      He's a artistic genius. You don't have to like him as a person. Most artists are wankers. I know. I'm one of them lol.

    • @seanlincoln7923
      @seanlincoln7923 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@quaid667 If his art is genius to you then good for you, he just wasn't a composer in any sense of the word. Any actual musician that worked with him described his "compositions" as convoluted and hardly intelligible, and on top of that he would get pissed at you for not being able to work with his crazed scribbles on bar napkins. I got my degree in illustration, being an artist shouldn't romanticize being an asshole or projecting mental deficiencies onto others lol
