    His theory is absolutely on point. The things that I had noticed similarly as him were:
    Jorah persuading dany way too much to go with him to asshai.
    Jorah trying his best to get viserys killed by making no effort to defuse any situation and creating more issues.
    And Varys saying that aegon had been shaped for ruling since birth as if dany was just a pawn.

    I'm not sure Viserys finds Dany so unattractive:
    "Viserys lusted for his father's throne, but *he lusted for Daenerys too*, and was loath to give her up. The night before the princess wed *he tried to steal into her bed, insisting that if he could not have her hand, he would claim her maidenhead.* Had I not taken the precaution of posting guards upon her door, Viserys might have undone years of planning."

      I really did get the impression Illyrio made that up. I think Illyrio benefits by portraying Viserys as a replicant of the Mad King - someone who needed to be cut down before getting a chance at destruction. As Preston more or less points out, when talking to a Westerosi (like Tyrion) who asks Illyrio about Viserys, Illyrio can point out he was trying to "save" the free cities from the destruction of the Dothraki (Illyrio benefits by having the tributes paid to the Dothraki when they call diverted to Illyrio) by wedding Dany to Drogo and leading them to believe there is something they benefit from in going to Asshai. Meanwhile Viserys was intent on unleashing 10,000 Dothraki screamers on the Seven Kingdoms in times of relative peace (this was prior to the War of the Five Kings). The reality is of course that he's the one who gave Viserys the idea and Viserys was ironically, destructive enough to accidentally prompt Khal Drogo to do it. So in the scene with Tyrion, Illyrio tells half of the truth about his Aegon scheming (because Tyrion knows, or is soon to know, about Aegon) and portrays Daenerys and her relationship with her brother in a negative light (she's probably a bit crazy because she used to be molested by her insane brother).
      The other thing is that the scene Illyrio is talking about in your quote is the night before the very first Daenerys POV chapter in AGOT. Although she acknowledges that she thought she would wed Viserys as her ancestors have always done, there's no indication that she has ever found him sexually frightening. Indeed she points out that Viserys frightens her when she "wakes the dragon" but Khal Drogo frightens her in a completely different way - because he conceives her to be a savage and she is expected to sleep with him to consummate the marriage.

    You might give Drogo still even too much credit. With his character, how he is, him marrying dany could be no more than to him, picking up an exotic brood mare for status, interest. The most I might attribute to drogo is him thinking dany would birth the stallion. With the way Drogo died, a death that is literally from nothing but his own stupidity and arrogance....this guy's wading pool does not run that deep.

    • @PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin
      @PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      There are lots of exotic slaves who look just like Dany, though. Jorah buys one in Volantis in fact. Drogo had to be interested in something more.

    • @viciouspen
      @viciouspen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Yeah, and Martin makes sure to make mention of that (which I often wonder about), and I even buy the idea that Drogo may have had some level of that idea in his head, but with the rest of his character I don't buy that he did much thinking about it. Look at how he died, the world was so much "his world" that drogo didn't think an infection could kill him. With that type of mindset...I see it more like drogo picking up one more thing to add to his collection. And so far exotic broodmare....it would be that she's an actual targaryen that would make her that, not just the hair and eyes, drogo was more purchasing the ability to say that even he owned targaryen blood.

      Vicious Pen Just because he is unfamiliar with medicine/magic or overconfident in his power, doesn't mean he lacks ambition or smarts. By the time he comes into the story, he is an unmatched warrior who led the largest Khalasar. A guy like that, who has a little bird whisper in his ear that he could fulfill a prophecy and beget the most powerful Khal ever, would not require much prodding. Especially if the prophecy existed in his khalasar since he was born into it.

