- Although "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" was a box office failure, it has its fans and potential to become a franchise. Given Dreamworks's history of cartoons based on their movies, could Ruby Gillman get one too?

It's still a possibility it could have happened remember this ain't the first time where a DreamWorks movie didn't do well at the box-office but wind up getting a TV series

I think a Ruby Gillman tv series would be awesome. want to see more of Ruby taking one high school and the world 🌎, protecting Oceanside from villains and natural disasters, spending time with her familym and friends. Also trying fit in. I want to see more of Ruby in a series on Netflix.

I think "Ruby Gillman" actually would've worked better as a TV series than a movie.
That way we could've spend more time with the characters & get to know them better, and make the series have it's own continuity separated from the movie because I would like to know more about the lore of the feud between the krakens and the merfolk.
Just make Chelsea & Nerissa separate characters because Ruby and her were believable as friends than as enemies.
And have both the krakens and merfolk settle their differences to take down Nerissa (who the merfolk saw as a corrupted leader that needs to be taken down) together.
Could possibly try a bit of a soft reboot. Like "Here's what *really* happened!".

Maybe you're right! Other Dreamworks movies that failed at the box office like Turbo, Peabody and Sherman, and Abominable managed to get their TV Shows!

They better change A LOT of things for the tv show to succeed. They should make Chelsea and Nerissa separate characters. They should make Chelsea and Ruby go through development and become friends. And Connor needs to have SOME KIND of personality. Frankly Dreamworks shows have been pretty low tier. Maybe this could be an exception.
Fun fact: In the trailer ( the one that ruined the movie) when Chelsea first time meets ruby, it didn't go in a positive way. She says that she knows her secret and reveals that she is a kraken hiding as a human and soon everyone will know who you are, showing that she was originally supposed to be cruel and mean toward ruby which would have worked better because then it would have given her friends more screen time like instead of Chelsea seeing the great kraken and finding out it's ruby it will be her friends. They wouldn't understand what Chelsea was saying to ruby but it wasn't nice that one of her friends (I don't know their names) gets angry and argues with Chelsea about what she said to her but the others stop her because it's not a good idea to mess with the popular girl. Then they go after ruby making sure she's alright, they see her running to the library and when they get there, the library was destroyed with an old woman running past them screaming and a great kraken hiding in the trees, they immediately figure out it's ruby, making them even more confused about what's happening. Ruby then runs away, her friends try to call out to her but she wasn't listening so her friends went after her and they caught up to ruby's mother.
Can they actually be allowed to make those kinds of changes?

@@achinthmurali5207 Some like The Penguins of Madagascar series, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, The Tales of Arcadia franchise, and The two Jurassic World series (Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory) are exceptions. Especially that Kipo Oak was almost like a precursor to Ruby Gillman.

If this were to get a TV show, I'm thinking they should do something similar to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in which the show is a separate continuity from the movie. That way, they could incorporate their old idea of Chelsea and Nerissa being separate characters.
Also, I can totally imagine Wendie Malick (Eda from The Owl House) voicing Grandmamah instead of Jane Fonda.
On that part with Brill, I think he was lying to Agatha so that she wouldn't know that Ruby met Grandmamah.

Tbh, a lore reboot wouldn't be a bad idea... as the movie has a TON of good ideas, that just... are never touched on.
A soft reboot would allow for all of that.
Ok I have a lot of things to say here.
1. I definitely would want a TV series and personally would want it to be about Ruby fighting off other sea monsters, as well as the daily lives of the other characters.
2. I don’t know if this counts with the other IP that Dreamworks has given TV shows to, but The Bad Guys are getting a Christmas special for Netflix this year.
3. I’ve seen a photo from Dreamworks All Star Kart Racing and Megamind has been confirmed to be in the game. Also I’d think it be a huge missed opportunity if they didn’t include Turbo. They don’t even have to give him a kart, he can just race on his own.
4. I’d say only the storyboard version with Chelsea’s true form was better than the final cut. It definitely felt like it made more sense.
I've seen some people talk about the possibilities of a RGTK sequel and series, and i agree! As someone who actually really enjoyed the movie, I would love for it to get a sequel and even a series! ❤🐙

