My son and I love your videos and we watched this and I personally want to applaud you please don't feel embarrassed we can clearly see this wasn't an easy video to make and it took alot for you to do I know alot of people will relate the best thing you can do is voice your feelings and men tend to not do so easily. We all have connections to items and it can be hard to let go of nostalgia especially when they bring back such happy memories. Well done Ian big hugs
Let's face it - you are sitting on a small gold mine! You have built a fantastic platform to sell through a lot of this and make a decent amount of money. For most of us the Mrs would be telling us to black bag everything and get down the tip. You should raise enough money to convert the garage into your Man Cave - nice shelving/lighting etc and display your refined collection. It'll give you something to focus on and a real purpose behind each sale with the end goal being a fantastic new space that represents you and the channel.
I was trying to sum up my thoughts last night on this and tbf the above reply kind of sums it up. The wife wouldn't have this for a second, stuff and things in every room, the mental toll would be insane. If your family aren't fussed by this then more power to you but it's enabling behaviour because that's become an issue hence your own video. I've recently emptied my shed and loft and the amount of crap, even if it has 'value' was ridiculous. Move it on or create a proper space for it. If you can't display it now or have no plans to in the near future, it should go, otherwise its stuff in boxes no one gets to enjoy. I think some tough love is needed on this one, I hope something positive comes out of this.
I am a collector also but in no way as much as you, I display my collections and if I run out of space I sell some or stop Collecting that item. Sometimes when I look at a collection I think I’m over it and sell it. It is much harder for you and looks like it took a lot of emotion out of you to make this video. Hope you can find a way to downsize your collections, it will help pay for the loft conversion for a start.
I’m a collector myself mate , when you said about collecting for the sake of it , I was in that same situation before and during lockdown just buying random things for the sake of it and sticking it in tubs or in drawers , that i had no real connection with . No need to feel embarrassed mate you make the best and most important videos look how far you have come on you TH-cam channel and journey , see this as a positive step for you and also helping someone else who may be struggling with this too. All the best MOP ❤
Wow. That was a really honest, heartfelt video and I absolutely applaud you for that. I think when collections start invading other rooms in the house it can start to be a problem, which was when I first noticed that I may have a hoarding problem. Spent the weekend in my garage going through my collection and random paperwork that I seem reluctant to bin and it is really difficult if you aren't in the right mindset to tackle it. I think the fact that you are aware that it may be getting out of hand is the first step. I wish you all the best in sorting it.
You are your own worst enemy, but you answered your own question. i can certainly relate to this so much that it's like an addiction or an addictive personality you need to choose, which means the most to you out of the collections and the others make money from them to make the man cave or a roof conversion or a cracking holiday that is with family and friends they say we cant take the things we have with us but you certainly can make memories you will figure it out in time just enjoy what is the most enjoyable part of your resources take care and dont beat yourself up with it hope to see more videos soon
Hi Ian. Love your channel. Great video to make. I am a part time reseller, much less committed than you are for sure, but I am also a qualified clinical hypnotherapist. I can see the stress in your body language at just the thought of what you are going through. I thought your idea of having a more focussed collection a great idea, as I too have a collector ‘nature’. Don’t try and do this overnight. Be very specific how you want it to be and move toward that at a pace that is comfortable for you. One of your viewers commented about not sourcing anymore until you have listed all the unsold items. I believe this is a good suggestion, but again, go at your pace, such as go out sourcing one Wednesday, the next Wednesday, you list your attic items, even if it was just a few, just to get you moving in the right direction. Happy to chat more if you want to. All the very best.
A vey brave video Ian. So good that you have recognised the problem and are trying to address it. Don't try to do too much at once, BUT make a start! I agree with some of the other comments, for example stop sourcing and start listing - but I know sourcing is the fun part so maybe make it much more targeted towards certain items. One thought I had is that selling your 'collection' could go a long way to funding your loft conversion then... you could have the fun of building up a new, more targeted, collection. I wish you well my friend.
I sold all of my 'collectables" recently. Now collecting silver coins . Takes up alot less space, and i think they will hold long term value. Love everything about your vids, keep going. Good luck ❤❤
Perfectly healthy to recognise one’s traits, and to develop strategies but try not to be too hard on yourself. Your videos bring so much fun into people’s lives-that’s something to be really proud of.
You’ve become the Master of Too Many Pieces. Having watched your channel for a few years now I think maybe all the gaming pick ups from marketplace Etc have meant you’ve taken your eye off the reselling side and remembering to shift more than you buy. Perhaps have 3 or 4 collections on the go rather than a few dozen. Also with collecting a toyline as big and old as transformers you’ll always have more scope to grow and grow the collection with no conceivable end point.
