I'm gonna be honest here. The storyline and the way you tell it are so phenomenal, that I have actually chosen to watch this again instead of some redundant bs on Netflix. You are a beast of a narrator and as MrMike11233 said, Blizzard could make millions off of this nearly perfect storyline... Instead of their latest "Don't you guys have phones?" Thank you Nobbel

sadly blizzard already fucked themselves. I personally like the movie, but the more i think about it, the more i think this is a 1 and done film. Too much deviation from lore, story is everywhere. Outside of a typical fan this will not draw much attention. Go figure, blizzard dropped the ball AGAIN.
They could not possibly fit the whole lore into the movie...They had to cut some things out and adjust. Medivh's death and how Gul'dan got his powers from Kil'jaeden alone would need half an hour. They want to make three movies for the Warcraft games, not three movies for each game.

Exactly without Ner'Zhul the story of Lich King makes no sense. Sure they're going to go for it but it will be a shadow of what it could have been. This movie was amazing, the warcraft one was alright for non fans.
I think Ner'Zhul will show up on the next movie, together with his story on more detail. I definitely doubt it would be possible to fit warcraft 3 on even 2 movies. Even less warcraft 1 2 3 one movie each.

I've just watched this in one sitting from start to finish. Never seen so much love and attention to detail put into the Warcraft lore. You have my utmost respect sir. You deserve the title "The Lorekeeper". I cannot thank you enough for making this.
Most of people focus on Arthas when Lich King is being discussed. But i feel like forgetting about Nerzhul is a huge mistake. He got definately the worst part of the whole debacle. Got tricket, backstabbed, torturet, entombed as an armor, betrayed again and finally, basically erased from existence itself. And the worst part is, most in-lore characters are not even aware of how important he was. They remember Guldan and Arthas, so 2 of his apprentices/sidekicks... but Ner'zhul is mostly forgotten.
And all he wanted in the end is saving his people and when he realised what he has done, basically kicking the asses of beings that made him do it.
It's so sad to because Ner'zhul was actually a good orc. Loved his people, and got tricked. Got the shit end of the stick for sure.

This is definitely the most attentive and strongest story telling experience blizzard released and I think that’s why so many people have good memories associated with Warcraft 3 and Wrath of the Lich King expansion

Did Shdowlands make changes to this story? I’ve heard they changed who made the helm and Frostmourne and that, which I don’t really mind. Did they retcon anything else?

The section with Arthas and Jaina was beautifully narrated
My favorite part about when Arthas was climbing the spire to claim the armor of the Lich King, was that all of his flashbacks were ONLY the things that happened before he claimed Frostmourne. Not only is it the last shreds of himself ringing in his ears, it's also a reminder of what he had done even before his soul was stolen away to the blade, that, he wasn't just turned dark because of a weapon, but by his own choices.
True those are his choices, but he was forced into impossible ones one after another. I'm not saying his fall isn't of his own doing but it's still more nuanced than that IMO, ever since he was forced to put Invincible down as a child Arthas was always very emotionally weak, he was introduced to the concepts of guilt, loss and death far faster than most of us were. Mal'ganis & Ner'zhul used that against him, they're the ones who put him in the Stratholme situation and forced his hand, not to mention the two people he trusted most turned their backs on him at the time he needed them most. Although it's understandable from their point of view from Arthas' it still feels like betrayal, regardless of the reasoning behind it they did abandon him.
After that it's just a never ending spiral, his desire for vengeance at any and all costs is understandable I think, and his dealing with the mercenaries in Northrend was, while insanely ruthless and brutal, necessary in his eyes. That's indeed a choice he made himself, but I think we have to remember at that point he "lost" his would-be lover, his mentor and most recently even his father in a way, who in their right mind would want to lose anymore after that ? I believe in his mind vengeance was all he had left, he certainly wasn't gonna let random mercenaries get in the way of that.
@@dreiz5403 thats a good point, and i suppose it feeds into my initial point, in that, he did lose his soul before frostmourne, just, in a different way.
@@cosmicfails2053 Yes I think so, but I also believe he could still be saved until the moment he picked Frostmourne up, he was pretty warped but not irredeemable just yet, in short his soul was "only" halfway lost at that point.
Plus there's no way in hell Uther and/or Jaina would've let him take it upon hearing what Muradin said about it being cursed had they been here (assuming they even reached it) and I don't think he reached the point where he was psychologically able to kill them if they got in his way yet, nevermind the fight itself.
He lacked the power to get through the undeads and kill Mal'ganis on his own and that's one of the reasons he seeked it out in the first place, but it could've been a very different story with them by his side.
Also even without the whole "vengeance" thing it's a fact that Mal'ganis was believed to be behind the Scourge at the time, it seems kind of weird to me that the kingdom of Lordaeron as a whole - aside from Arthas - didn't really act upon him walking away pretty much unscathed and even tried to recall the prince when he gave chase. IMO his actions alone are pretty good arguments in favor of "kill this very obvious danger to our kingdom" if only to preserve themselves from future nefarious plans of his design. It's like Arthas is the only one concerned with the wellbeing of his kingdom and its citizens, certainly doesn't help him getting over his mental breakdown.
Actually it touched on how Arthas was no more much prior to the symbiosis. Parasite being what it is.

