- ‘Devil’ has always been a material which spur an imagination of many composers, and Franz Liszt (1811-1886, Hungary) wasn’t an exception.
He was a literary enthusiast as well as a great musician. He enjoyed to write a music based on some serious theme like Dante or Faust.
‘Mephisto Waltz’ is also based on a story about Faust. Unlike the Symphony Faust, however, it didn’t derive from the Goethe’s ‘Faust’, but a Lenau’s poem.
The music depicts a person being dictated, and enticed by Mephistopheles in a pub.
