Arthas, and illidan are probably the best characters to have come out of the entire Warcraft franchise. Each taken thier own paths wether good or evil have ended in a satisfying way. Though wish arthas had a more affect in the shadowlands.
@@immortalkillah1187 how was he ruined? he stayed in character, wasnt a mary sue like sylv, khadgar got more of an important role than him in legion, or did you play something else?
And even they managed to fuck up the story, Uther's character made a complete 180* when he said "this is the memory I choose to remember him as" to "nOt jUstICe, venGeaNcE"
I was ready to throw hands with Blizzard's writing team before I watched this video. After looking into his story, I don't think anything could have redeemed Arthas. There's truly nothing he could do to redeem all of the horrors he's done. (I think Sylvanas got out a bit easy, too. She was really just tasked with undoing her mistakes. Is that all Tyrande could think of???) Arthas wasn't redeemed, but at least he wasn't denied rest. Death isn't an end in the WoW universe, so the writing team made sure he could never be brought back this way. The villain finally got the rest he deserved, and I think this is a fitting end to his story. How many Sylvanas-like community service hours could have scratched the surface of his redemption? He deserved this end.
@@elizabethc1782 Rest he deserves? He got told to fuck off by someone that committed a genocide against her own people and then faded into nothingness. He didn't even have a soul left after Zovaal tortured it. Arthas' life had been one giant manipulation from the jump and this condescending monster who CHOSE to do some of the most evil acts in warcraft lore sits in judgement of him and then dismisses him from existence like he was nothing. Blizz writers are garbage and probably only felt comfortable completely unmaking Arthas because he was a white straight male. No other villain from Warcraft has been as mightily fucked over both in the actual story and by a compromised writing staff.
Most of the people that wrote WotlK aren't in the company anymore, those are not the people that shared the same feeling with Arthas as we and the old devs did.
@@crad5476 They basically reduced one of the most, if not the most, iconic character in Warcraft lore down to a pawn, a lackey, a pussy. Not to mention they retconned a whole bunch of shit to make the shadowlands story actually make sense. But even then it still didn't make much sense. We will never forget Arthas or the lich king.
Arthas also never really had the redemption like Anakin did, in a way he represents what would happen if Anakin truly embrace the dark side like sidious, making him more tragic.
Ah yes, Star Wars. Another story of one born of an immaculate birth, who dared to defy the Jews, and suffered for it. The story of a Goblin and an Orc who tried to stop the chosen one from within the council every step of the way, so that they could greedily hang onto their own power that they wielded using a Good Cop / Bad Cop psychology. I bet you idiots believe that the Goblin Yoda was worthy of the Council of Paladins, merely because he learned how to hit the [Release Spirit] button. It's sad that Anakin had to side with an Ally who fell into practicing Elemental Shamanism, due to the Horde controlling the Paladins. Everything was backwards, upside down, and corrupted by Stephen Spielberg's influence. Another story of one born of an immaculate birth, who dared to defy the Jews, and suffered for it.
Always felt that Arthas did the right thing. When you arrive to a place and find that all the citizens are doomed not just to die, but to have their souls captured and tormented by Demon Worshippers, and you know for absolutely certain that you cannot find a alternative in time to save those souls from eternal suffering, the only option would be to kill and liberate those souls before they can be claimed, not just to keep them from being used as enemy soldiers against their own kingdom, but to protect the most sacred aspect of life, the soul. Jaina truly failed him in that she both knew of this alongside Arthas, but with her magical knowledge would have had a stronger understanding of the capabilities of a soul being corrupted and captured, and had personally seen the torment of those turned to undeath as she traveled with Arthas. Uther, someone with holy capabilities, would also be fully aware of how souls can become corrupted against their will, but may not have seen the same evidence as Arthas and Jaina so had a more reasonable reason to reject doing so, but should have been more willing to listen considering he HAD come across the undead before this point and knew of the damning effects. The main failure was Jaina, who, had she been on Arthas's side, could have convinced Uther, with the entire group being able to 'save' far more and possibly even get a foot up on Mal'Ganis, though he probably had a plan for that anyways.
