I met Claire Monahan while teaching fire effects monitoring on prescribed burns on the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve, where she is employed as a Land Steward. Since then she has been getting a lot of experience using fire for land management. We met up in Bidwell Park to talk about her experience as a student of fire, about alternative pathways to leadership in fire management, and ideas on helping the public-at-large become more comfortable with fire as a land management tool.
This video is part of our ongoing reporting on a re-emergence of prescribed burning for land management in Butte County, Northern California.
Thanks for sharing this story and we definitely need more people like Claire using fire to effectively reduce fuels.
You are doing a great job. Keep it up. Your channel is the start of education and acceptance to doing this stuff.
This was great education for the general public and hope this type of message gains lots of traffic. Thank you and great job to you both!
I loved the interview. Great job to bring idea of prescribed burning to the public.
Love your videos, thank you
great video, Zeke, really liked the reaffirmation towards the end from both of you on the alternate paths to a professional skill and getting the respect from those who exist in the more 'traditional path' realm.
Glad to see this work happening. Hopefully the public support and then political will falls into place.
Evening Zeke. Really enjoy watching these operations. I so love seeing these grad students eagerly embracing putting fire on the ground. Learning and teaching. And Journaling. Wonderful. Powerful. What commitment and viability.👍 Thanks for sharing. 😚🐈🐈🐈⬛💜💕
Clair gives me hope that Forest and fire management is starting to change, I hope she is given the opportunity to help change the system.
As a local government helicopter manager working for Cal Fire and USFS fires, I have gotten to see the different suppression strategies. We all wear "yellow".
Paradigm changing! 3 Bic lighters & an ATV!