    • @Altorin
      @Altorin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Preston Jacobs well, those women make themselves up to match the slavebreaker of meereen, but for sure, if it were just companionship and physical attraction it makes no sense, even before volantis was jam packed with daenarys lookalikes he could have found any number of Dothraki women who would clamor to both please him and provide many suitable heirs.
      His attention to dany is no doubt shaped by schemers but its not a matter of attraction. He was setting out to do something special by marrying her, and it only feels fair to take him at his words as he speaks at length about the stallion that mounts the world

    You pieced Rhllors influences that led the hatching of the eggs perfectly! The only difference I feel is that all three dragons were born due to individual Kings sacrifices. Khal Drogo, Viserys, and Rhaego being those sacrifices and Mirri Maz Duur knowingly sacrificed herself to pay for Danys life in the pyre. I'm trying to figure out the influence in Jons story! I'm thinking both Gods meaning R'hllor and The great Other are racing to get him in their corners.

    Why did Illyrio believe that Dany (or anyone for that matter) could hatch a dragon's egg? After all for 150 years Targaryen kings had tried and failed in this not to mention they payed with their lives more often than not.
    And I just remembered: The dragon eggs that Illiryo gives to Dany are turned into stone. They are not living dragon eggs, they are fossilized. Which makes them quite unlikely to be hatched. He should have given Dany new living dragon eggs if he was scheming to hatch them for Aegon.
    It was a good point you brought up about Drogo's marriage pact with Viserys and Illiryo. I agree it cannot be Dany's looks because he had not seen her before. I think Drogo accepted the marriage to Dany because he believed that she is strong since she's the blood of dragon. But it was the crones of Dosh Khaleen who announced their child to be the stallion who mounts the world. Before that Drogo didn't seem to have any ideas of prophecies.

    • @PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin
      @PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      I don't think Illyrio necessarily thought he could hatch a dragon, but people in the Red Religion did. By doing things for them, he wins friends.

    • @sunmoon42
      @sunmoon42 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Preston Jacobs Red religion knows about Azor Ahai but not much about dragons. It's a very strange move to give Dany dragons in the hopes that she will hatch them and that will appease red priests. I mean what if Dany hatches dragons and burns red temples? It is too much of a gamble for a schemer like Illiryo and too much of it is based on unprecedented assumptions

    BR: Poor Theon, he was tortured physically & psychologically in such an inhuman manner. I really hope he has some form of redemption for the terrible mistakes he made.
    SW: lol he doesnt have a dick.
    BR: Jorah may be whiny & passive-aggressive but he has a good heart and he's an awesome warrior and a loyal friend to Dany.
    SW: lol ser friendzone.

    Viserys was the first plan of Doran Martell by his betrothal to Arianne. Illyrio is competing with the Martells thus his plan to get rid of Viserys to put Aegon on the throne. It's all about the Martells Vs Illyrio, at least that's how it looks to me.

    • @Altorin
      @Altorin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the dornish plan as it played out in the books is clearly only a tiny fraction of the full dornish master plan. if the plot he shared with arianne was his whole plan hes an idiot. so if we assume hes not an idiot, a few other things are really interesting. watch preston's video series on the dornish master plan for actual details

    I recently started rereading the books, and noticed something I did not remember from the first time. Danys mother also died in childbirth. I thought she was killed by the mountain or someone. But since her mother also died in childbirth, that makes three main characters (at least) with the same background: Jon, Daenerys and Tyrion. I think there must be some significance to it, even though deaths like these were common then, as I also think they might be the three heads of the dragon. Maybe Tyrian has more Targeryan in him than we know? I think I remember something bout Aerys flirting unappropiatly with Tywins wife some time in the past, but cant remember if this was around the time when Tyrion was concieved. Maybe birhting a real "head of the dragon" kills the mother, or requires a sacrifcie of life. The sacrifice gives the child magic in a way, almost like harry potter... What do you think of it? :)

    @andmarkell 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    If all they needed was blood of kings for the sacrifice, they had no need to involve Drogo. They had a readily available, disposable source in Viserys. Following your recipe, if Illyrio is so clever then he has everything he needs without reaching out to Drogo. Targaryen incubation, check, king's blood sacrifice, check, fire and sorcery, check (volantis tiger faction allies).