I can see how Arthas' solution was Cruel, to some degree! the Question is: did either Uthor o r Jaina have an alternative plan, that would deal with the threat of the scourge? if not,, then what?
And that would prevent Arthas being so obsessed with revenge and killing Malganis to the point of obtaining the cursed sword and later kill everything even his own father and become the new King except for the undead
I always thought the same way and saw Arthas as a hero of his people, and a martyr because he knew what he did will forever be a stain on him but even when claiming Frostmourne he did so as he said "to save his people". Up to that point he was free and there was no flaw in his reasoning. He was a Hero till the end of his will. He was however betrayed, cursed, played by a Dread Lord, the Lich King, the demons, then finally the Jailer. No one actually saved him and till the last spark of his tormented soul his once friends, and the ones who either knew and shared his suffering or played part in his decisionmaking and pushed him down this path agreed he should be forgotten. What Sylvanas, Uther, Jaina did makes me sick.
From what i've seen from shadowlands content, Uther just seems like a bad dude that got his faith twisted almost like a cultist. Arthas end with the soul fragment were so poorly done, felt like a bunch of bullies shit talking him as the last goodness of his soul fades.
Now i look at it. Uther and Jaina were terrbile friends. Arthas had simple choice - either purges the city of ALREADY dead people who can become an unstoppable horde of undead or he lets them become just that and allow far more deaths to happen. If only they stayed with him and helped him get through it everything could've turn out different but they just literally ran. They were too cowardish to make that decision and proposed no alternatives. Because of that, Arthas had an enormous burden to bear alone and that was what destroyed him. To even think that later Uther still tosses him to the Maw out of vengance (I don't believe in this "justice" of his) is making me hate Uther even more.
- Mal'Ganis wanted Arthas, not Stratholme. He was using the plague to weaken Arthas and turn him to the dark side. - The zombies (and whole undead army) were too weak to destroy the city, especially with reinforcements awaiting outside. - Uther was unsure if the zombies spread the plague, so he argued with Arthas about it. He just wanted Arthas to study it more before getting into action. - Arthas knew that zombies do not spread the plague, as he had seen that in Hearthglen. However, he decided to purge the city anyway in order to fool everyone into thinking he was saving them. He wanted to be seen as a hero. - Jaina knew the zombies didn't spread plague, but she didn't speak up. She has always been one to stay silent and observe, and she didn't want to get involved in Arthas's madness. In short, Arthas knew that the zombies were not a threat, but he purged the city anyway in order to gain power and status. He was willing to sacrifice innocent lives for his own personal gain. I am very willing to debate with anybody on this topic.
We are led to believe it is the only way due to the narrative placed in front of us. We never consider that Uther Light Bringer may have had resources that had not been tapped yet. Or that the Archmages did not have any either.
You dont know the story. So shallow, your response is. Jaina left cause she was waiting for Arthas to clap her when he got back to her place. She didnt want Uther to know whay they were doing. Clap clap clap
Terrible friends, but good people. They saw it was wrong to kill people not yet transformed by the scourge. Just because a friend of yours is doing something doesn't mean you have to, or that it's morally good.
Anduin in SL is what Arthas could have been if people gave a shit about him. Jaina "I cant watch you purge the city" Proudmore turning into Jaina "purge everyone, no one is innocent" Proudmore If they tried to help Arthas he wouldn't have become the Lich King
Yeah he was totally loyal to Arthas, considering that it started with a kill. Thus it wasn't merely loyalty unto death but way beyond death to eternity.
