Ford New Holland LX865 Injection Pump Installation

- The topic of this video will be a basic rehash of the process we went through during disassembly to guarantee the timing sequence would be preserved. This is second engine I've been into within the last few years that had no timing marks on the injection pump drive gear.
We also rehash the issues created by the contaminated fuel and cover the steps to repair. By the end of the video, there will be the injector bleeding process and fresh starting of the 3 cylinder diesel. Note ** if you stop the video at the correct spot, as I am talking about placing #1 piston at TDC, note the timing mark on the actual timing gear...the farthest one on the right side of the video. Look closely and you'll see the mark at 3:00 and not at 9:00 which is where it should be IF the #1 cylinder was on the compression stroke like I said in the disassembly video. What this actually shows is we were 180 out with our thinking. LOL. But it does not matter in the least as long as the home made marks line up with the injection drive gear and the center drive gear that is driven off the crank and turns both the cam gear on the right and the injection pump gear on the left.
Now, if the engines internal components were inadvertently rotated AFTER marking and removing the pump, we would be in a world of hurt !! But to be sure, I removed the battery terminals to make sure all parts stayed in the exact position. Alignment of the pump gear to the home made marks went smooth and simple which is what we wanted to experience. #newhollandlx865timing, #pinninglucasinjectionpump, #contaminatedfuel - บันเทิง

Those jobs can get pretty involved.
Having to pull the end of the motor to get the pump off is a pain. Finding out that the shop had a way to solve a problem that you weren't aware of was nice but better to have known before.
One of the nicest things I have done for myself was to buy a complete rebuild book for the 1946 Ford truck that I restored. I had never rebuilt a flathead V8 and fortunately I didn't have to do a full rebuild. The book explained how and why things were the way they were and my friend and neighbor Bob Collins was a certified mechanic and drove flathead V& Fords as a young man. Lots of shortcuts on getting them running.
Thanks for the nice words my friend. I really don't know how they expect the pump to come off through a hole in the timing cover that's smaller than the gear but the two big things are that 1) there's no room for any puller I own and 2) the pump has two bolts that bolt into the pumps threaded flange from the front side BEHIND the gear !! I guess the guys that do it all the time have got to have a trick, but I don't know for sure. But if I'd known the details of 'pinning' the pump before, I wouldn't have had near the stress marking the parts in the correct position.
I've not done a V8 flathead either, but I've got my share of the four bangers under my belt. I've kicked myself a number of times for not having a full set of books for this one. All I have is the operators manual and it shows just enough to be on the left side of useless for anything other than where things are, what does what and maintenance schedules. LOL
@@tractorman4461 When you got the skid steer it was assembled and at least teady to run.
The 1946 was a ragged out 1 ton with a cobbled 3 ton axle and a tow hoist on the back.
When I went to buy a used doghouse the junkyard had a 2 ton straight truck without an engine for the same price. That's when I bought the book. Between those two and a 3rd donor truck from the Sherwood junkyardI was able to get it drivable after a year.
Then I began sheetmetal work.
With that done in another year I ended up moving and sold it. Rats!!!!
@@OldSneelock Hahahaha....that's the story of my life Dave. I should have sold what I kept and kept what I sold over the years. LOL Yeah, your project truck was a bit tougher than this one, but ya gotta admit the old stuff was just a bit easier to work on and not nearly as expensive if a mistake was made....not that you or I EVER made a mistake that is. LOL I, to this day, lament ever trading away a '58 Dodge one ton Power Wagon dually 4 wheel drive !! But I still have dad's '56 Ford F250 though...
@@tractorman4461 It was easy to work on. I had it in the big barn on blocks.
With the dog house and deck off i could stand inside the frame while I did the engine swap.
I didn't finish installing the 10 ton pto winch. By the time I found good rims and new tires to support the load of a tractor I had to sell.
The biggest issue was the aluminum pistons in the brake slave cylinders kept corroding. I think they used different brake fluid when it was built.
A local farmer bought iu t to drive in parades. That was all I ever did too. 😁😎

@@RCAFpolarexpress I'm shifting stuff around now to get the 430 closer to or actually inside the shed. Yes, my son has been working with me on tractors, mowers, motorcycles and go carts since he was old enough to carry a wrench across the shop. We try to make it fun all the time.

