I went to the exhibit and was second in line. Didn’t want to risk copping it online

I don't blame you getting there early to cop. It's worth it if you like KAWS. Keeping or selling?

ChrisCataluna it’s worth it. I’m slowly getting into art, so I figured why not. I don’t plan on reselling it because I’d regret it. I plan on getting more figures soon tho

I to drove in from Austin. Got there at 8am, was around 20th in line. Only wish I wore thicker socks. Was way to chilly.

To pricey for me but your video made me like it more. I took a look at the add to cart button but didn't press it.

It's a cool toy. Though, like you said, it's pretty pricey. I'm debating on if I can even justify the price point.

Deeeyyyymmm! I was thinking of copping one for personal but it was very expensive. Likely the missus will not allow me unless I have a very good excuse 😅

Don't. You have priorities. Also, there are other more affordable figures in his collection. This is a cool piece, but I wouldn't pay more than retail for them.

Yo! I was able to cop the KAWS Open Edition: CLEAN SLATE figure. They came out on December 9th, 2018 via the KAWS x The Modern Museum of Art Fort Worth. They actually sold on on the website in 5-minutes. They came in Grey, Brown, and Black. What do you think about these $480 toys?
There’s another release of these this Wednesday, December 12, 2018!
    Box Dimension:
    W8.5” x H15.5” x L9”
    Weight (Box w/ figure)
    6.2lbs.

i watch these reviews, etc.. does anyone know why the XX's? I'm not asking because I'm not aware I'm asking because it seems like there are a lot of hypebeasts that have gotten into kaws buying just to buy for aesthetic not understanding the who what why...not its not deep or even profound but there is a reason/purpose beyond sneakerheads getting into art and consuming as much kaws, Takashi Murakami and hebru Brantly as they can but i believe reviews should have much more substance to them especially for collectors who are genuinely serious but new and unsure, this was kind of point less basically we learned from the content creator that the vinyl was not cheap compared to a funko pop... well a funko pop and what is produced by Medicom are two complete variations in materials and quality control. Now not all Medicom pieces are perfect many kaws pieces especially now with open editions do arrive with flaws, damage etc..
but for the most part they are made well but serve a purpose. Before the open editions Companions were released usually as a collaboration or as a reappropriation in the form of another character, and most were made covering there face in shame which was satire for the original characters re-appropriation. This particular piece was to showcase a companion with its children taking on the real-life aspect of brian (kaws) and Julie (his wifes) two young girls. each companion served a purpose in and of itself but not many seem to understand this. I think collectors should go back to kaw's roots and learn more about his come up to where he is now today, there are a few great interviews and reads out there if you can find em, you just have to look. All that he learned from Barry Mcgee, his days doing street art and more importantly his ad disruptions, and a collaborative effort with the likes of "Pushead" whom some will know from the album cover art of Metallica. Another is Hajime' Sorayama whom some may also know from vintage style Sony ad's in the 80's although he is well known for so much more, even sony's Aibo electronic pet dog to name another familiar piece. he is noted for the No-Future companion which was one of kaws' first metal sculptures and came in both chrome and gunmetal in editions of 500 pieces, although it was noted that most kaws vinyl pieces were editions of 500 or 1,000 the only two pieces that were ever numbered were the original CHUM's (Michelin man) and the no future companion on the bottom of the figure. Also the fact that he started out working at Disney and even on the Nickelodeon cartoon" Doug " hence his use os thin and vibrant acrylic paints with machine-like precision it replicates that of cell paint used in cartoon cell paintings/films before being filmed. I believe his earlier ad disruptions were actually painted using animation cell paints if I'm correct. To give the look of a clean and vibrant appearance. Other artists such as Robert Lazzarini have also collaborated making aesthetically appealing but unique representations of the companion.
there is also another piece kaws released mocking the statue of Walt Disney and Mickey at the entrance of Disney world and it's himself with a companion again covering his face in shame/embarrassment it was a pun as well as a homage to his roots as an artist, plus the notion that the original companion is actually Mickey mouse with crossbones and X X.
anyway this was not meant to speak ill of the reviewer but to note that there was not much of a review on the piece itself which i continue to see all too often as of late.. a little due diligence and you will enjoy the art even more as you learn to like it beyond its aesthetic appeal and not for the hype, or the cool factor or the.. I need it, or I have to have it, I remember the days when there were no flippers and you could go onto kaw' site and just purchase a companion or a bendy and for much less than what the open editions cost now. I remember purchasing my darth vader and stormtrooper from toytokyo for retail price and there were plenty as well as Pinocchio when it was released, I also collected the bounty hunter collaborative pieces he did were you opened the belly to retrieve and place in the hand of the BH the decapitated head of Brian (kaws) himself.
even the open edition of passing through had a much larger version released in a limited quantity I would say with confidence approx a thousand, it was almost as tall as the original companion standing roughly 15" and retailed for about $300 now sells for $3,k+ just because of the hype, well there are other factors, but Astroboy, resting place, just to name a few could all be purchased for about $350-$400 around 2013-2014 just about 3-4yrs ago now you cannot find or purchase them for less than a few grand, anyway this is just a point to state that more should be put into discussing the art and the piece itself and if you want to do a review take a few minutes to do some research and not just compare the quality to that of funko pops. The figure actually has compressed sand-like substance inside of the feet/legs to create weight and balance, the 4ft companions also have this as well as metal structural innards and are very heavy, some started to develop what is known to seasoned collectors of his work what we called the "lean" becuase of the manner in which they were produced and manufactured. none the less for anyone more interested in the art behind the art so to speak, take some time to read some old interviews in magazines and other various publications if you can. Th ebooks are nice to have for a good read and refference but they are a lot more refined and cleaned up not as raw and natural as the older material. This will give some insight into the pieces everyone tends to go crazy over or must have!!! if you must have it!! learn why first.