I remember playing through the story of Warcraft 3 and the Frozen Throne. Arthas' betrayal and subsequent downfall was one hell of a ride! Fantastically written story and characters.
I wanted to watch for ten minutes but that quickly turned to three hours
If you ask me. After Bolvar said "Never return" that would have been a great ending to the warcraft storyline.
Cataclysm would have been a better end if it actually crippled the factions. Orgrimmar got BIGGER after the cataclysm, thunder bluff didnt seem that different, i dont think silvermoon was even touched, and the undercity was left intact. I dont play alliance, but i think the only change i remember is stormwind harbor. It seemed like the cataclysm made the factions way stronger, since they all started to start some big wars. I would have liked to see orgrimmar in ashes, with a volcano rising from its center, and the horde having to turn to crossroads into their new main city or something. seeing less faction bases would have been nice too, like in vanilla. In vanilla when you were a horde, going to the southern EK felt awesome. There were almost no bases for horde, Kargath, flamecrest, stonard, and gromgol, with a few neutral points. You felt like how the horde was supposed to be, small and spread apart, but somehow survivng in places they honestly had no real chance to survive in. Like seriously, seeing horde bases in badlands/burning steppes feels like it shouldn't happen, the dwarves capital is just north of them and the human capital is just south of them.
the Orcs were in the badlands before, the old Horde, so some of that stuff was left over from the Second War

Thats all fine and dandy, but most of the bases are currently incredibly isolated and easy to invade. Kargath is completely surrounded by alliance, has no possible path to recieve reinforcements, and is just completely undefendable. I understand why it was there, but it shouldn't still be there now.

+Nobbel87 hey Nobbe i have a theory. in Legion we get to know that Vol'jin is gone. i think that Sylvanas had some thing to do with it. do to that in sige of ogrimmar she says that she will never take orders from a Troll and that it is time to test him. it is only a theory but i think it is a good one.

Watching in 2021 for the first time. About halfway through right now and I can't thank you enough. Amazing video.
As a horse owner, Invicible's demise is both heartbreaking and infuriating. All good horseman know not to gallop a horse in inclement weather.
It's realistic though. A cocky young prince could absolutely think he's got it, like nothing could touch him. Even normal kids that age can end up feeling that way and doing stupid stuff.
I absolutely loved that you included facts from the official novel, like i.e. in the end when he sleeps and dreams and then kill the last mercy in himself AND the lich king aka ner´zhul, becoming the master of his own...thats something most people who retell the lore miss.
When you know this story, you understand the tragedy behind "The Wrath of the Lich King" trailer.