Again 2:09:00 another retcon, Uther forgives Arthaz and remembers him in a positive light in the legendary questline, but in the Shadowlands, they've completely forgotten about that.
that's because Uther in Shadowlands is 1 half of his soul while Uther in ICC is the other part that was trapped in Frostmourne...confusing and stupid just like the whole Shadowlands expansion
I watched the human campaign playthrough for the original Warcraft III and it's really telling in what a cash-grab the remaster is that so much of the direction and clever presentation -- especially for in-game story beats -- is missing and didn't translate. It's of course nothing that the animators did wrong, it just seems like whoever was overseeing these scenes had no appreciation for how simple but effective the direction was. If you want to see for yourself just compare the original's Frostmourne chamber scene with the remaster and see. It's so dynamic! Each moment of Arthas behaving in a concerning way throughout the campaign incrementally adds stress and tension and it finally culminates in this scene. The original is able to communicate this, and is able to get across how far gone Arthas has become, how shocking it is that he has crossed a final threshold, how disturbing it is that he lingers looking at Muradin's body just long enough to let us see it sink in that he finds himself unable to care about what just happened. It's an important moment but it isn't overshadowed by its own importance. The remaster, by contrast, is a sequence of events, set to a bombastic soundtrack, that tries to sell how legendary we all know this moment is -- but it feels so disjointed because the tension doesn't finally snap at this moment. Muradin falls over and Arthas takes the sword and leaves. Muradin might as well have slipped on ice and Arthas might as well have left the chamber because he remembered that he left his car unlocked.
WC3 remaster was completely outsourced to a Chinese company. Blizz didn't have anything to do with it, they were just a publisher. To be fair though, they should've just not published the game as it's the worst remaster ever.
malfurion was ungrateful. if my brother sacrificed himself to save our home, I'd be devastated and would try to honor him, and help him find peace. Banishing Illidan made him into a monster, it wasnt the fel.
Knowing what happend in the Shadowlands and what the Dreadlords really were, I begin to think that there was a spirit within Frostmourne. When Arthas touched the sword his soul went into the blade and the spirit went into his body and took over. I allways thought that Deathknight Arthas was a diffrent character. The few seconds on top of the Icecrown Citadel was the first time since then we saw the real Arthas and Uther ultimatly doomed him to ethernal death by sending him into the hands of the Jailor who scard and destroyed what was left of his damage soul
It’s genuinely baffling to me that some people cannot wrap their heads around the fact that Arthas ceased to be Arthas the moment he laid his hands on Frostmourne. Even when he went to heal Muradin from the ice shard that impaled him, Frostmourne’s pull was such that it hypnotised Arthas into abandoning Muradin and taking it up. Shadowlands never happened. Remove it out of your mind and prevent it from ruining Warcraft lore for you.
"Is it truly righteousness that drives you? I wonder..." This may seem like a weird line to anyone who pays close enough attention. Well, because it is. I didn't realize it when I first did the ICC raid, but he was talking about us, the players. Questioning whether we were there because we were doing the raid for the story (in which case I'd assume most people would want to stop the Lich King if they had a chance to) or if we're there to just get sick loot. So cool.
Arthas' actions have shaped and traumatized so many people/heroes, we can see that before and after his death as the Lich King, the decisions he made are still echoed within the characters and game world. This is why I am still sad that his soul was reduced to nothing but a flicker of himself and then faded away. I understand, he was always a tragic hero and it is tragic what happened to him. But I find myself wondering if that spark, could have just you know for a moment changed shape, turn from a boy to his adult self and just faded away in his paladin form, he did not need to say anything ... I think that would still deliver a better gut punch than getting belittled by Sylvanas... it would underline the tragedy and perhaps made the player think about how things could have been ... if only he wasn't consumed by vengeance and took up Frostmourne.
Even so, he could've been redempted ... If Sylvanas was, everyone can be ... They just decided they didn't want him in anymore because he outshined all other characters.
Nothing about Arthas is tragic or heroic. People simp for him because they find his actions justifiable, when he was selfish and entitled from the very beginning. It was never about saving his homeland; it was about seizing absolute authoritative power and a name for himself. Even before Frostmourne, he culled Strat with no authority or notification to the king, destroyed his fathers ships so his soldiers couldn't go back to the Eastern Kingdoms, betrayed every merc on their trip to Northrend....and THEN he mortally wounded Muradin by ignoring his friends' pleas/warning to not pick up the cursed blade, then played knowingly into every plight he found himself in. He went looking for trouble, power, and notoriety and got nothing but darkness in return for it, as he deserved.