Regarding the Brill scene, it actually stumped me the first few times too. But then I realized he's actually covering for Ruby and himself. By this point of the film Agatha is unaware of Ruby traveling in the ocean/visiting Grandmamah. During the seagull scene Brill admits Agatha would 'kill him' if she finds out Ruby's trying to visit Grandmamah. All he has to do is claim he went home empty-handed to ward off his sister's potential anger. Truthfully, I'm iffy about Nerissa and Chelsea being separate. I actually enjoy how Nerissa pretending to be her own daughter just goes to show how truly evil and determined she is.
Maybe Nerissa/Chelsea will be revealed to be a clone of the real Nerissa

I think a Netflix show would be great, you know, there's a lot of sea, a lot of sea creatures to see.
And also, I can't get enough of Ruby (and maybe bring Chelsea into the mix, somehow)
To be honest, I hope they will make Ruby Gillman into a franchise because it has so k much potential...
Unfortunately, because it failed so badly at the box office any more of this IP is probably dead in the water.
Best bet would be a tv show, which happened to Godzilla 1998 but thats a huge maybe

this show has so many ideas like how their ancestor got the kraken powers,they explore the map giving us what the city looks lik. theres so much ideas that can be generated,surely dreamworks wouldnt let this go to waste right?

I think they should do both a show AND a sequel.
The show’s overarching plot could slowly build up to the sequel, perhaps gradually revealing a bigger threat (say, The Leviathan or something similar) Thanos-style that appears in the next movie.
There’s no way a studio will risk losing even more money for a sequel when the original was a massive loss at the box office

I like many found the film very boring, dull, and overall played itself too safe. Other than a couple scenes with Ruby, her family, and Chelsea the film’s script left a lot to be desired.
Especially in comparison to Puss in Boots 2 and even Bad Guys.
The film felt like a straight to DVD from from the 2000’s. It didn’t at all feel like a theatrical film
PS In an interview with Animation Magazine, producer Kelly Cooney Cilella noted that the film had been in development for several years.
Sounds more like development hell IMO

@@trentonallen6965 The film was a gigantic financial failure, it lost Universal tons of money, it’s looking like it’ll lose them around $80 million.
They will not risk losing even more money, even if they had a franchise planned. No studio will make a sequel to a film that lost them money.
Maybe, and that’s a huge maybe it’ll get a tv show or comic but even that’s slim. Considering the overall lack of interest in Ruby as a whole.
Films such as Green Lantern and Power Rangers 2017 had sequels planned but they cancelled those plans because those films also were huge failures at the box office.
I hope this movie gets a sequel and Tv series, wanted to see more characters and Ruby Adventure as being a Kraken and having her grandmother visit a lot, and Ruby and Connor relationship.
Maybe (a big maybe) for a tv show.

The Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken TV series should have a part that Tidal Titan found a powerful weapon, greater than the Trident of Oceanus "the Trident of Poseidon" and brought it to the Kraken royals.

Tidal Titan brought the Trident to the kraken royals, because Davy Jones is after it. But then Jones found the Dark Trident.
I read that sadly because of Ruby's flop, They are firing employees... I don't want to be pessimistic because Ruby Gillman deserves to become a franchise and i hope that this doesn't mean bad news for a sequel/series

Yes!!!! Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken deserves a TV series. When Ruby Gillman meets a new kraken whose been helping her defend the kraken kingdom from other sea monsters. The new kraken would be called "Tidal Titan" or T.T. for short is amale kraken who can turn giant like the girls can, and he has shark-like appearance, like sharktopus. Ruby Gillman would find more krakens like Ty in the Bermuda Triangle.
So your saying ruby and Connor might break up and ruby would meet a male boy kraken that’s about her age and fall in love with him. I love that, I hope it happens on the tv series or the sequels