Ian same as our house hold if you love what you are doing keep on doing it !! I have rooms full of stuff which I need to sort gonna be hard but it needs to be done . Love this channel head up dude and keep up the good work !
Fantastic video. You touched on so many things that I imagine a lot of sellers feel, and it certainly hit home with me. Stuff all over the place that you grow an attachment to. It's easily done. I've got things I've bought to sell, and then they end up just sitting around not being listed due to liking them. I look and think back to things I've sold in the past that I kind of wish I'd kept, even though I would never use them. When I moved house I was shocked how much stuff I had. It really is a concern. The Wife regularly picks me up on it.
The best conditioned ONE of the things you love or are nostalgic about is the first place to start my friend! Having 3-10 of something is not a collection it’s an unnecessary piece of your personal love and memory of that object! We all have that problem! Missing out on something when we were young or losing that favourite toy / needing to complete the set or looking for that better version of what you already have !! You are a smart guy and have managed to collect things us your viewers can relate to and appreciate but ONE, THE BEST of that particular thing is enough ! As one of my favourite you tubers you have always been honest, true and genuine on camera! Now you need to be that to yourself and your collections! A boxed, clean version of that ONE particular thing / object is what we all look for and my friend that is enough !! Then your collection gets smaller and more containable!! Thanks for a great inspirational video as always! You are a legend with an amazing collection of nostalgia but personally I think ONE of a great thing is enough ! Much love ❤
Ian why don't you put a hold on sourcing between now and the end of the year and list, list and list some more on your days off and reduce your stock down. It will make you feel better and also it will make some space.
Because he has a serious shopping addiction. Like all car booster you tubers they have issues with hoarding. They never sell half the stuff. They buy 100 times more than they ever sell.
@@ajg5585Personally I think it's the collecting that leads to hoarding. I myself am a reseller but have absolutely no attachment to my items. For me they a purely a product to make more money. I also enjoy the thought that the people I sell to like what I provide even though to myself the item is worthless. That way when my stock levels become too high I have no problem holding back on the sourcing untill I'm back down to a manageable stock level
Also easy to fall into the trap. Think things in the garage looks quite silly for a grown man Are the boys allowed to touch these? Best of luck Ian what ever you decide.
I feel your pain brother, it is hard to let go of the stuff, I think you having your loft conversion done is the right time to slowly get rid of the stuff you don't even look at anymore, think of all the space you will have, not just in your loft..... thank you for the video, Pete.👍
Love the video Ian, I’m currently 10 minutes in, not sure of the outcome. Personally “hoarding” or collecting things that are “alternative investments” Likes of the retro games / consoles (some toys) is fine to go up the attic for a Rainy day “retirement fund” But for sure the likes of the rescue bots etc, just list & get them gone. Ideally if you are collecting you want to be able to display your collection rather than having it tucked away in the attic
Sending lots of love and support to you Ian. I understand where you are coming from but you are in a perfect position to sell the items and make a good profit. Look at it as an opportunity to truly refine your collection. Everything that you do sell will be archived in eBay so you can use that as a platform to reminisce. Lastly, going through your things and organising and selling them will be very cathartic for you and will be interesting to us the viewer as well. All the best.
I was like this many years ago. Moved house many times and dragged all this stuff with me that had no value other than sentiment. One day I filled the car with all the non value stuff (like you said old school stuff silly clothing items and bits like that) and dumped it. Then I sold off the rest. It was hard. Hurt a bit during the process. But once it was gone…. Oh boy I was free. Now I’d sell my Nan if I could get a good price. I hold barely anything. Good luck whatever ya do.
