- San Diego Zoo Owens Aviary and the Aviary Trail
Today we will trek through the Aviary Trail and finish up at the Owens Aviary. The Aviary Trail houses 22 Aviaries with roughly 40 species of birds. First up are three cages home to Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise. This Aviary was designed specifically for these birds and the Zoo itself has had a very successful breeding program for these birds.

The Second part of our journey takes us into the Owens Aviary. Towering at nearly 82 feet this is one of the world's largest walk-through aviaries. Built in 1937 it is home to around 200 tropical birds representing 45 species native to Southeast Asia as well as Australia. The Southeast Asian Forest represented here is full of foliage, flowers and of course birds. Several feeding trays are located close to the walkway railings giving us great spots to see these beautiful birds up close.
When birds are introduced to any of the aviaries at the San Diego Zoo, they spend their first days in a acclimation cage or "Howdy cage". Here the resident birds can check out the newcomers through the mesh, and the new birds can get a feel for their new home. This helps to minimize stress levels.
The bird species we can find here include:
White-eared Bulbul
Wompoo Fruit-dove
White-Naped Pheasant-pigeon
Chinese Hwamei

Chestnut-breasted Malkoha

Hi ~ my friend ~😄😄😄
Have a nice day 🙏💕💕
Have a great day and thanks for watching!!
Okay, now I know what that area is called. Thanks! I remember in the 90s it opened as “Wings of Australasia”.
I did not know it was called that!
fun fact about the two black cockatoos. They have been at the San Diego zoo for at least 35 years. I grew up going there and feeding them sun flower seeds lol!! The female fell in love with my dad, and we would always joke hey let’s go see your girlfriend when we would go to the zoo. Before they moved the birds, we could walk into the zoo and by the time we would hit the bats she would hear my dad’s voice and start squawking like crazy. It had been about 7-8 years since I’d been back, but I went back of November of last year to tell her my dad had passed away. I know we’re not supposed to touch the animals at the zoo, but I’ve formed a special bond with that damn bird over 39 years of my life. It’s awesome getting to spend time with a wild animal that lets me stick my fingers in its beak and rub under its feathers. My dad actually tried to buy the bird from the zoo lol! Just so you know it was 250,000 as a starting offer lol! I wish I had the money to dedicate a new enclosure for my dad in his memory for that bird. She was genuinely in love with that man.
Thanks for showing me the birds. I really appreciate it.
What a wonderful memory, thank you for sharing. I'm so glad that zoos give lasting stories and memories.
I never knew that the black cockatoos had been at the zoo that long. I'll have to go back and visit them again soon.
Thank you for watching! Hope you find safe travels.
So many beautiful birds of all shapes, sizes and colors in so many natural exhibits. The aviary is stunning. Thanks for all the information.
Agreed! San Diego had done a fantastic job with their bird exhibits, it's a great place to bird watch. Thank you for watching!
I love the variety of birds
They have a fantastic collection. I could spend a lot of time in the Owen's aviary.
Beautiful birds! You got some great footage of them.
Thank you! Lots of beautiful birds!
Best exhibit to bird-watch! If I work there, I would like to build a new exhibit for Anne the martial eagle that I drew 2 years ago! Flickering Iberomesornis!
Agreed, it is the best place to spot birds! I'll have to figure which video to add the eagle trail on, they have some nice habitats in that area as well.
Can you do the San Diego zoo Africa rocks/urban jungle
Yes I can! I'll work on those over the course of the next few weeks.
Owen's Aviary was closed when we visited last July :(
Ugh, that's a shame. It's one of my favorite bird watching areas. Hopefully, it will be open next time you visit