    • @MissMdubs
      @MissMdubs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Illyrio didn't expect the dragons to hatch he just wanted drogo to think he needs to go to asshai and clear the dothraki sea for the tiger faction. He actually tell Tyrion that he fully expected Dany to die and was surprised as anyone when she emerged from the desert with three dragons and conquered three cities.
      This changed his plans and annoyed the Golden Company enough that they decided to forego Illyrio and go straight to Westeros without trying to marry Aegon to Dany at all.
      Miri Maz Dur turns up I suspect because she is associated with Marwyn. Later when Samwell goes to the Citadel Marwyn hears about Daenerys and her dragons from Samwell (who has all the latest news because he reads Maester Aemon his letters) and he hightails it out of there to head to Daenerys and become her Maester. He's the one who seems to know a lot about the true history of the dragons and I suspect it was Miri's manipulations that led to Daenerys having the confidence to hatch her dragon eggs rather than the "death must pay for life" rubbish. This is something to convince Daenerys that it is "possible" to hatch the dragon eggs, shifting her mental energy from wishing to determination.

    doesn't viserys have king's blood? he's the son and heir to a king. also, Mirri Maz Dur didn't just arrive at the village, she had to have been there for years, since she talks about healing the people and knowing her neighbors in such detail. i also don't remember if the lamb-men were nomadic like the dothraki, but your theory is riding on them purposefully planting a villiage there to get attacked and having an over-qualified healer just show up.

    That incubation period where they need to be close to a Valyrian could be a situation where the Valyrian must sleep near their egg and dream. Their dreams or general tek would wake and bond with the mysterious egg and it would form into what the Valyrian dreams of same as the egg manipulates what the Valyrian dream about and manipulate their foundational drive and personality.

    6:38 Why does Illyrio need Drogo's blood? If he requires king's blood, Viserys has enough, no?

    • @BravesSheet
      @BravesSheet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Juan Pablo Mina I also don't understand why Drogo is a "king". I mean, yeah, he is a badass fighter and commands thousands of soldiers, but by his blood, he is not a king. The Dothraki don't have persons similar to kings, because for them, you earn your power position by winning battles and not by being born into it. But if the blood is so important, Drogo's blood is just that of a regular Dothraki, not of a "king".

    • @xMOBxMurderCORE
      @xMOBxMurderCORE 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BravesSheet well I think "khal" means "king" in dothraki, so I guess that's what he's going off of

    • @Altorin
      @Altorin 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      his reasoning is a bit post hoc ergo proctor hoc. the hatching of the eggs and the noted requirement of kingsblood lend credence to the fact that he did indeed have the blood of kings...
      maybe kingsblood isnt what you think it is. perhaps the fairly non-magical act of becoming king gives you kingsblood. Drogo became khal of a huge khalasar. maybe thats enough. it might not be a physical property of the blood but rather an essence intrinsic to the sacrifice of kings. The blood is just the Material component of a more complicated ritual that involves the infusion of kingly essence.

    • @bibbiana4Lyfe
      @bibbiana4Lyfe 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BravesSheet people often referred to him as a "Dothraki horse lord" derisively. However he rose to power it is clear he is top of the heap, aka, a king no differently than Rob was King in the North.

    • @juanpablomina1346
      @juanpablomina1346 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BravesSheet Drogo's father was also a khal. Dany uses the word 'khalakka' to refer to her son and translates it as prince (Daenerys V, AGoT). And Drogo is refered to as a khalakka when he was young (Daenerys IV, AGoT). So Drogo is pretty much called a king and I guess his blood would be 'more royal' than, say, Mance's.

    Wow. This is your best video yet. I think you may have figured out all the elements for hatching dragons. All that sun and moon stuff is really interesting. A few questions though. Why do you think it was Illyrio who tried to poison Dany and not Robert? And couldn't they have used Viserys' king's blood instead of Drogo's? They'd need him to lead the Khalasar wouldn't they?
    Anyway, amazing video as usual. Can't wait to hear what you have in mind for the Grand Northern Conspiracy.

    • @PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin
      @PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it was Robert asking Varys asking Illyrio asking the wine seller to poison Dany. :) And I think there may be a difference between inherited king's blood (Targaryen) and self-made man king's blood (Mance, Drogo).