Another great video! Very informative and in-depth. And thanks for the shoutout in the opening! I'm still hoping we get a series in the future. I'd love to see more of Ruby and her family.
Maybe the potential show could be something like Jake Long: American Dragon or My Life as a Teenage Robot. It could be about Ruby trying to balance her royal duties in the sea with her domestic life at home and in school. An episode could be divided into subplots with subplot A focusing on Ruby's adventures and subplot B on her family or friends. You could introduce new characters like other sea monsters and cryptids that she has to fight. You could even introduce good mermaids or evil krakens to prove Grandma and Agatha wrong. Maybe even a redemption arc with Chelsea/Nerissa where she and Ruby become true friends at the end. Or at least she calls off the war between mermaid and kraken and the two learn to coexist.
Oh please, she tried to kill Ruby take over the oceans. She went full supervillian and did it without any remorse. Maybe make a new mermaid 🧜♀️ to replace her as a hero, but don't give Nessria a redemption arc. I like the idea overall, but Nessira redemption arc, no.
OR they don't continue from the movie and separate the TV series from the movie. It's probably for the best.
They could also bring in the titans Oceanus as the overall Big Bad
The Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken tv series should also have 4 new villains, who are after the Trident of Poseidon. The new villains are quinotaur(5 horned sea bull), the akhlut(whalewolf), the leocampus(marine lion), and the hippocampus(sea-horse).

Actually an animated TV series based on Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken on Netflix sounds like a great idea. I even came up with a funny but clever title: "Ruby Gillman's Kraken' Adventures". Get it!?
If Ruby Gillman does get a TV series I think it should be in 2D.
My reason being that the art style of the movie while enjoyable is also very easy to get into uncanny valley with a smaller budget. That issue isn’t as bad with 2D.
And make it like the rise of the TMNT and Glitch techs.

Well I think they definitely going to make a TV show of Ruby Gilman considering that every DreamWorks movies have their own the TV shows. And if they're not going to air it on television then they're probably going to let Ruby Gilman TV show probably streaming on Netflix or Hulu or Peacock (Croods Mr Peabody & Sherman Trolls and Baby Baby Puss In Boots and Turbo were Netflix show. Madagascar Abominable and Croods Trolls were Hulu shows and there the same show like Trolls and Madagascar were steaming on Peacock on the same date as Hulu) so there might be one hundred percent chance that we might get a Ruby Gilman TV Series streaming on Netflix or Hulu or Peacock.

Hell, Atlantis had a tv show planned after the film but because that too underperformed at the box office it was scrapped and we got that terrible 2003 sequel “Milo’s Return” which was a mashup of what the show would’ve been.

Edit: Also, considered how Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken became a success on Netflix on February 2024, it would probably makes a lot of sense for Ruby Gillman to get its own TV series like other Dreamworks movies that flopped, like Turbo, Peabody and Sherman, Spirit Stallion of the Cimmaron, and Abominable.
For my ideas for the Ruby Gillman Netflix series, I personally want it to be 2D instead of 3D (definitely because of Megamind 2 and its series), I personally want Craig McCracken (creator of Wander Over Yonder) and/or Bill Motz (creator of The Ghost And Molly McGee) to develop the series, I personally want Dreamworks to partner up with Combo Estudio (studio behind Rick And Morty and Hazbin Hotel), Snipple Animation (studio behind Jellystone!), and Jam Filled Entertainment (studio behind The Loud House and DC Superhero Girls) to animate it, I personally want all of the original voice actors to reprise their roles as their respective characters, and I personally want the overall vibe of the series somewhere between My Life as a Teenage Robot and American Dragon Jake Long. The new weapons are the Poseidon's Trident 🌊🔱 and the dark Trident 🌑🔱, and the new villain who seeks out the dark Trident 🌑 🔱 is named "Davey Jones". Jones is planning to use the Trident's dark power to turn every sea creatures into horrible and terrifying sea monsters, and build a new army. about that Brill scene, I was also curious about that and made a reddit post about it, most people who responded thinks it might be Brill trying to cover for Ruby. I kinda find that hard to believe.
Brill doesn't seem like the kind of character that would be capable of thinking that deeply, nor does he seem like he would be able to lie to Agatha like that. It was even established earlier in the move "that guy can't hide anything."
Do you think that scene being "Brill covering for Ruby" a possibility or does it seem unlikely to you as well ?

