    One of my students told me that her classmates are doing their dissertation comparing performance in noise with Apple AirPods to traditional hearing aids. I will make sure to forward the results to you once they get them.

    Took me several trip to get better measure for background noise supplements speech-in-noise to ensure I hear minimum of 70% if not 100% in challenging situations that can withstand somehow.
    Oticon OPN S1 generally is very loud somehow does okay in background noises if tuned properly as accordingly. 👍

    Dear Dr. Cliff, you definitely need to make a good video on channels and how they affect pricing/performance. For instance, Phonak does not provide many channels, limiting to 20 at most and Oticon have hearing aids models with over 50 channels. This is an important question.

    Hi Dr. Cliff. I recently got fitted for a new digital hearingaid - Signia Motion 7 primax. I've a severe hearing loss and volume is key. That is, I've a conductive hearing loss. Believe it or not, my last hearing aid was in 2009 and the model was in '05. :( Yes, it was a powered hearing aid.
    I've been visiting your channel to be better informed on what I'm getting into. I do have some questions related to background noise. My aid has a user volue range of 1 to 16 with a default of 8. I'm n a quiet home. For some reason, I can totally ower the user volume to 1 and still hear your video. How? Yes, I'm also discovering that my aid seem to know when I'm by a mic and speaker system and uses the telecoil and I don't have to do anything. NICE! I do up the volume when I'm in a car and use focus listeninng when talking to a friend with a soft voice. How long does it take for the algorithm to learn what's needed?

    I was tested less than a year ago and sure enough my hearing loss is classic according to the chart. I found out my medical insurance would pick up a nice portion of my hearing aids cost. I was fitted with the top of the line model of a very popular brand. I asked the place to program one of the three settings for reducing background noise as much as possible. After 8 months I want to throw these $3,000.00 pieces of crap in the garbage and be like my dad -refuse to wear hearing aids ever again. I am now starting all over again though I did write a 'courtesy' letter to the hearing aid company asking them for any suggestions before I throw in their towel. I am now on a quest for directional hearing aids, the best ones I can find. Looking for suggestions and taking my time. Thank you for reading this.

    Thanks, Please do a video (or 2) on sports and hearing aids, I imagine out in Phoenix you have a lot of patients that do sports and can't hear :- ). My focus is running - ear sweat, swimming - waterproof and biking (wind noise). I would like to get in the ear hearing aids. I recognize that this is pretty extreme but even hiking (say climbing Camelback Mt (when I lived there)) will have me soaked in sweat.

    In your opinion, are there any hearing aids with effective directional microphones available? I am assuming from your comment at the end of the video that a remote microphone helps more than "...even the best hearing aid in the world programmed perfectly." that your answer will be "no". My experience is that digital noise reduction doesn't help me as much as I would like. Good explanations, as always. Your explanation of "channels" helped me understand that concept better than my previous attempts.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are good hearing aids with good directional microphones, but none of them will be as effective as a good remote microphone.

    I had a hearing test because I have a very difficult time understanding people in noisy environments, but the test was all in silence, so it showed no hearing loss. I told the ENT and Audiologist that I specifically can’t hear when there’s background noise, but they said that’s “normal” and that hearing loss is measured in a perfectly quiet environment. It’s really frustrating to not understand people and not be able to follow a conversation when it seems like no one else is struggling to follow. Is there really nothing I can do for this?

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't know where to start with this one. Just because you test "normal" it doesn't mean that you can hear "normally" in background noise. The reason we have a variety of speech-in-noise tests is to identify if your difficulty is increased with noise present. There is even research that indicates that the majority of individuals with normal hearing and difficulty in background noise can received significant benefit with low-levels of amplification with hearing devices.

    • @missalwayswrite
      @missalwayswrite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doctor Cliff, AuD Thanks for the reply! Yeah, all the tests they did with me were in silence, even though I said I’m fine in quiet environments. A friend thought I should get a second opinion, but then Covid happened and we couldn’t go anywhere anymore, so I’ve just been waiting.

    I have the Oticon OPN S2 hearing aids. If there is a fan or motor running my speak recognition takes a backseat. If a house fan is on watching television is useless to me as all I hear is the fan. What adjustments if any are possible? I feel like I wasted my money on these aids.

      It sounds like a programming flaw. There are programs within the hearing aid that can be added to help you with background noise. You would have to switch it manually by clicking buttons or using your phone
