Thanks for all these videos, Coach D! I am a first year coach for a 5th/6th 6v6 team. Our league is only allowed to practice one day per week, so we only had three practices before our first game (coming up tomorrow!) and we had a lot of new players. Here's what I managed to teach them: How to line up in ONE offensive formation. How to line up in ONE defensive formation. How to hand off the ball. How to throw a few short passes (nothing over 7 yards.) Ideas that worked for us: Coach D's "walk the zone" drills. Coach D's advice on how the QB should hand off the ball. The wristbands. We only have four plays on our wrist band, all out of that one formation, and all highly simplified. I just wanted to share our experience. The kids are having a great time and we're all looking forward to our first game. It's going to be chaos out there, haha.
I love this comment so much. This is real life out there and you’re stepping in to impact the lives of those kids in ways they will NEVER forget. That’s special. Because on top of those tactical football lessons, you’re teaching them life lessons of sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, grit, and preparing when you have NO IDEA what to expect. You’re stepping and leading into the unknown and I give you much respect for that “Coach!” Keep leading, keep learning, and you’ll keep inspiring. Thx for this. 🏈🔥
Thank you for this video, I am going to Coach flag football for the first time this month and I’m very excited. This video was very to the point and educational. I will definitely be using a lot of your terminology and tactics with my young team! Thanks again.
How has it been going for you, Coach? Love it when a new coach leans in and steps on the field. Let me know if I can help with anything: linktr.ee/flagfootballwithcoachd
Fantastic! Love it. Thx for stepping in to coach. If I can help in any way, let me know. Check the description for a ton of resources for new coaches! This is my fav: flagfootballwithcoachd.com/products/new-coach-bundle-plays-and-equipment
I am so greatful to find your channel. No one vollenteered to coach flag this year in my town. Even though my son has moved up to micros i hated to hear that there was going to be no flag team this year due to them having no one to coach... so I vollenteered. The problem is I'm a 37 year old woman who only knows enough about the game to cheer for my son. 😅 I can use all the help I can get to teach a bunch of five year Olds how to play a game I know nothing about
Thx for stepping up. You’re not alone for sure. I have a new coach bundle if you need plays, practices, drills, and wristbands. You can find a few options for new coaches here: linktr.ee/flagfootballwithcoachd Thx again!
Totally. Go to my playlists and you’ll see the drills for each skill. Plus you can grab my practice schedules that have drills specific to each age over an 8 week season. It also comes with Drill Packs. Check it out here: flagfootballwithcoachd.com/products/coach-ds-complete-coach-package-playbooks-drill-packs
Yep - tons of basic skills you can master with my short videos. Go to my playlists and start working on key skills like flag pulling, cutting, catching, etc. I’ve got you covered! Thx for playing out there.
What football cleats do you recommend for the 5th grade age? Around here its impossible to find a good store with professionals to help you choose (only for soccer cleats).
Football cleats - high tops are my preference. Like these: flagfootballwithcoachd.com/products/under-armour-boys-spotlight-franchise-rm-jr-football-shoe-black-001-white-6?_pos=2&_sid=eb970d2e8&_ss=r
flagfootballwithcoachd.com/products/nike-kids-alpha-menace-shark-bg-football-cleats-4-5-m-us-big-kid-black-white-metallic-silver?_pos=1&_sid=eb970d2e8&_ss=r Both are sold out but this will give you a good idea.
Yeah, I try to do a fair rotation schedule to allow for all players to play especially at the younger age. At about 4th grade I start to put them in specific positions to really start developing their skills in specific areas. I get it though.
Hopefully you found some. I’ve been looking myself. I’m going to be launching a Bootcamp in a Box in about a month and it will come with 10 pop out flags like this…stay tuned.
Hello, I’ve tried teaching the players this they still don’t do it. I don’t know how to coach them this, but we got into the playoffs yesterday and lost in the whole team. There was no energy it’s like they just gave up so it was a bad ending.
Reaching playoffs does look successful to me. It's just a matter of perspective. I understand that as a coach, you take each loss personally. Ultimately, think about your job as a coach. As coach D puts it. It is about sportsmanship and leadership. You are the role model for these principles. You lose a game - buckle up and go to work. You can always evaluate your practice according to the drills and concepts in this video. Remember though, sometimes the opposition works hard as well. Just be positive to your kids about every little success. Hang in there .
@@florianseibert6438 I get it the last game we had the energy the kids wanted to play but then the game yesterday they all did not wanna be there and throughout the whole season have to players didn’t show up to practices or games and not practicing you can’t expect to do better and play games my son plays the quarterback, but I told him that they all need to play as a team and that’s what they’re lacking on but I’m gonna be signing him up for tackle football this summer to get him some one on one coaching with veteran coaches
@@florianseibert6438 I wouldn’t say it took it personal but for us to just make it in the playoffs and then just give up right in the beginning of the game in the whole game. It was just very hard to watch and me and the other coach said the same thing.
This is tough. I’ve had a few seasons like this where either players don’t show or they lose steam or they just don’t care anymore. It happens and it’s part of coach flag football. I’ve also had seasons where everyone was all in each week and we dominated. I put in the same love, dedication, energy, no matter what our season looks like, how many kids show, etc. Is that easy - absolutely not. Do I want to call each parent and…you get it. In this game, we do what we can to be prepared, care, adjust, create a game plan and rotation that brings out the best in our players. At the end of a loss and even a loss like that (had a few for sure). I still go around and say how proud I am of the kids who DID show up, who did make an effort. And if this happens again, just do that from the start of the game when they start to give up, to the end. Celebrate the smallest of victories and while they don’t get everything down, I’m going to make noise when they show improvement or try or make some progress. When they know I’m all in, it moves the needle. When they know I have their back, it makes a difference and they try a little bit harder. Now is the time for reflection. Grab a notebook, make 2 columns. On the left what you didn’t like about the game or the season. On the right, what are you going to do about it. Every single item - brainstorm and get creative for next season. On another page, 2 columns. On the left - What you loved about the game and season, and on the right, How/Why/What made that happen? Learn from this season and use it as an opportunity to make every season after this one that much better! I can’t wait to hear about all the great things you do in the future. Thx for opening up and sharing, Coach! Lucky to have you out there coaching. Get some! 🏈🔥