Great video mate, reckon a lot of people - including myself - will relate to - for me the difference is curation. I think the journey from massed stuff to a curated collection is a natural process many of us go through - you know what you need to do - by the way collections and collecting doesn't need to have an end point - I consider my collection - records for me - as dynamic - it changes frequently as I bring in new bits and let others go - eventually it all will go in any case - this way I can keep enjoying all aspects of collecting acquiring, owning, listening (in my case) and moving on. Brilliant video very honest - hope it helped you getting it out
Well done Ian on taking the first step and recognising there is a problem, i am in a similar situation. When people have mentioned hoarding to me my reaction has always been to take offence and i have justified myself by saying "i'm not as bad as that person on tv or TH-cam". So hearing you say that too rang with me. I always have this justification in my head that the thing i am buying is just here temporarily until someone buys it, But I have all sorts of things that i have bought to sell then told myself "this would be cool to do this or that with" but never found the time so it finds its way into a draw to be forgotten about along with the last thing. Good luck Ian, making this video was a good move I'm sure you will get plenty of people willing to lighten the load
I once heard somewhere 'if it doesn't make you smile you don't need it' it helped me get rid of a lot of things I thought I had to keep but really I didn't want or need. :) I've been there Ian, making decisions is tough but you will feel better for it afterwards, keep the things that make you smile. 🙂
Ian, I love all the videos you make but this one definitely pulls at the heart. I can see your struggle just in the video. It's great to see you've made a start by talking about it and believe me men don't generally talk about stuff, try not to worry what other people think, unfortunately it's easy to say but nobody's perfect. I to have amassed a lot of items supposedly to resell but have ended up keeping bits for my collections, yes I do have more than one - Star Wars, Disney Cars, Marvel and DC. I hope in time (sooner rather than later due to your loft conversion) that you are able to sort through items and be able to make the right choice. I wish you all the luck in what is a difficult decision ❤
I love your openness and honesty, your video shows strength and character and thank you for sharing. I’m not a psychologist but I get amazing pleasure finding retro or vintage items and handling them before finding them great homes and getting a small payment for it
Ian I'm totally with you and what a great honest video. I collect similar items and have also been buying toys that I know I can make a profit on. Problem I have I never get around to listing them so over past 15 years I've sold some items to buy other items so really haven't got anywhere until this year. I have one large shed and one small and 8 large tubs in my garden loft and two landings full of toys. My wife knows I struggle with it so she's been really good and helped me get rid of quite a bit this summer through car boots. It's helped quite a bit but far from sorted but in the right direction. Instead of re investing we've paid for a week away with spending money and had quite a few days out and meals out. I do have tough times ahead tho because initially I started collecting toys I had or wanted which is also a bit out of control to. Maybe a suggestion you could pimp your garage up and get some nice shelfs put up and keep it all in one place I think that's my aim also as i think that will help.
From the start, we can see how much its affecting you and your mental health, which is extremely important. I think you should get the kids involved and the wofe and get them to help you go through things and pick out the things that mean the most to you. Set yourself a target of around 30-40% of your stuff and then get that all listed dude. You can use the money to book a family holiday, get yourselves away and enjoy some quality family time and remind yourself what lifes about. You're an amazing reseller and you can clearly see you're a great father/family man as well and by doing these thinfs, you can help prevent any future issues that might come from not doing anything.
Well done on opening up on that mate. It's hard to address an issue when it's so close to your heart. Your passion shines through in the vids but it's important for us to make descions that scare us for us to progress. Time to get some of that investment back 👍 good luck man! 👍
Bless you Ian. Brave video, at least you have recognised it. You're intelligent and erudite, you know something has to give but go easy on yourself. Rephrase it in your head, those Rescue bots arent a "collection" , they're a "bundle" (or several) for eBay. What do you love most, what gives you real joy and you're are proud of? Seems like the Transformers and retro gaming to me (but only the bits you connect with) and start to sell the rest to fund that loft conversion. Christmas is coming up, you'd make a lot of money quickly if you can part with some of it.
This really hit home, I've got a few years on you, but my collecting started with 1 graphic novel The dark knight returns which I bought back in 91-92 well ive now got a loft full, a spare room full, and a 8×10 shed. My collection toys I never had as a child and been one of five we had very little. But it's evolving everyday I see a toy line I like and bang, my latest thing is marvel sellects and the build a figure lines. I do sell but only to fuel my other addiction which is metal detecting. Anyway I won't bore you but just know you are nt alone and if you have any marvel figures let me know I'd be happy to take them off your hands
I can hear how anxious you are Ian, If I was to give you any advice it would be to keep only 2 or 3 going , like transformers, masters of the universe etc..sell the rest and thank your lucky stars your wife is still with you, Its ok when it is in you own space like a shed but when it starts creeping into other peoples spaces like your bedroom ,that's not on. I also think your kids will benefit from seeing you scaling it down, then they will say yes we can have a collection for a while then we get rid..GOOD LUCK !!! ♥♥
I can resonate with you as I've also found I'm starting to collect more things just for the sake of collecting. Also a part time reseller - not needing the monies as much its easier to think that adding it into a collection will be easier to keep for a later date. Definitely something I need to be more conscious about, but hats off for addressing its become a problem
Ian, I know and feel everything you mentioned in this video, I'VE ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME! For me, I decided to sell my collection to pay for a specific thing that I couldn't afford with usual salary(or justify buying) the focus of that goal broke my attachment to the many random items and as I sold off the valuable ones it became easier to shift the bulk and non valuable. As an adult I see many aspects in myself that match my sons ASD diagnosis, by reading into ASD Ive got a greater understanding of my whole life. That anxiety feeling is real but grab hold of it, set a goal and refocus. But let's be honest an addictive personality could be put to much worse use 😁!! Thanks for this video, good luck!
