    The Berlin garrison tanks did indeed all share the exact same camo pattern as far as I know. This was done to keep the Warzaw Pact intelligence unsure how many tanks they had serviceable and where they were. Nice build BTW.

    Absolutely stunning Greg. I felt your pain with all that masking and began to feel guilty for suggesting this scheme in the first place!!........but as always you haven't let us down. Awesome work mate, you continue to inspire the rest of us. Looking forward to the next item to hit your bench.

    Nice build.
    What kind of glue are you using to when connecting painted parts? The Tamiya thin I use just takes the paint off. I end up resorting to CA glue but I'm hoping there is something better.

    • @GregsModels
      @GregsModels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PVA glue is good at holding painted parts, providing they aren't supporting weight. Tamiya glue, with the white label, is also good at holding painted parts, but it is quite gloopy. The best practice is to clear the area of paint, not always easy.

    That’s a lovely piece of work Greg, that oil drybrusing transformed it and is far less harsher that acrylic or enamel. You have made this old Chieftain Gunner a very happy man....👍

      Thanks Steve, two mistakes on the paint job which I could have corrected but too lazy. The running gear should have been painted black and I think the engine area should have been the bronze colour rather than green, never mind worse things happen at sea.

I'll be doing this camo myself good idea with the scanning and blowing up for masks! Turned out really smart mate! You don't remember the actual numbers you blew it up to for 1.35 by any chance mate?

    • @GregsModels
      @GregsModels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, sorry, I think I measured the side height of the skirt of the kit. Then the scanned image was just increased by increments of one per cent until it meet that measurement.

    Do you seal the model after dry rushing oils? I'm wondering as you use an oil wash afterwards

    • @GregsModels
      @GregsModels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would leave the oils to dry for a few days before applying a wash. I try and keep the number of varnish coats down to a minimum on a model.

    • @davehopkin9502
      @davehopkin9502 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they were, the vehicles stayed in Berlin and were handed on to the next unit coming into Berlin Brigade, the paint job was applied by REME in workshops
      Next time you do a tank with rubber track pads you might want to take a few chunks out of the rubber, they always looks like that after a couple of miles as they went over rocks etc
      But it looks bloody good to me

    One other tiny detail the reel on the turret roof was for D10 cable, which allowed tanks to connect to each other and talk when in radio silence, usually there would have been a lenght of D10 two wire on the reel

      This tank belongs to the 'Berlin Brigade' and as such would have fought the Warsaw Pact in built up areas, the camo was designed to blend into typical urban colours, not to hide it.
      It's probably impossible to hide a 55 ton tank in a city centre but it was hoped the camo would confuse an enemy gunner for a fraction of a second.

    Good job. I've built several all mk 10 and 11s. 2 things. The canvas cover fits like crap whether you put it in following directions or after like you did. It's an awful fitting piece. If you do another, don't put any track pads on the track on the ground. It actually adds a look of weight to the tank. I learned that from a British buddy of mine. I tried it and I'm definitely going that route time.

    • @GregsModels

      Thanks, rubber pads are just fixed on with PVA glue so should be easy to peel off.

    Greg do you use a sealer or clear cote to lock in the pastels (like on the rubber of the wheels) and if so what do you use? Great work - after watching several of your builds today I finally got the mojo back after months of no will to build anything. So I sincerely want to thank you for giving me the inspiration I was missing and needed!

    • @GregsModels
      @GregsModels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sometimes seal oils in with a varnish, Tamiya's semi gloss, but not pastels, being the very last thing I add. I think the varnish, which is always a very thin mix, may spoil the subtle effects. I might have to experiment just to see 👍

      Yes, cheapest £50 on Amazon. If you ever get to build this kit and paint the Berlin scheme, the lower body, including the running gear, should all be black. Also, I think the engine area should be the bronze colour, not green as I have it.

    As an old Chieftain crewman really nice model...one thing wing mirrors were never fitted. This camo was only used in Berlin, they never went on exercise if the tracks were that rusty, someone would be for the high jump lol

    • @andyc3088
      @andyc3088 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GregsModels before going on exercise we used to paint the tank, on return from exercise wash it down, any chips to the paint work was covered in red lead paint, and then paint it using camouflaged (it was named that) paint black and green. We used to paint the tanks with 4 inch brushes not once did we use a spray gun it was always by brush, there was not set pattern to were black went or green so long as all areas were painted. Inside the vehicle was painted silver.

    • @GregsModels
      @GregsModels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyc3088 I wonder why silver inside and not white?

    • @andyc3088
      @andyc3088 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GregsModels I believe it was due to silver reflexing light better? Around the turret and drivers compartment were a number of single bulb lights with a rotatory dimmer switch. The turret plates, ammo stowage and loader safety rail were silver. Silver paint was used on the bare turret sides, otherwise there was light buff coloured padding. All vehicles on exercise, would carry rolls of black or light brown hessian, front, rear and both sides, so that when they were dropped it would break up the shape of the vehicle. Also on Chieftains had a cut down camo net covering the turret.
