In 1997 I met the former owner of this truck in Windhoek / Namibia. I invited him to stay on my premises for a couple of days and he mentioned his sensitive situation about his health. At that time this Mercedes 1113 towed a trailer with a Suzuki Jeep (-?-) on it. That small car enabled him to be more flexible in the cities. Years later I heard that he managed to travel in America, …but that he sadly passed away. By a chance I discovered this video, what a nice and emotional recall! Thanks, Oskar, and regards from Namibia!

My Father was born 1933 South Africa, when I was born in 86 he was a carting all sorts of building materials with his 1133 Mercedes benz Daimler chrysler straight 6! He loved it and drove it till he passed! What an awsome video so much nostalgia.

Crazy how the Germans made do with SO LITTLE POWER in their fire apparatus. Here in North America fire engines have always been super, super-powerful--2-stroke high-speed V12s back in the day, or even big gassers like Hall-Scotts here and there. And yet, the Germans still put out plenty of fires using 130ish HP Mercedes trucks. Very cool to see the differences, and what a great conversion this thing is. Thanks for sharing and thanks Peter!

This is not a ex Military vehicle it was a former Firefighter vehicle. Same as my project. Thanks for commenting.

The "off road" shifter is a high/low shifter. Cruise control/PTO works when in park or driving to operate hydraulics, ie, pumps, blowers etc.

pretty cool to see a like minded builder in another country. i built nearly the same thing from a US 1966 deuce and a half 6x6. so similar in amenities and reasons for doing it one way or another.

Like I said in an other comment it is an very interesting topic, the aluminum ones are rather rare most common are the steel ones and have been left behind after WW2 a lot and farmers build fences from it thank you for letting us know.

@@oscaroverlander_MB1222AF : I recall my old elementary school here in the Philippines having a fence made almost entirely of Marston mats. It doesn't rust easily due to the manganese content in the metal. And, yeah, they still are intact today!

You can use triple filter to reuse your water from showers you take and its good for 30 times before you need to change the water with new water

In Indonesia these trucks were used to transport cargo between cities, before the Trans-Java Toll Road was constructed I would see these trucks all along the intercity roads on my way back to my hometown. They were used so much that most of them looked like it was about to fall apart with questionable extended frames, thick black smoke coming from the exhaust, and little to no working headlights or taillights. Now these are too old and they're replaced with newer trucks.

Really sad about his passing away. Was amazed to see front freewheeling manual locking hubs on such a big vehicle..concern for fuel mileage and drag on the front axle??