    • @AtticusFresh
      @AtticusFresh 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Preston Jacobs Ah, makes sense about Illyrio. And that's an interesting thought about the quality of king's blood. Makes me wonder if some is more powerful than others. For instance would Stannis' blood be more or less powerful than Tommen's since Tommen is a bastard? Or does the fact that Tommen is actually in power make a difference? And what about Houses who used to be kings? Interesting stuff.
      Whether you're right or not doesn't really matter to me tbh. I think the fun in theories is that they make us think and look at certain aspects of the story in new ways and your theories most certainly do that.

    • @dikuno4327
      @dikuno4327 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AtticusFresh I think that Tommen's blood is in no use for hatching dragon eggs since he is technically "all" Lannister.
      I think Preston's theory if very adequate. I think it actually connects with the Varys and Illyrio conversation witch Arya hears in the red keep. They talk about how Eddard had found a Robert's basterd and how the Lannister/Stark conflict is about to begin and how they are not prepared for it. This conflict may end up in a unification of the seven kingdoms over one king (persumably the winner in the war of 5 kings). This will make it more difficult for them to achieve their plan, because they need westeros to be destabilized so that they can "offer" the people of the seven kingdoms a strong alternative to Robert's (at that time ) weak rule. I may be wrong ofcource, but I also think this theory is one of the best yet.
      Great job man, congrats

    • @sorsocksfake
      @sorsocksfake 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Preston Jacobs
      Isn't the poison plot far more straightforward?
      Illyrio and Varys have a meeting to check their progress, which Arya overhears part of. Varys feels Westeros is about to burst, and Illyrio's gonna have to hurry. Presumably in sending the Dothraki west (at least, the Golden Company later claims that was the plan).
      Next thing, Varys just happens to bring Robert the news of Dany's pregnancy. The result is predictable: Robert has Varys arrange an assassination.
      Presumably Varys is the one who gives the poison (probably not lethal to adults) to the wine salesman who takes the contract, while also informing Jorah of the plot.
      Drogo of course can't ignore an assassination attempt on his wife/child, so he predictably decides to go west at that point. Which was exactly what Varys was saying Illyrio should get done.
      This is Varys' typical game it seems: pushing forward information his target will not ignore, with a predictable response that he favors. Power is whatever people believe.
      Maybe Varys isn't aware of the dragons plot. Or maybe there wasn't one (after all, GRRM supposedly hadn't planned on them, so the overall plot likely doesn't hinge much on them). Illyrio had no realistic hope of the eggs hatching, considering what had been tried before. He might have done it as a long-shot, but not as an integral part of his plan.
      And why would he? Dany didn't need dragons to show she's a targ, she's well enough known. The eggs themselves are a targ symbol already, even if they don't hatch.

    I think I am missing something.... why does Illyrio place Dany specifically in this path to fill the prophecy and not Viserys? I think with Viserys's personality, all Illyrio would have to say is let's go to Asshai and try to hatch some dragons so you can take back your kingdom, and Viserys would be all for it. Instead Illyrio treats Viserys as disposable and treats Dany as the key to prophecy, but why? Can anyone clarify why Dany was the central part of the plans and not Viserys?

    • @BravesSheet
      @BravesSheet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shannon Moffett Maybe it was about his temper at least. Maybe the plan required a good "working relationship" and working with Viserys must be really terrible. Dany seems (at the beginning of the books) much more ok with following orders.

    • @Altorin
      @Altorin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hatching dragons wasnt Illyrio's plan. He wasnt interested in anything but giving Viserys and Dany, along with their eggs, to the red priests and Shadowbinders of Asshai.
      He probably thought the hatching of dragons was a pipe dream, but delivering the components would win him favors with the red priests of volantis and perhaps the tourmaline brotherhood, so that they would support Aegon when the second Aegon's Conquest happens.
      that was his goal. not hatching dragons. They dragons were a political tool.. but it turned out that between dany, drogo and mir maz duhr, they fluked their way into hatching dragon eggs. So the plan altered somewhat.