Hello Ian There is a difference between hoarding and memories Memories bring good feelings and nothing wrong with holding on to something that reminds you of a prominent time in your life. Without people like yourself that collect things...there would be no demand for collectors. Don't stress. Enjoy what you do. Been following you and Ricky Resells for a month or so and value your opinion massively. Even seen you in a few charity shops in Rhiwbina a few weeks back but wasn't sure it was you at the time. Your collection is awesome by the way. Enjoy!
some solid introspection here, good to see it! has given me some thoughts about my own borderline compulsive purchases on the Unity Asset store, and my library of 500+ steam games which i'll never play. It's a little differnent because they're digital items, but i covet them never the less!
Fantastic video, your channel is one of the best, most honest reselling channels on yt. Keep going, thin it all out. Keep what means something and make a fortune off the rest!
I had a similar problem with transformers afew years back and i made a big decision to only collect ones from G1, G2 and trilogy i have never looked back since making the decision is easy doing it is not but once you get it motivated it gets easier to not pick up ones i dont want :)
Try drawing up a league table of the different genres and niches you collect, from there you can start working out where to draw a line between true collecting and hoarding.
I used to collect random 'stuff' that i liked. It could be anything. My wife cured me after i met her as she didnt like any of it on display in the house, so it was boxed up and stored in the garage. Because it was boxed up, i couldnt display it properly and never saw most of it. Seven years later someone said to me its just expensive insulation for the garage and they were right. I started to sell my stuff at the flea market in Carmarthen, which was an eye opener for my wife, as she would have skipped the lot. After a few visits, i was running low on stock, so i started going to auctions to get more stuff to sell. This was now financing a holiday and trips out, so all was good. I now no longer collect anything that isnt for sale. Since covid, I dont sell at the flea markets or boot sales any more, just on ebay. Keep one or two collections and sell the rest. Bin your uni stuff.
I completely agree with this. Personally I think the best way to resell is to keep personal attachment out if it. If you can't sell it or display it it's worthless.
I feel your pain Ian. I've been having the same thing's going round in my head for 10 or so years now. I do worry about it at times, then otgrr days it doesn't bother me.
It's something I've not really thought about until I took all the stuff out the loft. I've been blissfully just chucking stuff up there as part of 'the collection'. Where I struggle is I find it hard to let go of anything that's in 'the collection'
Ok a few minutes in and it's funny you should say about leads. I had 3 boxes of random leads today, I've spent most of the day going through them wrapping them up so they don't tangle and if I have more than 4 of one type I'll take them to the recycling centre. I'm down to one tidy box now, 1 box to go recycling the 3rd box of was caused by wires being tangled and not wrapped up.
@@MasterofPieces yeah it's something I battle with too. One of the reasons I use to justify it is, "it says something about me". However I do have a cull here and there, like you say there is money in full collections of toys, books and what not. It helps having somewhere to display what you want to show though like a man cave and stored in cabinets or shelves, so you can show friends and family. If you have no connection to it maybe it's time to move that stuff on for example the "my little ponies" or whatever you never had when you were younger. I'm guessing your misses will help guide you, do t leave her out of it. On another note I'm having trouble breaking away from my daughter's toys now too. Because I remember her playing with this or that. I'm worried my traits are rubbing off on her now too.
I think the difference between a collector and a hoarder is that the collector owns the collection and takes pleasure in it. The collector is able to add to and part with, elements of their collection. Whereas the hoard owns the hoarder and they feel trapped by it, unable to part with any of it. You are starting to feel uneasy, rather than happy with what you own which shows you need to pare your collection down. This issue strikes a chord with me because my collecting had also got out of control and it no longer made me happy. You are right in thinking that you need to start with the less emotional stuff first as it is easy to deal with. It goes on ebay/to the charity shop/out the house etc. I found I then got onto a roll so things became more easy to process. Take 1 item, look at it/pick it up. What was my gut reaction? Happy/I want to keep (KEEP), Groan/it's just a space stealer (OFF IT GOES). Good luck with the journey Ian.
It's all just stuff mate. Whatever came from the loft, sell it. Put the profits to one side and use it for a holiday with the kids next summer. That gives you a goal. Good luck
I had to be really ruthless a few years ago and sort out and sell all of my sega Saturn's mega drives, Amigas, spectrums etc etc it was a wrench but they were getting damaged and mice were chewing on them and the leads that went with them ....didn't do anything with the money I got it just got absorbed into the bank ....but now with the stuff I'm selling I'm halving it and the oh is saving his for an old car and I've just bought a motorcycle 🙂so makes me feel a bit better .....I've still got over 50 sewing machines 😮lol it's good to sort stuff out but hurts too keep up the good work you'll get through this 😊😊
I can massively relate to this as I also have hoarding tendencies, even though I'll tell myself it's part of a collection to try and rationalise my actions. Toy cars, clothing, footwear, you name it, it's all been accumulated, to the point where my loft, where I work and conduct reselling activities, is an absolute tip! But recently I've had a bit of a realisation that there's no need to keep all this stuff and it's as if the sentimental side of things has just evaporated. It's super tough to try and snap out of this mindset, but reading through the comments, it sounds like so many people have felt and are feeling similar emotions. But I know you'll make it work, whatever you choose to let go and what to keep; it's realising that a problem exists that can often be the most difficult stage to overcome!
