I can't believe that after watching this video I picked up my guitar and composed my best riff so far. He surely has something that makes you pick up your guitar and start writing black metal riffs:D
thats a class riff at 1:17, that whole sound of sons of northern darkness. I dunno why but it blows my mind everytime. Its the tiny little almost incidental harmony bits that make it sound fucking class. Cant put it into words exactly.
the name of the song is 'Gloves of metal' and yes, the riffs are similar to some degree, but i definitely wouldnt recognize it if he hadnt tell. Anyway Gloves of metal can be found on Manowar's Into glory ride album and comes with really cult video with manowar guys dressed in loincloth beating up some cavemen and stealing their women - classic :)
for anyone who did not understood what was the inspiration of sons of northern darkness. It's Manowar - Gloves of metal. Check this out. I listened to this and then Sons of northern darkness become even more epic. Been listening to this song for like 1 year, now i want more.
I don't know black metal too much but this guy is great and has some serious chops! He plays what he was inspired to play and has no shame to say he just improves his solos. Could someone recommend bands and/or music
I'm also a singer/guitarist, and singing while playing actually gives you more confidence! I play less mistakes whe nsinging cuz it feels more natural then, otherwise I'm paying attention to what I'm playing and then I make mistakes, weird but true :)
Holy Shit i never realized how similar the riff is to Manowar's Gloves of Metal till he said that shit. It'd be cool if Manowar and Immortal toured together again.
@KevinCarey No, they're triads, in this case minor triads. A normal power chord is just the root and the fifth, lacking a third so it's neither major nor minor. If you add a third, it becomes a triad (assuming you're only fingering 3 strings and don't have an octave root/fifth like in a bar chord). If the third you add is flat, you now have a minor triad, the perfect chord for Black Metal.
Ich habe das video oft an der rechten seite gesehn und als ich es dann anklickte dachte ich durch den sound sofort an immortal und bei spätestens bei der 28. sekunde war es klar dass es der sänger/gitarrist von immortal ist:D:D:D
ABBATH U R SO AWESOME. PLEASE DO MORE AND MORE ALBUMS OF IMMMORTAL. IT S THE BEST BLACM METAL BAND EVER. PLEASE DONT STOP IMMMORTAL GO AHEAD WITH MUSIC
I dont think Mercyful Fate or KD could be considered black metal, but it was a definite influence on second wave black metal bands including mayhem, both lyric wise, and imagery wise.
as a self tought guitarist it is funny to see that he is still in kind of that position .... when he plays things slowly ^^ when his tongue sticks out to concentrate ^^
i wish he would show more lessons because he can play any instrument he did an album by himself i think he could play bass, guitar, and drums he should put lessons for all of those
@deicidalmaniac I just figured it out by myself i think. As for me it's |D -----7--- |G -----9--- |C ----10--- Or 8 at G, i may be wrong cause i just don't have my guitar in sight right now but as for me this one sounds exactly like this one which he is playing.
I don't understand.Had really start to listen no-metall music last months, but atnothernway( :) ),start to listen little by little Immortal.Band from uknown to me.And i like more.Everyday.
Guitar looks like BC Rich Jr V, with the standerd pick ups that come with the guitar. It actually sounds better then mine and i paid 200 bucks for better pick ups.
did he say Sons of Northern Darkness is based on manowar's kings of metal (we'll he says lords of metal, same thing) ? I don't really see the resemblance
He writes some of the coolest riffs I've ever heard.
This is truly the most blackmetal set of guitar "lessons" ever!
I hope this comes to cable.
Mind blowing Riffs,Abbath is one of my biggest inspiration,
oh lord after watching these guitar lessons i blasted some good old immortal. Such a great band if you can appreciate their strangeness.
I can't believe that after watching this video I picked up my guitar and composed my best riff so far. He surely has something that makes you pick up your guitar and start writing black metal riffs:D

i love the black metal chords so dark and evil sounding.
I love the power cords in this song, they shake my car on full blast
i love it
cheers
Hahaha! "Someone will figure it out!" Abbath must be one of the coolest metal dudes out there!
@deathreigning The guy was originally a bassist in Immortal. I think its pretty amazing how much he can do with the guitar.
the name of the song is 'Gloves of metal' and yes, the riffs are similar to some degree, but i definitely wouldnt recognize it if he hadnt tell. Anyway Gloves of metal can be found on Manowar's Into glory ride album and comes with really cult video with manowar guys dressed in loincloth beating up some cavemen and stealing their women - classic :)
Best cover so far on youtube. Little sloppy though.
You're kidding, right?)
52 yrs old. Recently discovered black metal and Immortal. Wow. Virginia Beach to Pittsburgh. Gotta get there. This guy Blows.
It's amazing how different he looks without the make up on
This man has more character and charisma than any other person on the planet.
I love all those frigging chords he makes up, it sounds like two guitars
Abbath is one of my main inspirations in writing music
The reason i respect Immortal so much is due the original guitar riffs...i mean, you can hear it is immortal, the sound is like no others.
Wrost and best teacher at the same time

This Riff is so sick...
I don't know black metal too much but this guy is great and has some serious chops!

