Different times (1932). 1930s Germany was car/racing crazy. Much due to certain political "circumstances". Motor racing was one of the best showcases of technology.
Well finally someone has put forth a complete track layout video / history. Was there 1964- 1967. Raced Ducati's 250's there in 65 , 66. Used to camp outside the final r/h turn in the trees, as there wasn't any grandstand build then. Great track then.
The old Dreieickskurs actually still exists. The part to the Spitzkehre in Oftersheim is still a public road like it was back in the thirties and the part that leads from Oftersheim to Hockenheim is a road through the Hardtwald (the forest). It is a paved road where you can ride a bicycle or walk, cars are not allowed. The roads around the Stadtkurve in Hockenheim also still exist. They are also public roads now and at the Stadtkurve is now a building of the Hockenheim Fire Department.

that final transition shot from the f1 cars blasting down the Hockenheimring to a lone Mercedes cruising down the original Hockenheim circuit gives me chills lmao
This is one of your best videos. Outstanding homage to the once formidable Hockenheimring. Fun fact, I originally tried building the 1932 and 1938 layouts for Rfactor in about 2009 but ultimately abandoned the projects for various reasons. I once again tried to revive the project in 2011 adding a 1980s proposed layout that added more significant corners at the various forest chicanes, but again this was abandoned due to work commitments of the time. I hope someone revives these old layouts for Rfactor 2 as that software became too complicated to build tracks for my humble skills. I'm glad that my Imola, Attia Stadt and other tracks live on these days though.
Let's get this man some subs. The historic value alone is enough for this channel to thrive. The racing is very entertaining as well. Let's get him out there guys!!!
Great vid. I am glad to have witnessed several F1 races as spectator at the high speed straights. It was magic experience the V10 and V12 there. My first visit was back in 95 where Michael Schumacher won in the Benetton. The sound of these cars and the pure speed was pure passion. Was disappointed that they destroyed the old circuit. What a shame.
I am jealous beyond belief! it must have been insane! As a child of the '80s, I grew up watching Formula 1 throughout the '90s and into the early '00s, Monza and Hockenheim used to be my favorite races to watch! it annoyed the hell outta me when they announced that they would be resizing Hockenheim for the '02 season :(
Well done Jake! I suggest you to make more of this perhaps a dedicated playlist of old our forgotten circuits. History is to be remembered regardless the subject. Cheers! 🇵🇹👍
Can't agree more! Love tracks like the old AVUS track, that one insanely long Italian circuit and other obscure early 20th century tracks. I think using custom track files on a racing game to show these tracks is perfectly acceptable, since there's hardly any other way to show how these tracks were.
Fantastic job! I am reliving sitting in the stands high above the first turn in the early 80’s, watching the cars roar off into the distance, a packed stadium waiting excitedly who would be leading on their thunderous return each lap.
You are the first guy to make me let the ads run through since the beginning of youtube. Hope you will soon get the attention you deserve,. To me you are the best and most stylish entertainer in virtual racing, Jake.

I think the original Ostkurve(used up until 1982) was a very challenging corner. I always fond of the old Hockenheim circuit, in the refuelling era, as it actually encouraging racing ontrack - rather than overtaking someone in pitstops. You had to set the car up on a compromise.
After binge-playing Call of Duty 1 and 3, I feel a strange nostalgia towards anything 30s and 40s, so I definitely feel the same. I think the music he put in the background complimented the visuals perfectly!
I used to call the old Spa circuit "the belgian roulette", with reference to the russian roulette, but this one was no better... With those cars (and motorbikes), on those bumpy roads, at those speeds and so close to thousands of trees! Thanks for sharing this piece of history, it's amazing 👍🏻
Variety is the spice of life, and Hockenheim was a great contrast to the other tracks back in the day. It wasn't just Hockenheim that didn't have passing, no one could pass anywhere.
Formula 1 is not purely about passing, it's also about the craziness of driving the fastest and most overengineered cars on the absolute limit. No track encompassed this better than Hockenheim, apart from maybe Monaco, the Nordschleife and Spa.
There was still a good slip-streaming battle once in while until the very late 1990's & early 2000's. But the cars were becoming so far advanced that those occasions basically faded away. One of my favorite races to watch aside from the 1969 and 1971 Monza races, is the 1970 Hockenheim race with Rindt and Ickx duking it out. Good audio too with natural sounds.
I went there in 1992 for the Grand Prix. Out at the first (Jim Clark) chicane, a long walk through the forests, my girlfriend and I sat waiting for the fist cars in Saturday practice (no sixty minute qually then) All was still, not a breath of wind disturbing the trees. Then suddenly this unearthly howl, getting louder and louder..all of a sudden the leaves shook as this red and white shape burst into view, it shook and got sqirrelly braking for the chicane. Flick right, flick left then right again. You could feel the sound vibrating in your chest. A yellow crash helmet bouncing against the headrest as the driver changed up, up, up and hurtled off to Ostkurve, engine still screaming when way out of sight. We just gazed at each other speechless. That was Senna, and we saw him at Hockenheim. Thats why I will always remember it.

I went to Hockenheim for first round of 2019 DTM season and I walked on great part of the original circuit! The first day the part inside the town, the second day I arrived to the circuit through the forest using the third original straight, then before leaving I made a tour on the 1968-2001 circuit. It was fascinating while visiting the original layout, very sad visiting the newer one, also because I used to loved it when F1 used to race on it...
As I write this comment im exactly at the old pits from 1932-1966 and exploring the old tarmac retaken by nature and cut off from the ring due to the Autobahn. It's must have been awesome to race the "Dreieckskurs" ! Thanks for making me visual it in a fast manner and not with all the nature and the house of the hockenheimers !

i was at hockenheim back in 2019 and the trees at the old layout where a bit leaning forward the direction the cars came out of the forest, wich made it look like the cars passing by at these intense speeds made the trees grow that way
The long circuit on the 86/88 f1 season mod on r factor 2 wrestling the 80s era car with a manual 5 speed gear box it heaven. Those I never knew the triangle or 38 era tracks were original layouts
God the old Hockenheim was good. F1, F2, and F3, as well as 500cc Grand Prix and WSBK... All had great races, all close, all awesome to watch. All sadly no longer possible. :(

F1 at the old track was just waiting to see how many cars would remain at the end of full race distance . I liked the track to drive it flat out took some skill while not blowing your engine apart. I mean at the end of the day they had to return the track to the woods that was the agreement for the use of the Forest section I understand. the new track is not bad but it is a long way from the classic layout. nice to see the original layout thanks.

Why everyone hates the modern Hockenheim circuit? It is a nice racetrack with opportunities for action and overtaking. Of course it is not the circuit through the forest but it is also good and way better than many tracks where overtaking is nearly impossible and you see just a long train of cars.
Different circuits provide different challenges to overcome and Hockenheim's attributes required cars capable of reaching and maintaining maximum speed, which require men with the guts and skill to drive them... of which I have participated in several times myself (simulated).
During your research, did you find any mentions of the Ostkurve being tightened between it being build and the time they build the second chicane in? I ask because in most overhead pictures of the corner I've seen, there are two bands of tarmac running in parallel through the section.