I’m starting to doubt what(or who) Grandmamah wanted Brill to come back with had anything to do with Ruby. Especially since Grandmamah knew Ruby would come back to the kingdom voluntarily.
Frankly I’m also surprised Brill didn’t let it slip that Ruby went to the kraken kingdom without Agatha knowing.
Ok so I just got another comment about it. The “covering for Ruby” part means Brill was lying to Agatha and Grandmamah didn’t “hit the roof” at all.
But if that’s the case, why did Brill need to return to the Gillmans? And he still managed to keep his mouth shut about Ruby visiting Grandmamah.

Davey Jones wears a scabbard on his left side of his belt with a scary looking black ⚫ and green 🟢 Cutlass sword 🗡️ with serrated edge that looks like a sea serpent. The males has same powers as female giant krakens like laser breath or "water energy blasts", great strength, powerful roar, super speed, camouflage, body armor, Feral mind, combat skills, glowing ink blasts, and Trident 🔱 mastery. The kraken knights 🐙🦑🌊 have a tattoo on their chests of a Trident 🔱.
Davy Jones uses dark powers to turn the quinotaur into a sea minotaur, the akhlut into a werewolf, the hippocampus into a itchyocentaur, and the leocampus into a sea werelion. But Tidal Titan uses his power turn them back to normal.
The 4 sea monsters (quinotaur🐟🐂 a.k.a. 5 horned sea bull, leocampus🐟🦁 half lion and half fish, hippocampus🐟🐎 a horse sea monster, and akhlut🐋🐺 a wolf-orca hybrid) were not always evil. They were once normal sea creatures, until Davy Jones enslaved their minds and made them into the evil sea monsters they're now.
In my opinion, a potential “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” sequel should play on more complex themes than the first movie:
1. The sequel could take place 1-2 years after the events of the first movie, where Ruby has managed to juggle her responsibilities as a straight-A student, a local celebrity and the protector of Oceanside and she eagerly awaits for the day of her graduation.
2. But things won’t go as smoothly as she would have hoped: Her friends would inform her that they wouldn’t go to the same college as her, which would mean that Ruby has to deal with an incoming physical separation from her Squad and Connor, which is going to have her feeling unsure as to what her future is going to be like.
3. To add a little more drama to the plot, Poseidon, the King of the Atlantean Empire, would make an appearance as the mastermind behind all of the previous monster attacks Ruby and her family intercepted and he would abduct Agatha and Grandmamah in order to use them as the key part to his master plan.
4. Poseidon would be a corrupt copy of King Triton from “The Little Mermaid”, who lost his divine status because of the fact that he abused his power to serve his own purposes. Feeling deprived of what was rightfully his, he would seek a mythical treasure that could restore his full power.
5. The Well of the Seas would also play a crucial role in the sequel, further explaining its importance to the oceanic world.
6. With Ruby and the male members of her family being faced with impossible odds on this perilous journey, she would have to enlist Chelsea’s unwilling help, which would make for some pleasant comic relief, thanks to their constant bickering.
7. During their quest, Ruby and her team would come across her presumed dead grandfather, Norrin Gillman, who would not only be a Giant Kraken (a considerable oddity among male Krakens) with the unique ability to heal, but he would also be a shell-shocked veteran who turned into a devout pacifist and the sole protector of the Lagoon Sanctuary, a mystical place that would be created to accommodate all sorts of peace-loving creatures and survivors from the Great Kraken War.
8. His personality would be that of a rather quirky but harmless and wise grandfather (sort of Albus Dumbledore, Uncle Iroh and Yoda all rolled into one) that would help Ruby out in discovering the meaning of growing up and evolving.
9. He would also be the only one to know about the creation of the oceans and the other oceanic creatures, as well as what the treasure Poseidon is after would be.
Yes it should get a series!

