Following the launch of the Battlefront Classic Collection, I’ve found myself in quite the Star Wars mood. To my surprise, we’ve never spoken about one of my favorite ever Star Wars games by a developer who I find criminally underrated. Join me, as we go back to Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and explore one of the best bits of lightsaber combat a Star Wars game has ever seen!

I think Fallen Order and Survivor nail certain aspects the Jedi Knight games lack and vice versa. There are days in which I prefer the parry system and cinematic feel of the combo chains in Respawn's games, and others where it's just super satisfying to kill another lightsaber wielder with one good strike in a Jedi Outcast/Academy duel.

    • @Dass_Jennir
      @Dass_Jennir 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

@@paradox4780 I understand where you are coming from, as it took me many playthroughs to grasp the combat, but there's more to it than that.
Understanding when to use the stances, timing attacks, performing proper footwork and keeping distance are part of the process which make duels in these games quite nuanced.
I played Academy and Outcast for the first time only a few years ago, so there's no nostalgia tainting my reasoning, although I agree it's not the ultimate and perfect lightsaber combat system to end them all.

Tying combat to which movement key you pressed is messy as fuck. I only got into Jedi academy / outcast this month (specifically cause of the movie duels mod) and the combat is JANK. You have to be insanely accurate with timing strikes in hope of landing a hit. And against groups of 2-3 Jedi you’re gonna be getting knocked down before the animation finishes. Only way to play through the mod is to spam random attacks and force healing and pray you don’t get cut in half

imagine a Jedi Academy reboot in 2024 like this:
    1. A more stylish HUD, with vertical and horizontal bars.
    2. Being able to cling to wall edges.
    3. New equipment such as Force-imbued armor and a grappling hook.
    4. Manual blocking of both ranged and melee attacks.
    5. Dash and a more controllable super speed.
    6. A passive Force sense in the form of a minimap.
    7. Being able to deflect blaster shots only if you press the block at just the right moment.
    8. Greater ability to confront non-Force user shooters even if they carry heavy weapons.
    9. Stealth in the form of stealth-oriented Force powers and a lightsaber that emits no light or sound when active. Recommended when greatly outnumbered, but useless against Force user enemies.
    10. Remove Force protection and replace it with imbued armor, and remove Force absorption and replace it with QTE when attacked with offensive Force powers.

Highly recommend the Movie Duels 2 mod, adds nearly every character from every movie and series and maps and single player campaign for all movies, plus much upgraded saber combat and a really nice graphic update for both Outcast and Academy.

I met the guy who actually was the one who designed the lightsaber combat for Jedi outcast and academy
I was literally telling my friend at work about how good it was and he comes and is like “yeah I agree it’s a good game but I’ll admit I’m biased since I helped make it!”

This was my very first Star Wars game, and also the only Star Wars game I had for quite a long time. Combined with the fact that I was huge into Star Wars as a kid, you can imagine how much time I spent on it. It was only years later that I also got Battlefront and KOTOR, which eventually became my favorites and I haven't played Academy too much anymore after that, but I just might soon enough.

A friendly tip: Jedi Academy is an old game - it's better played with OpenJK mod ;-)
    Their goals:
    * Improve the stability of the engine by fixing bugs and improving performance.
    * Support more hardware (x86_64, Arm, Apple Silicon) and software platforms (Linux, macOS)
    * Provide a clean base from which new code modifications can be made.

To this day... this game, flaws and all, is a pinnacle of the Star Wars experience that I desired sooo badly as a kid. I'd read Jedi Academy and New Jedi Order books and wanted so badly for a game where you were learning new Force powers and being trained as a Jedi in Luke's academy. When KotOR came out, I used to replay the Dantooine section in the Jedi Enclave over and over again for the same reason. And when this game came out, I was blown away. I still replay this game at least once every couple years.

Why hasn't anyone tried to replicate this kind of combat system? Being able to change walking direction while striking and having the strike direction be dependend on your movement with 7 different directions times three for three different saber stances with different strike patterns and velocity etc plus being to jump and attack and combo hits is THE MOST dynamic and flexible melee saber combat system that exists. The only games that tried are somewhat Chivalry and Mordhau but these are so SLOW and janky, not acrobatic at all...
When Fallen Order was announced I somewhat hoped they will go in this direction but decided to go for Press A for Light and B for Heavy attacks and a handful of combos... And the soulslike parry of course.

Yeah honestly for me they're among the best SW games at making you FEEL like a jedi as I found it so refreshing playing them for the first time for the past year in that the lightsabers in them ACTUALLY feel like the lightsabers from the movies instead of them being glorified baseball bats that you see in like Force Unleashed and such Dark Forces 2 is my favorite of the series but I still need to finish jedi academy to really rank the series for me