Well done admitting that you have a problem with hoarding, and your right it is a mental thing I think personally it’s starts when you lose some one or something that you loved a lot if that makes sense Ian
Hi Ian Don't be too hard on yourself, it's easy to run out of space when collecting retro toys/figures etc. Maybe just decided to collect a couple of your favourite, most nostalgic toy lines and let the others go. I just collect Batman toys /figures now and still most of them are in the attic out of sight 😅 Keep your chin up mate, you will sort it. Thanks for the videos, always a pleasure to watch 👍
Hi Ian love your videos I’ve been watching them for quite a while , I’ve actually said to my sister your collection seemed to be getting so big with lots of vintage collecting going on , think you need to stick to your favourites and maybe let some others go , you could make a load of money and think of satisfying feeling you’ll get from selling it, I’m sure you’ll make the right decision ,do a few boot sales for some of the not so high value bits .Your 2 boys will love doing them with you.😊
I had the exact same thing with a loft conversion. I’d been putting stuff up there for years, forgetting about it and also thinking it wasn’t lots of stuff. As soon as you bring it down and it’s taking up a room you can’t escape how much you’ve got. We had a massive clear out after that and just focused on what we really wanted and needed. Definitely take some time to work through your stuff and clear out what you don’t need. I always find a clear out therapeutic.
The chase and find is the endorphin rush moment. Looks like you have that too. Key for me with collecting is knowing when to move stuff on. Primarily I collect gaming stuff but due to the competitive nature of sourcing gaming nowadays, I use my other stuff pick ups as a funding option. Lost interest in an item……move it on, before you slide into an overwhelming quantity of “stuff” good topic buddy.
Well, you’ve got alot of stuff there you can turn into money if you ever need to. And ur right, start with those rescue bits and get rid. Even if you sell all of them and use the money to buy one item you need for your collection then it’s a win and success. Oh, I’ll stop sending you any transformers in find now 🤣
Have you heard of the 7 Whys? You start with a broad question like ‘ why do i like collecting?’ Whatever you answer ask why again and keep going until you drill down into whats going on , very interesting self reflection & very helpful
Can really relate to this, although I pick up lot to sell (part time like you), I don't list anywhere near as much as I should. My vice is predominantly records, I quite often pick up with the intention of selling but the piles just build up and I don't play the ones I do want to keep either. I've started to experience the anxious nature you talk of, so I'm trying to break the cycle by making a concerted effort to sell more and clear the spare room and garage. Look at the stuff and see it as a holiday not stuff to keep. There is a core I will keep but with the intention of thinking its something to leave the kids, a nice surprise as to its value when I'm gone. You could maybe do the same with the valuable stuff, they won't have the same attachment and will more likely sell it. Its a fine balance and I'm definitely in both camps of selling and hoarding, my partner says so quite often when the stuff piles up again. Its definitely the aim to slim to a more streamlined operation and stick to the notion of small part collecting for myself and picking up too sell in order to fund what do want.
I always wondered this based on the garage arrangement. Fair play for showing it. My spare room is the same and it's not a large side hustle for me! But hopefully you manage to let some things go collection wise!
I think a lot of us are the same mate. I started getting into collecting vintage Action man through reselling and now had a huge collection. It's recently started to spread to other vintage toys as well.
Completely know where you're coming from. At one point I was collecting every and any games for any generation console. Turns out all I really enjoyed was the ps1 and xbox 360 games as they have more nostalgic ropes. Now I have stacked the other games in a box for CeX trade-ins (out of sight) and ps1/360 are on display 👍
An idea that might help you, keep a spreadsheet with millions of tabs for each different category - log what you have and list it. Get it sold and gone but the collector part of you will have that record that you owned it at some point - even allows you to keep "collecting" moving forward but instead of throwing it in the loft or spare room you're just adding it to the spreadsheet then getting it gone!