@@AndrewLanski He didn't look for power in the first place, he was protecting his people from the Orcs, then from the undead. He lost so many and in order to save what remained, due to a lack of power, he lost himself. He was a good hero gone bad, he deserved a lots of things, but denying the good things he did or his good intentions is not deserverd nor fair.
@@nelcorazs Why would we utilize 3rd party literature when we already have the direct source from the RTS game and the MMO to properly encompass the story for us and the character? Frankly I find your attitude is more tunnel visioned then anything.
İ remember when i saw first short animation of arthas when warcraft was out ,i wanted to play wow just because of that animation and the wow became only game that i would play,i had some break but i couldn't find any game that would satisfy me and now after more than 15 years i still wanted to know details about arthas, and i do still play the classic versions of this game.thanks for collecting all these.
Played WoW for years. Never played any of the RTS games before it. Never cared or understood the story. However, I can see why people were so upset with Shadowlands. The moment the video reached that part, I was like "...Wait, what?" lol
For me as someone who played Warcraft 1+2+ Beyond the Dark Portal for countless hours, Arthas was the biggest frustration that came with the WotlK Exp. I really liked the whole Ner'zhul plot in Wc2 and was shocked when the undead in Wc3 praised his name. To me Warcraft3 was his story, to me it was like watching star wars, knowing Palpatine but not Anakin/Vader. And every inch of Warcraft 3 + TFT felt like his mastermind being the big winner in the end. Arthas was nothing like a pawn, just a Vader copy - not even a single moment did I think he would play any role in the continuation of the story after TFT ending. And damn - instead it was Ner'zhul that got deleted like he was never there. Oh and yes: This new Lichking became a lot dumber than the OG.
I am playing through a Blood Elf beginning area, and this video is literally the perfect thing to accompany me as I grind my way to to level 20 and out of here. Your work is precious and wonderful! Don't ever quit!
Awesome! This was a whole movie. Thank you so much for creating this. Arthas will always be the best character in WoW lore for me. I wished for his redemption arc...
You know what’s most jarring and kinda cool, when arthas kills mal’ganis it was ofc implied he was referring to ner’zhul the lich king as the “dark lord” when asking arthas what he frostmourne was telling him, but in reality he meant zovaal, not realizing ner’zhul and by extension arthas had broken free of his domination and thus his utter confusion and dismay when he says “what?! He couldn’t possibly mean…” because he couldn’t fathom zovaal letting arthas kill him as it was the first step to the undermining of his own plans. I love it!
So many people are hating on the writing but I absolutely loved it. Sure its not as tidy as it couldve been but the general story and any and all plot points were amazing. The character arcs were absolutely incredible, for better for worse. This video too was also extremely well put together it satisfied my desire for knowledge on this topic and answered so many questions. Thank you for all the hard work!
who knows, maybe it wasnt even arthas' soul bound to the blade but someone else, how could uther know that its him.. maybe and only maybe, we will get to see arthas once again and he gets his redemption arc. As far as DF is going on, maybe blizz took steps into the right direction and gona repair things they fd up in the past
2:37:33 is the point in time where Wow lore comes to an end for me. I know everybody is hyped about Wotlk classic nowadays, but for me that was the greatest in it's time, when many said it was crap. And they completely destroyed Arthas' legacy when they transmuted the Helm of Domination into that lame golden piece of sh!t. I got, literally, all the books, novels and the, relevant to me, comics, but nothing stands out like the Arthas book does. Sad. Thanks for the compilation, I didn't believe I'd spend almost 3 hours watching this, but I did.
Only now do I realize, the voice talking when Arthas is kneeling before his father, isn't actually Arthas to his father, but Frostmourne itself talking to Arthas
What people refuse to understand is... You will become different person the moment you kill your own. Arthas heart become even more blackened and he turn to evil path and no longer knows the different between saving his people or delivering them into the devil's hand. This is where the line between right and wrong blurred.