Tbh... I feel like a show would be a bit... soso. As, the movie REALLY shot a LOT of great ideas down, to make the movie worse on purpose... and MANY of those ideas would have been amazing to explore. There's SO MUCH fun they could have done... but as the script change kinda messed up... as, even with prequel stuff: They messed that up. Like: Making Chelsea Nerissa, instead of Nerissa being another character. So... could see it being good, still. But... it has ruined a lot of plotlines with the forced changes.
The original story would have been SO much better for an episodic story cartoon tbh. Plus, I mean: Bit of a unrelated side note but: The magic clothes in the final movie DID turn out to be corporate meddling xD Which, if you ask me: Would also have been better for a series. As, you have a recurring gag right there. But, perhaps a bit too late to fix plotholes like that now...
I just wish the dumb magic clothes wasn't in there... it just makes no sense. As like... we see TONS of nude krakens. So... it's not like in ex: Kipo, where they'd have to put SOME effort into cover up her bits... yet: Both just, magic clothes. (despite showing said clothes get destroyed)
As for mermaids: I mean... we kinda have mythology that explains where more mermaids come from. *Cough, cough*
Though, I'd find it more interesting if they were like whiptail lizards tbh. That said: Elves are also immortal. But they find a way to population control. So, not a real issue.
But, as said prior: Would have been a better story if Chelsea was actually Nerissa's daughter as planned, as well as Ruby's love interest. Though, the last part I am biased on. As: Story would have been just as solid if only friends. As, the focus would be on "our moms lied to us".
Plus: The lame excuse of "not wanting blood on her hands"... they could *literally* have gone with "Nerissa died going after the trident. The classic cartoon way of letting a villain unalive themselves without the hero "doing it". OR: Do both. Have Nerissa actually be alive, and trick Chelsea, using her as a pawn like she used Ruby. And/or surprise reveal. And then possibly have Nerissa unalive going after the trident again. Or hey: Ursula homage xP
It just really sucks how the studio intentionally harpooned the movie, thrice. Similar to a Goofy Movie. I'd love for it to bounce back... bit I dunno... so many of the corpo changes makes it harder/worse.
now ya see i really love this is film and really and really disappoints me when someone gives this film a bad name regardless on its results. I wonder right now as I was writing/typing this comment think the villain could have worked well if chelsea and narrisa were separate characters. And Chelsea was just a henchwoman to narrisa. That used the trident to revive her only to find out that chelsea did this fearing for the saftey of her kind picturing narrisa as a hero only to to team up with ruby to finally get the message.
If not then then still keep her as a villain and possibly have a post credit scene or at the end before the credits a scene that features the red head herself plotting to send in a new big bad sea monster to fight ruby as we only just get to see its glowing eyes and ending it from there.

I hope 🙏 Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken becomes a tv series, because it should have new characters, a new villain, and new weapons. Ruby Gillman finds a team of giant kraken called the "Kraken Knights" fighting together to protect the seas, there are 4 males and 3 females in the group. The males are giant krakens with shark-like appearances "cool shark heads, dorsal fins, spikes at the tips of their tentacle tips, fins on the sides of their arms/tentacles" (Great white shark, great hammerhead, goblin shark, and mako shark) ,and the female are regular giant female krakens one is orange 🟠 2nd is blue-green 🔵🟢 and the 3rd is yellow 🟡. The new weapons are the Poseidon's Trident 🌊🔱 and the dark Trident 🌑🔱, and the new villain who seeks out the dark Trident 🌑 🔱 is named "Davey Jones". Jones is planning to use the Trident's dark power to turn every sea creatures into horrible and terrifying sea monsters, and build a new army. Davey Jones is humanoid in appearance with dark greenish scales, sharp fangs, glowing green eyes, two whiskers on his face, he wears a dark red pirate's greatcoat, black pirate hat, black belt with silver buckle, webbed hands and feet, a fin on the back, and a sea serpent tail. I sometimes imagine what it would be like if there is a DreamWorks Nicktoon on Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. So far, there's only 3 DreamWorks Nicktoons. Sadly Nickelodeon and DreamWorks don't collaborate anymore due to the contract for it expiring. But what if Universal and Paramount end up merging? If they do, maybe Nickelodeon and DreamWorks would start collaborating on some DreamWorks Nicktoons again. I miss seeing Nickelodeon and DreamWorks collaborating with each other. Anyway, I hope Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken will become a franchise.
It’s actually Warner Bros. and Paramount that are rumored to be merging. Personally I don’t think it makes much of a difference. Whether it’s Nicktoons or Netflix, DreamWorks makes some pretty good cartoons and I have faith Ruby Gillman would be no exception.

I liked Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken when It first came out. But Know It’s Kinda Eh. The ploy is kinda just Turning red but With Mermaids and Krakens which I love the concept of The Lore of Krakens and Mermaids being Flipped on there heads. But animations takes weeks, months, maybe a year or half a year, story board, test animation dialogue, animating cgi, would take Idk how long.