If it was me, I would go through it carefully, selling anything I had no real nostalgic attachment to. Then I would buy proper plastic storage tubs/boxes for the stuff I wanted to keep/collect and possibly catalogue it all too. Would be easier to stack/store and keep rather than shoved in cardboard boxes. If you have a few of the same item (you mentioned you have a few Nintendo DS consoles for example), keep the nicest one and sell the others. As for old school work /books, I still have some of those, I did get rid of the boring crap and just kept old school reports for now. Its hard but I felt better for it. Its probably very daunting to you as it seems like a big job right now but chip at it and do a little bit every day and it will help clear your mind. Just my thoughts, good luck with it!
Hi Ian. Good to talk about things that are bothering you. I did a similar thing on my Facebook page this week. You and I at at totally opposite ends. I love transformers and get great pleasure from buying them. But instant regret about the money I've spent. Every item I buy goes straight up for sale. My house looks like I've not moved in. I'll regularly look through the cupboards trying to find things to sell. It's not a case of needing the money. Once it's gone I don't have to have it cluttering my brain. But it means I can't enjoy collecting. Which is something I find really sad. I'd love a room dedicated to transformers. But my brain won't let me do it. I love your idea of moving on thing you have no connection too. That shouldn't hurt you too much. Good luck. Paul.
Don't feel bad about it, it's good to admit it needs sorting. I used to be the same, had lots of stuff that I thought was a collection but it wasn't. My advise would be pick 2 or 3 things and focus on those. So maybe transformers /ps1/pokemon for example etc. Then go for quality over quantity and have a set space for each collection you don't allow yourself to outgrow. Firstly pick a few bits from each collection you know you can do without, sell those bits and it will be like a release and you'll find it easier to start getting rid of more and more you don't need. Over time you'll also find you enjoy collecting for one category more than others and can maybe downsize or get rid of the others.
The garage looks good keep all best bits and only get new bits if selling something, Hv a games room for all your games and consoles once I go beyond those two rooms should be looking to chuck rest or auction off so doesn't get too outta hand
Good luck to you and well done for sharing these thoughts as you wont be alone in having them. Personally i cant empathise as I have no attachment to things. However i do have a hoarder in my family and can confidently day you are not a hoarder. As you said in your video, its scraps of paper, packaging for things, free stuff from magazines etc. But on top of that, they dont think theu have an issue. The fact you're asking these questions suggests its not a hoarder issue but an attachment issue. Perhaps pick 2 or 3 categories of things that you have strongest attachment to and collect just those. Sell the rest to fund. As others have said, redesign the stuff in the back drop as it doesn't look great at the moment and just looks like an unorganised pile. Good luck though
First of all - Big fan of the channel Ian and have been watching you for around 2 years. I think if you were to rewatch yourself back in this video, its very clear that you know what 'you' want to do, its just knowing how to implement that. I also wouldn't be too hard on yourself, we are all different and don't feel as though you need to give yourself justification for keeping something. I appreciate space sounds like it may become an issue for you, but perhaps being more structured with it will help? For me, my channel is all about metal detecting. I have found coins worth £750+ plus, but like you I cant and wont part ways with them. Anyway, im waffling.. do what is right for you mate, all the best. Jake
I love collecting daleks, transformers, retro games, halo, sonic and a few other bits game figure wise and sometimes Pokémon cards but I realised that if I their not in my view or atleast boxed all together did I really care about keeping them around to begin with so recently I’ve been clearing out the wardrobe in my room that was just holding the most random of stuff I’d never use and sold it off to eBay I cleared space feel better because I’m more orgainised and I got abit of money for it!
I was a bad hoarder. I kept the cardboard inner tubes from toilet paper for years.i had loads of them. In my head I was gonna use them. I use to find it hard to throw out used wrapping paper. When it comes to toys I have loads in the attic. They were mine as a child. My daughter has out grown them now but I can't throw them away. So I know exactly how you feel.
I have stuff in my attic that's in boxes from when I lived in my previous house. The boxes haven't even been opened. Iv lived in my house 12 years lol. I know as soon as I open it though I won't be able to throw the stuff away.
I think the point is we all get to a point where we have over done it and collected to much stuff. But now it's time for a clear out are you ready to be ruthless and get stuff cleared. If you are then it's no problem. If you physically can't then yes I would say you on the spectrum of a horder but that's not the end of the world either. Don't be so hard on yourself
I just moved from a 2 bed semi to 2 bed flat - house was wick with gear man, could hardly move. Got to the point where "I might get a fiver for that" Went out the winda! Luckily I had a unit but still had to bin a ton of stuff just for my mental health alone. Now in a tidy flat with no clutter...the clutter bleeds into your mind, affects your mental health no end and the amount of times I couldn't find my car keys, ebay items etc was nuts. Just do it man, it's pretty cathartic, now my unit is cluttered and i have a dedicated ebay room, never again!