Listen up you donkeys. Arthas ceased to be Arthas the moment he picked up Frostmourne. Frostmourne was so powerful that it even managed to hypnotise Arthas before he even touched it, and prevent him from healing a dying Muradin; to wrench him from his dying friend and mentor and to take it up instead.
Great video, great job! Amazing story of a truely amazing game character. Sadly this shows how terrible Shadowlands was lorewise for both Arthas and the game in general GOT season 7+8 flashbacks.
I fucking hate the Sylvanas cutscene where she usher's Arthas's soul away. No, Arthas's name will remain as the best villain and villain arc in Warcraft's history, Sylvanas will be remembered as a true villain who was Marry Sued back to the good side with absolutely no narrative reason.
Just Awesome. Youhave make an awosme work to tell us the full story of one of the mighty world of warcraft's character and clearly one of the most iconic video game's villain. I have a little question about the music, expecialy the cover of Arthas my son in the first chapter and the final song in the very and of the video. Is it possible to have a complete remix of them because they are so powerfull, so emotionnal and the audio quality is just awesome like the amazing theme you have make for Arthas 2 week from ago. And with the next WOW extention, i hope than we will have more information about the Tyr, dragons, Deathwing's history
Uther: "Glad I could make it, Arthas" Arthas: "I watch my tone with you, old man. I may be the prince, but you're still my superior as a paladin!" Uther: "As if you could forget. Listen, Arthas, there's something about the plague I should know..." Uther: "Oh, no. We're too late. These people have all been infected! They may look fine now, but it's just a matter of time before they turn into the undead!" Arthas: "What?" Uther: "The entire city must be purged." Arthas: "How can I even consider that? There's got to be some other way" Uther: "Damn it, Arthas! As my future king, order me to purge this city!" Arthas: "I am not your king yet, old man! Nor should you obey that command even if I were!" Uther: "Then you must consider this an act of treason" Arthas: "Treason? Have I lost my mind, Uther?" Uther: "Have you? Prince Arthas, by your right of succession and the sovereignty of your crown, you hereby relieve me of my command and suspend my paladins from service" Jaina: "Uther! He can't just..." Uther: "It's done! Those of you who have the will to save this land, follow him! The rest of you... Get out of his sight!" Arthas: "I've just crossed a terrible threshold, Uther" Jaina: "Arthas?" Arthas: "I'm sorry, Jaina. You can't watch me do this"
Arthas sacrificed himself for his people than whne he was cotrolled by Lich king he was an instrument of their destruction, and his family too, than he was used to forge a weapon for destruction of existence and cycle of life and death. Than he stopped even exist. That is so sad. I hoe Jaina will find a new love.
what about neltharion if there is part of neltharion's soul in shadowlands where he will redeem himself as the earth-warder black dragon aspect of earth and black dragonflight and good dragon he was once when he was corrupted by old gods and shadowflame.
I am actually glad they did not give Arthas a redemptive arc, and I like that he was reduced to a speck that faded away in the end. Arthas made his choices, and he was hardly a tragic hero or a sympathetic villain. He gave himself to evil willingly; Frostmourne just brought the evil forth. Especially when you read The Rise of the Lich King book, when he puts on the Lich King's crown, he deliberately murders the part of himself that was still good, leaving nothing but his evil side and the Lich King. Not every character that descends into evil deserves a redemptive story arc; sometimes, it is more interesting for them to fully descend into evil, and to see the consequences of taking that path. And to see him get reduced to an insignificant speck that fades into the wind is a fitting end for a character that chose the path that Arthas did. It is a good symbol of what evil ultimately does to the soul: it drains it away, devouring it until there is nothing left, and the person who chose the path is reduced to a wisp that fades and dies, unloved, forgotten, and insignificant. I liked it.
Its amazing that the story from Warcraft 3 has spanned for more than 20 years with most original characters still playing an important role. That is how good that writing was. Its shame that Bllizzard has given up on RTS games and focused on this RPG crap.