They usually don't fire up while bleeding the first injector...so it caught me a little by surprise !! I didn't even get to 2 and 3. LOL. No matter she's back in the saddle again and that's what matters. So our string of luck held out for one more I guess. This will be my summer project the video will be a huge help
Whatever you do, lock the pump in place and DO NOT rotate the crankshaft while the injection pump is off !! The shop will record the angle of the pump and when done will set it back exactly in that position. Literally ONE degree off will affect the engines operation. I’d suggest removing the battery to be sure. The timing cover will be very hard to dislodge from the block. If you crack it, it’s about 5 to 600 dollars for a new one.
Job well done....I did this job before and I know exactly how carful with the indexing one has to be.....for me, I was young and it took me a long time like six mounts before I got it close to time but it never was the same....well done.....CHEERS
Yes, they can be a real bugger !! One tooth one way or the other slightly advances or retards the explosion. And that ain't good. Too much power loss. I did a gas motor a few years ago that had a replacement timing gear with TWO marks that aligned with nothing when it should. With the engine partially reassembled, I went one tooth at a time until all the stars aligned....Bingo !! But it takes time to get it right. Thanks for stopping by today Gator.

I have the same problem getting my mitts into those tight spots. Better to disassemble things especially if you're not sure what's going on. Great job TM!!!

It’s been a whole week since I was at The Tough and Tumble. And of course I forgot my camera, Darn! I saw so many 44s it was unbelievable! Rows and rows of Massey Harris restored Lovely tractors and I was kicking myself in the buttox cuz I would have had tons of tractor porn to send your way! There were some huge and small tractors and some super restoration work. It was hot as usual and a huge flea market where I bought a hand forged scoorp with a ebony handle for $6. I’ve cleaned it up and the blade needs some more work. It hadn’t been sharpened for a long time. Of course all the huge steam machinery, giant tractors was a delight as always. And at noon everyone sounds off their steam whistles. I was there 5-6 hours and did meet up with some friends, got some good grub and I can’t believe it’s been an entire year. And just imagine, on Sept 17th it will be a year since I had surgery. I was working all day in the shop, in the yard and am about ready to go out and do a bit more before dark. I feel like me old self again so to celebrate all the 44 Adventure Vids, I’m gonna do some tippin and sippin your way for a final toast your way for this day. So tomorrow it will be drippin, tippin and sippin to the 44 Headquarters! And do give the proper Squeezes Pleases for the Missus! DaveyJO

Most manufacturers today build things so the regular DIY fellow can’t work on them or if they do, make it extremely difficult. Good repair job!
Well all I can say is if there were marking on ALL the components I think it'd be easier for a shade tree mechanic to make the repairs. LOL
You got it going tm44. Sounds just like a diesel. I keep telling the wife I need a skid steer but ain't making much headway. LoL. Their a handy, very handy machine.

That did look like a PITA, but glad you and son got her going again. Anything with a fel that does firewood needs to work, lol!!!

I wish I knew what the diesel mechanics know and they knew more !! I can't for the life of me see how they remove the gear with no room PLUS remove the pump with a couple of the mounting bolts installed into the threaded flange from the FRONT and not accessible until the gear is removed !! Then why does the factory install the pump drive gear with no timing mark ? I guess if I had the actual service manual I'd understand the reasoning. But we couldn't take a chance with the disassembly. Hahahaha....I wonder how much time it would take to program a machine to place a punch mark just one more time....LOL I think they don't like guys like us working on stuff. (-;
@@tractorman4461 You do know why those engines are designed that way, don't you? Those engines were designed by an Engineer who, came home early one day and found a 'Diesel Mechanic" in bed with His wife! :)

@@tractorman4461 Wendell, I heard that, waaay back in the mid 70's while I was Service Manager for a Heavy Equipment dealer, and we tried to do a favor for a farmer customer of ours by trying to repair the transmission on his Belarus farm tractor, ( not our equipment , as there was no servicing dealer around, we tried to help ) There was service port, about 6 inches square on the side of the transmission, through which we had to somehow extract a broken gear that was about 7 inches in diameter. One of our older/ more experienced mechanics told that one to the younger mechanic we had set to work on the tractor, when he said some thing like " How the @#XX^**& am I supposed to get that 'blankety blank' gear of here?"

Refinement was not in their playbook back then. I can only assume they've streamlined their amenities as well as their castings by now. I recently traded my own 3045 loader tractor for that International M grader-tractor.

Miles Diesel Injection Service in Jackson Mo. $550 including servicing the three injectors.
Sorry to bother hope you see this but what’s the part number on the blue tag of the pump itself should be top row of numbers to the right evidently mine is from a Perkins so it’s never run right
It’s a type 1262. 8922A181W I think that’s the serial number. Then 15031FRG I think thats the serial number. It’s. Lucas pump. Hope that helps. They ARE tricky and I couldn’t get a single dealer that wanted to help.