Could someone recommend bands and/or music
This guy is such a hero! All stars :)
Hey Abbath! if you ever come to Sheffield (UK), let's go round the pubs. Drinks are on me!
i love his sound..
i think its extremely good for his own progress to finally play it slow
its completely different and cool too
Same, his voice is awesome anyway. :)
I prefer to learn this way, by watching the person playing. Feels more interactive to me.
I'm also a singer/guitarist, and singing while playing actually gives you more confidence! I play less mistakes whe nsinging cuz it feels more natural then, otherwise I'm paying attention to what I'm playing and then I make mistakes, weird but true :)
when he starts singing, i start singing aswell! lol Abbath and Immortal kick ass!!!
Holy Shit i never realized how similar the riff is to Manowar's Gloves of Metal till he said that shit. It'd be cool if Manowar and Immortal toured together again.
His riffing technique is a thing of beauty.
The whole black metal tutorial! fast riffage and grim vocals!
i love the guitar sound.
i love his face when he's playing, immortal ist krieg
that first grunt at 0:30 is so priceless!
Love it!! man, abbath seems like a cool guy!!!!

I'm starting to enjoy this stuff.
his voice is so freaking awsome

@MrNonoz to be more precise it's ESP LTD old Dave Mustaine Signature. It's the same as LTD V-300, just needs Seymour Duncan pickups.
ABBATH U R SO AWESOME. PLEASE DO MORE AND MORE ALBUMS OF IMMMORTAL. IT S THE BEST BLACM METAL BAND EVER. PLEASE DONT STOP IMMMORTAL GO AHEAD WITH MUSIC
@intrepgun Mmmmm no Its more surprising how he comes up with these complex riffs with the guitar being a Bassist for who knows how long. :3
I dont think Mercyful Fate or KD could be considered black metal, but it was a definite influence on second wave black metal bands including mayhem, both lyric wise, and imagery wise.
bands called "I" and Immortal r both his bands... both excellent!
He looks to be very sympathic and he is a gor for me
@alexthiong Sons of Northern Darkness from the album of the same name. Enjoy.
he play bass, drum , guitar,,, hes a god of metal.. that all
ive been bamboozled!
hahah this guy is awesome. He sucks at guitar when he tries too hard, but when he just messes around and sings he's tight and sounds good.
my heart would melt with joy if he wore a corpse paint in this video LMAO
awesome, abbath rocks!!
hehe yes his tongue ^^
he is just one who bring me to the Black Metal !
\m/ love him
Hell yeah Abbath likes Manowar!
@Caisamo That's why he makes that sound. "Aaaarrrrrgh" :o)
Abbath is Great!!!

kick ass riffs
haha this guy is awesome, HAIL IMMORTAL
He says "Gloves of Metal" by Manowar. Compare the opening riffs and you'll see the similarity.
DAT EXOTIC SCALE :3
@mickmetallico watch Abbath Guitar Lesson (pt.1) and listen what he sad at 0:30 - 0:40
An immortal one!
Gloves of metal as abbath said
1.29 to 1.32 - Øhh, lol! Great Abbath! :D
its best guitar of world
@angel2hell yup correct. Now I'm completely sure.
and, in part, what technique you begin with.
I love how he has to sing
"I'm lucky to hit the notes"
@Haddockxyz300 fuck ya man whenever I pick up a guitar I always end up putting a lil bit of his style in my playing.
2:22 !! XD
Abbath fucking rules!!! hail Immortal!!

amen to that
Something very Megadethish about that guitar tone! :-D
It had a lot to do with King Diamond, I think he was the first.
"big sun glasses, cool band"
fenriz
:))
If you could play even half of the stuff he plays I'd be amazed...
I want his picking hand.
Guitar looks like BC Rich Jr V, with the standerd pick ups that come with the guitar. It actually sounds better then mine and i paid 200 bucks for better pick ups.
@GanjikaAranyaka Standard D.
WOW!!! Thumbed down because of this? People are sick sometimes... I'm sure Abbath himself would laugh. ABBATH RULES F'CKERS!!!
ABBATH FOR PRESIDENT!
I'm going to forget that he ever said anything about manowar. Jesus.
Nope, but I cant wait