If they did make it a tv series I would like to see an episode with Ruby's Grandmamama on land in her human disguise as well as her and Agatha making amends with each other.
But Ruby's Grandmama never leaves the ocean.
For some reason I always miss heard the, “mermaids don’t age,” line as only the queen of the mermaids not aging, which would be a characteristic that would help separate her from the others.
Or that the reason why mermaids are so dangerous is because they don’t age, which could affect the ocean ecosystem as a whole.
In the Young Justice series Connor/Superboy mentions that he's not Immortal, that he still ages on the inside, but no matter what he'll always look the same(like 16 Year Old),
So maybe Mermaids live extended lifespans(like how the Ocean Quogue Clam can live to be 500 Years Old) and at some point in their lives their bodies cease to age on the outside but not the inside, so Merfolk would still have a reason for reproduction, not entirely sure it's just a theory.

There are some creatures that don't age in real life such as the "Immortal Jellyfish" (Terratopsis Dohrnni) . . I'd assume predators keep them in check. But that idea doesn't really fit for anthropomorphic creatures. Especially not humanoid ones.
I completely agree with every point you made regarding the storyboards. In the series, I'd love more lore, but most of all - I'd love more underwater adventures, as underwater worlds and stories hold some of the greatest awe and wonder. ^u^
I think it'd be neat if Ruby met a "cecealia/cilophyte", being that they'd be closely related. =) Perfect review! "Rise" was my favorite song. I got a script for the second movie and to what if before the events original movie Agatha got together with the Frederick the Leviathan king and had a half kraken half Leviathan child she laid a egg but took couple of years for it to hatch and when the Leviathan baby named Sal would wonder the ocean when he came out he would be 13 and homeless but also go ocean side high and meet Ruby her friends, and her family and he wonders why Ruby and her mom look just like him and he wonders why he feels a strange connection with them and they show him a tour off the School and later later in the movie he would learn his abilities laser eye, super-speed, body armour stretchy tongue(which he mostly uses to steal food from people plates cause he loves eating so much) able to melt himself to sneak under doors and and into rooms, camouflage(or as he likes to call it invisible since Ruby likes to call her eye beams laser eyes) the ability to grow giant and the ability the make bubble force fields he meets his father while was taking a dive in the ocean and he that Ruby’s mom Agatha was mom and lies that she took the trident away from him and that wiped out the other Leviathans and the him and the rest of his people had to into hiding in a place called Leviathan world in the Mariana Trench there he tells him about his heritage and tells him that only the men in their family can turn into giant krakens and teaches him how to use his powers and slowly but surely turning into a monster he Sal starts as antagonist in the middle of the movie but soon he learns about his father’s treachery and and Ruby, Agatha and Grandmama help defeat the evil leviathan king and later the Gilman’s invite Sal to live in there but not just that but he goes to Leviathan world they make him Their new king
In series Chelsea uses her magic to bring him Bach to life ( don’t ask me how she just can in my version) and they become recurring antagonists for Ruby and Sal.
Ruby and Sal a deuteragonist and they face ups and downs in their relationship but still love each other with all their hearts
Sal personally: he’s lazy greedy Gluten who loves to play video games a eat a lot and hates it when his mom puts him on a diet.
Sal’s Likes: food, Ruby, Basket ball,(rivalry with Sam)Nessie, making fun of Ruby’s crush on Connor, making fun of Ruby’s feet tickling people (especially Ruby and her feet)
Sal’s dislikes: Rules Ruby making fun his over eating and fat, people who overly optimistic like Ruby and Sam’s cousin Sophia, people telling him what to do walking and vegetables basically anything healthy
In season 2 their is a new family moving in to the neighbourhood and the Gilman family really get along with them but the problem is that their leviathan Hunter so the want to stay friends with them but they also must keep the family away from Sal.
The show is based off of the Ghost and Molly McGee you can tell Sal and Ruby have a Scratch and Molly type relationship

I’m only more into Chelsea Van Der Zee, and her story of regret and lies she’s bottled up. But seriously, Krakens were and will always be evil. Mermaids just felt like a dead horse beaten nowadays.