Story of Arthas is an excellent study of Blizzards decay. From captivating story, mesmerizing music and best in class cinematics to talentless Tom and Jerry style animated scenes, naive watered down narrative and pathetic full on cash grab. “Such a tragic end”.
I m still refusing to acknowledge what happened in shadowlands with his soul. Re experiencing ICC in wotlk classic was the best time in my life now, in Arthas and Illidan story we can see the old good Blizzard and what wow was about it was about lore not about parses and that other min maxing
thank you very much for this movie! I admit to being confused on at least one point: what of the remains of Arthas' soul? did it cease UTTERLY to exist after being freed? or does some of it remain? I never yet bought the shadowlands expansion.. and that soul did play a part , it seems in the events following the Fusion of the two into one Lich King!
20:08 - Et tu, Jaina? Now seriusly, if Jaina and Uther would have supported Arthas in that moment, there is a chance that everything that happened later could have been avoided. But it seems that presenting no other choice and LEAVING Arthas and the people of Stratholme to their luck was a better option to them.

Arthas, and illidan are probably the best characters to have come out of the entire Warcraft franchise. Each taken thier own paths wether good or evil have ended in a satisfying way. Though wish arthas had a more affect in the shadowlands.

Blizzard team was too busy getting drunk and causing scandal for the whole company's reputation. Can you really blame them?
I was ready to throw hands with Blizzard's writing team before I watched this video. After looking into his story, I don't think anything could have redeemed Arthas. There's truly nothing he could do to redeem all of the horrors he's done. (I think Sylvanas got out a bit easy, too. She was really just tasked with undoing her mistakes. Is that all Tyrande could think of???)
Arthas wasn't redeemed, but at least he wasn't denied rest. Death isn't an end in the WoW universe, so the writing team made sure he could never be brought back this way. The villain finally got the rest he deserved, and I think this is a fitting end to his story.
How many Sylvanas-like community service hours could have scratched the surface of his redemption? He deserved this end.
I insured from wow and all blizzard stuff cuss of overwatch
Arthas full life story is like a Lord of the Rings level movie. Just awesome
Actually I was thinking more about Star Wars as Arthas path is very similar to Anakins - from prime noble to prime evil

Sad to see what blizzard did to such an important character
tf you mean? he needed to die. there was no way for a redemption story.

Arthas/Lich King is like Darth Vader/Anakin, they are the icons of their respective stories
Feel the same, but at least Anakin married his loved girl and had two children, poor Arthas had only to be abandoned by Jaina
Indeed. And this is how Blizzard treated the legacy of WoWs most influencial character:
2:37:10

@@IamClement93
Anakin doesn't need to be redeemed in your eyes. He was right.
I can see how Arthas' solution was Cruel, to some degree! the Question is: did either Uthor o r Jaina have an alternative plan, that would deal with the threat of the scourge? if not,, then what?
yeah maybe if those two supported arthas he may have never sought out the frostmourne and never becoming the lich king thus saving more people
And that would prevent Arthas being so obsessed with revenge and killing Malganis to the point of obtaining the cursed sword and later kill everything even his own father and become the new King except for the undead
Not everyone ate the plagued grain. Some were gluten-free types. Arthas killed everyone. Sick or healthy. He is a murderer for his recklessness
Terrible friends, but good people. They saw it was wrong to kill people not yet transformed by the scourge. Just because a friend of yours is doing something doesn't mean you have to, or that it's morally good.

Arthas is like my childhood, ruined but sooo goooood!

I wonder..."
This may seem like a weird line to anyone who pays close enough attention. Well, because it is. I didn't realize it when I first did the ICC raid, but he was talking about us, the players. Questioning whether we were there because we were doing the raid for the story (in which case I'd assume most people would want to stop the Lich King if they had a chance to) or if we're there to just get sick loot.
So cool.
What a destiny. From a tragic hero to a soulless villain to a AAA battery.

Amazing story of Arthas!
Nah, I read the story and it can never do justice to what was laid in WC3

I love it!