I think the conflict is more apparent when you collect the same type of items that you resell, I too get attached to the items I buy to resell on. The feeling of having/owning the item is quite comforting but eventually it becomes too much and you have to thin it out - this gets very much harder the longer you hang onto the items. I can see much of myself in how you're reflecting in your current situation.
What about doing a whole rework of your display Shelving etc cause the worst thing is your gonna sell a load of stuff or get rid of a load and then have a massive regret. You've done a sku system for your eBay stock do the same for your collection. You've have done this collection through your Individual hardwork. I don't think it's a problem I just think a sort and a rework of display and storage will really be a more effective resolution. As your going the op ugh it you may find things you can part with 👍👍 great content as always
there is a fine line between hoarding and reselling but it's better to have too much stock than not have enough stock if you enjoy your collection and takes you back to the past, you can always resell it in the future
Your right keep what you really need and think what’s you don’t really want I would sell the card Pokémon card today having a mental connection to things and letting it affect your mental health “upsetting you” is not a great place to be in. Let it go That my view. If you think I’m talking crap no worries But hope you get through it. All the best. Shaun
Amazing video that I can relate to. Would love to chat with you about my experience and could maybe help. I live not too far from you. But it will get better if you make it get better. Because you have a lot of interests your collecting will never end as it's impossible to get everything.
I have such a problem buying cameras. I have more in the unopened death pile probably enough to last a year I do not need to buy more but I do . And I keep doing it. I’m just going to have to sell stuff cheaper, multiple platforms and get the money in rather than out. Throughly recommend a quick books account, connecting an account AB you’ll see how much you are spending on stock
I used to keep loads of things I found and now I have one shelf and that’s it. Theres a strategy with minimalists to take a photo and get rid in whatever way you choose. You’re unlikely to even look at the photos again
have u thought of redesigning your garage as theres more room in there than your working with better shelving would mean u could display more . but what ever u do think long and hard on what u get rid off in your collection. i got rid of all my subbuteo standium and flood lights teams so miss them. i think we are all hoarders inside so your not alone. and i have to say your youtube back drop looks amazing. drop them thumbs up guys and girls its free and really helps this amazing channel
I have different items to what you have but I have a very similar problem. For a while now, I've worried that I've become a hoarder. I originally swore that my stuff was only going to be in my 2 spare bedrooms, however, they are both full and I have things in my living room, kitchen, my bedroom and the little room next to my back door. I dream of a loft conversion . . .
My house is starting to resemble a hoarders house also. I have a pile of doom that just gets bigger, I cant face sorting through it or listing it, too good to dump, to valuable to take to charity. I forget what is at the bottom of the pile of doom, its been there that long.
Like people have said Ian not a easy video to make....are you unhappy at the moment and feeding your collection to fill in some missing gaps.... certainly worth investigating. Best of luck wish you all the best and a great video
I think when the collections start to infiltrate the home, certainly in terms of volume and repetition of the same item, I feel it’s heading the wrong way. Memories and nostalgia are fine and important to us in different ways. New memories and experiences with the money that’s sat there would be my motivation. Also you could perhaps do a little good by supporting a local charity or people in need with some of the proceeds. You speak well so you could help others. Good luck.
Yep, I started collecting in 2000, now a hoarder, my quantity is crippling, I want to shift it, but all seems to have a value to me, however small. All the best......
Are there any toy shows you can go to, to sell some of the items? Just like Froggy Flips over in the US. No point putting them in a standard auction because you won't get much money for them. My brother and I am in the process of sorting out all of our junk. I managed to get rid of a lot of things in auction and it felt great when it was out of my life. Try and create bundles of items and sell them as bundles because you'll free up some room. Decide on what you're going to collect going forward and what you need to move on. It is tough deciding on what stays and what goes, but you're just going to need to be harsh on yourself for a while and try and emotionally detach yourself from some of the items. Good luck!
I’ve become addicted to charity shops , I can’t stop buying stuff to resell , I spend all my spare time going to different areas etc , but this week I stopped, it took over my life , I am going to sell what I have, wait till it goes down to a reasonable level then rethink
Best video I’ve seen in about two years from anybody tbh
Great idea!
You’ve said it for me 👍 So well done on being vulnerable and addressing this Master of Pieces 🌟
@@ajg5585 sweeping statement
@@ajg5585Personally I think it's the collecting that leads to hoarding. I myself am a reseller but have absolutely no attachment to my items. For me they a purely a product to make more money. I also enjoy the thought that the people I sell to like what I provide even though to myself the item is worthless. That way when my stock levels become too high I have no problem holding back on the sourcing untill I'm back down to a manageable stock level
Also easy to fall into the trap. Think things in the garage looks quite silly for a grown man
Are the boys allowed to touch these? Best of luck Ian what ever you decide.