as someone who is jumping on the wow bandwagon at 31 years of age and trying to catch up.. this is awesome and i appreciate the work that went into this. if you ever write a warcraft book i'll buy it.
also, you look at the value the film industry are getting out of comics these days, warcraft lore would make a thousand films!
This story .... every monday i was like "YES finaly here it is" then i watched a 20 minute episode , it felt like 2 minutes and i was like "What whappens next ! i must know!!!!"
So when I first started watching this I thought it was the usual length of an hour and a bit, never checked timestamps as it came on with autoplay. 3 hours 15 minutes later and holy shit that was a brilliant video. Thankyou, Nobbel, for that brilliant telling :)
Legion felt a lot like avengers endgame, because sargeras and the legion is kinda the reason for 99% of the events that happened in war craft history

An amazing story, both tragic and exciting. Arthas is one of the most interesting characters that I've ever seen.

Part One and Two could be about Ner'zhul and his fall from grace, the slaughtering of the Draenei, the opening of the Dark Portal, the Alliance vs Horde, Kil'Jaedan and his punishment for Ner'zhul, etc.
Part Three could be the story of Arthas' younger years, training with Muradin, his acceptance as a paladin, the death of Invincible, the purging of Stratholme, Arthas' trip to Northrend and acquisition of Frostmourne, and his descent into madness.
Part Four could be about Arthas being a death knight and his dealings with the Legion. The murder of his father and destruction of Lordaeron. His battle with Uther, his battle for the Sunwell and him raising Sylvanas as a Banshee. Everything else up to him awakening as the Lich King on the Frozen Throne.
Part Five could be about the things the Lich King does. The battles in Northrend, The Wrathgate, The siege of Icecrown, and his defeat at the hands of Tirion Fordring. His final moment with the ghost of his father. Bolvar taking the burden as the jailer of the dead could be the end.

If I ever win the Billion Dollar Lotto, here is what I am doing:
I will setting aside 500mil and go straight to blizzard to make a movie trilogy. The trilogy will be the entire Lich King saga with no actual actors, Ready Player One style, and finally have the full cinematic WoW movie we all be hoping for. Beginning with the events in Warcraft III and leading to the fall of The Lich King.
Part 1: The origin of Arthus and the events leading up to him becoming The Lich King
Part 2: Is the Lich King ruling and ending in similar fashion as Infinity War where the Lich King seemly wins
Part 3: Will contain the collaboration of factions and races to end The Lich Kings reign
With such a lore it must be done to the absolute fullest. I would not care if I never made a single cent as profit, it's the trilogy we all deserve.

Great video. I'm almost half way through. An interesting point I think about Stratholme is that we, as the players know that what he did was absolutely necessary. Because the Infinite Dragonflight tries to interrupt this sequence of events to ultimately destroy all life on Azeroth, we know that Arthas was forced into this terrible choice, and that he was right in what it did, even though it damned him. If he had not purged the city, the plague would have spread uncontrollably, and the Alliance of Lordaeron would have been wiped out. This would have weakened the remaining races to the point of being unable to defend themselves later on. The Infinite Flight's interference is proof of this.

The narration is absolutely astounding and such addictive listening. Warcraft lore is steeped in love, grief, and sorrow as well as all the power struggles, magic and incredible battles. But, these retellings breathe new life into the world of Azeroth. I wish I had found these videos earlier, but glad I've discovered them now.

I've said it many times in my life and I will say it again: 'Wrath of the Lich King' was and always will be the best expansion. Arguably the funnest time in my life was when I got into this expansion. I don't have anywhere near as fun playing the game nowadays.

The armour was made for ner'zul by a smith from the Shadowlands and presumably his spirit inhabited it by the time Arthas showed up.

I think that it was the truth. Idk, maybe it's something about The Revenant's voice acting, but it sounds like he really meant what he was saying.

Well as you saw, it was the lich kings plan that we would reach him so he could add us to his armys, Looking at it now, it is just dumb from us to walk in there even tho arthas could have easily defended more effective, making it an obvious trap
Awesome job as always, Nobbel! I mean, I knew somewhat of Arthas's backstory, but never the full spectrum. Plus, I got to learn more about the history of the Lich King that I was completely unaware of.
