- A look back at the career of Bill Shankly, who took over at Liverpool in 1959 when they were in the second tier of English football and went on to guide them to three top-flight titles, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup during his reign at the club.
I have drummed it into our players time and again that they are privileged to play for you . And if they didn't believe me , they believe me now !!!
Even though shankley was before my time. Shankley knew stuff that most people in football will never know.
Plenty of people think they know things, but a minority of people like shankley understands things.
There is a big difference.
You have to admire, how well he understood the symbiotic relationship, between fans and players. Something most in football are not intelligent to understand, but they think they know.
Liverpool would never of been liverpool, without either the kop, or bill shankley coming along, and understanding what he understood.
Liverpools kop became the most famous football stand in world football, due to shankley seeing that potential, and how it would help him make that team.
Very few people understand the symbiotic relationship, between real fans, and football teams. Its great in europe we see this.
While in america, they have no real club in sports like liverpool, or celtic, whom use there fans potential to the limit. Americans sports are devoid of these things, as fans in america, are just ways for teams to bring in money.
Its very noticeable, that no american sport has anything like liverpools kop. It shows, the lack of people like bill shankley in american sports, to exploit those potentials.
Yep, people view and understand sports in many ways.
Very few, have turned a rubbish team, into one of the worlds most famous teams. It shows how very astute he was, at understanding how sports work, and there relationship with there fans.

Shankly started the fire, amazing guy, manager and motivator. From a time when the supporters were the most important thing in the game. Watching the young kids look of disbelief at Shankly retirement announcement took myself back, I couldn’t believe it at the time, and couldn’t bear it either. The worst football decision he ever made.
I don’t understand why he didn’t become a pundit after his retirement he could’ve been the greatest ever and he still would’ve been involved with football