Comes to us all. We can't keep everything sadly, unless we have a massive house. Think its time to say goodbye to a load
Personally “hoarding” or collecting things that are “alternative investments”
Likes of the retro games / consoles (some toys) is fine to go up the attic for a Rainy day “retirement fund”
But for sure the likes of the rescue bots etc, just list & get them gone.
Ideally if you are collecting you want to be able to display your collection rather than having it tucked away in the attic
The fact that you are talking about a problem is a start. Always here for you.
How much is your Nan? Asking for a friend
@@dhsugarblade I’m sure we can sort a deal out.
So glad you addressed this subject, its something at the back of all our minds, until we are forced to face up to it. Really appreciated, thanks 😊
Fair play to you, Ian, for making this video. I have always had the collector thing in me, too. It's a constant battle. Good luck.❤
Brilliant video, just great 😊 well explained and think we all get what you’re talking about. Keeping it real and relatable thank you 😊
Ian, I know and feel everything you mentioned in this video, I'VE ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME!
Hello Ian
There is a difference between hoarding and memories
Memories bring good feelings and nothing wrong with holding on to something that reminds you of a prominent time in your life.
Wife's always ruin it
I completely agree with this.
Thank you. I think this is a video I'll remember.
Good luck
I can relate to everything you say in the video Ian….I wouldn’t have let that micro machines set go though,it was a beauty 🤣
Hi Ian
Don't be too hard on yourself, it's easy to run out of space when collecting retro toys/figures etc. Maybe just decided to collect a couple of your favourite, most nostalgic toy lines and let the others go. I just collect Batman toys /figures now and still most of them are in the attic out of sight 😅
Keep your chin up mate, you will sort it.
Take care Ian
Glad you can talk about it that’s the first step
I've lost a few things as well. Even stuff that's sold I've sometimes had to cancel as a result so try and put a note on the SKU as to where it is.
Great video Ian I could see this video was hard for you to make and you have some fantastic pieces don’t be embarrassed mate 😢you got this 👍
The garage looks good keep all best bits and only get new bits if selling something,
Hv a games room for all your games and consoles once I go beyond those two rooms should be looking to chuck rest or auction off so doesn't get too outta hand
Jake
Great video, thanks for sharing with us 👍
I love collecting daleks, transformers, retro games, halo, sonic and a few other bits game figure wise and sometimes Pokémon cards but I realised that if I their not in my view or atleast boxed all together did I really care about keeping them around to begin with so recently I’ve been clearing out the wardrobe in my room that was just holding the most random of stuff I’d never use and sold it off to eBay I cleared space feel better because I’m more orgainised and I got abit of money for it!
Great advert for selling the backlog up sure some one will want it ?
What about doing a whole rework of your display Shelving etc cause the worst thing is your gonna sell a load of stuff or get rid of a load and then have a massive regret. You've done a sku system for your eBay stock do the same for your collection. You've have done this collection through your Individual hardwork. I don't think it's a problem I just think a sort and a rework of display and storage will really be a more effective resolution. As your going the op ugh it you may find things you can part with 👍👍 great content as always
there is a fine line between hoarding and reselling
but it's better to have too much stock than not have enough stock
if you enjoy your collection and takes you back to the past, you can always resell it in the future
I'd happily listen to your prices on the retro gaming stuff....
Your right keep what you really need and think what’s you don’t really want I would sell the card Pokémon card today having a mental connection to things and letting it affect your mental health “upsetting you” is not a great place to be in. Let it go That my view. If you think I’m talking crap no worries
But hope you get through it. All the best. Shaun
Amazing video that I can relate to. Would love to chat with you about my experience and could maybe help. I live not too far from you. But it will get better if you make it get better. Because you have a lot of interests your collecting will never end as it's impossible to get everything.
I moved house recently and found boxes and boxes of similar collections which have never seen the light of day. The Mrs wasn’t impressed 😂
A hoarder doesn't display what they buy!
A collector displays there stuff and theres nothing wrong with that! You can never have enough toys Ian 😊
such an honest video - hope you sort it out fella
mate i feel your pain were collecters for a reason we love it 👍
I have such a problem buying cameras.
I was the same I have just sold about 7k worth of pokemon stuff as I now realise memory's are more important than having stuff
You have took the first step witch is the hardest
Good luck!
I paused the video at about 20 seconds to come and comment that, so far, it looks quite likely!
I’m glad in not the only one
I’ve become addicted to charity shops , I can’t stop buying stuff to resell , I spend all my spare time going to different areas etc , but this week I stopped, it took over my life , I am going to sell what I have, wait till it goes down to a reasonable level then rethink
