I totally understand why people didn’t like the very end of the book, but I think I came to accept it by seeing it as Pip purring herself in her personal “prison” and dealing with the consequences of what happened. I wish they explored her feelings on what she had done more instead of her just staying away to keep her friends safe. But I see that she had her own personal punishment, although two years away from friends and family definitely doesn’t fit the crime.

i definitely think the third book was rushed. not that I didn’t enjoy reading it, I just think it could have been done better.
    SPOILERS
1)there was little to no mystery as to who DT was. i personally think it was pretty obvious who was responsible for stalking pip. from the first book Jason was already questionable. if not him there would be close to no one else left for it to really be (if i’m remembering every book correctly!!) I also didn’t like how quickly we got a reveal as to who DT was even though i’d guessed it, the buildup was nothing compared to the first books of the series. not even gonna lie I wanted so badly for it to be Hawkins , it would make sense as to why he didn’t pay more attention to pip asking for help , without blaming it on her mental state
2)Hawkins. his character just sprung into growth at the end of the book. i get it , within the last year he’d been proven wrong by pip on multiple occasions so you’d think his character had a bit of growth when it came to his work but why the fuck did this man suddenly start second guessing himself when it came to pip? there were ZERO ties to her in the end and he still (supposedly) suspects her? on top of that where did he pull that from? we never got to see what lead him to that conclusion cause a pair of headphones damn sure didn’t
3). becca was mentioned multiple times in this book, i’d even argue she was a major character this time around for pip and her growth throughout the series. so i truly don’t understand why we never got too see pip go and visit becca after everything was set in place. it was something that had come up a few times throughout the second part of the book. it may not be important to the story but I think it’d would’ve been a better way to close out the series than the text? but that’s just me
4)the time jump?? though i don’t see an issue with having a time jump, i feel that it was pointless in the end as the entire chapter was just pip explaining what we already knew; she missed her friends and family and she was scared. i know it sounds shallow but the time skip could’ve been used for an epilogue that shows the aftermath of max being found as guilty. i mean what did she tell her parents? her friends? did she ever get help ? small things like that would’ve helped give readers more closure

My opinion on Hawkins “knowing” Pip did it was that he didn’t. He was obviously investigating her headphones but he didn’t actually know she was behind everything, it was just told from Pip’s paranoid narrative and her very very damaged mental state.

I just finished it and definitely have some similar feelings. [SPOILERS]
    [POSITIVES]
I liked that this book brought a lot of aspects and characters full circle and tied back to the first book. I overall I enjoyed the second part of the book better than the first. I liked the faster pacing and how it pulled together a lot of the characters. I wish we could have had the characters included more in the first part. Also the Season 3 teaser was a delicious moment.
    [RANTS]
First off, I'm so glad you brought up the brother seeing DT creeping outside the house and how that was NEVER referenced again, that really bothered me. And I definitely agree that I wish it was two books or had been longer. I feel like we were robbed of some important momments, like Becca Bell deserved to have a scene where Pip tells her about the strangler and who her sister really was and how Andie really did care about Becca. I also think it would have been nice if during Pip's time in self imposed exile she visited Charlie Green in prison. I actually think that meeting would have been more impactful to happen at the end of the book after she has essentially done the same thing as him. And that could have been the moment where Pip really decides if good people can do bad or if a person that has done something bad can be redeemed.
I also wonder that if this book had been broken into 2 books, if we might have gotten a clearer overall story and themes. It does feel like the story and Pip's goals throughout are just bouncing around especially toward the end, like Pip remembering last moment about Billy. Which Pip does try to help him out by talking to Hawkins about some stuff she "discovered" about Jason but most of it Hawkins already knew about. But I do agree that part could have been done better especially since Pip herself wanted the framing to bring everything full circle and Right everything that went wrong.
One aspect that I haven't seen discussed that really bothered me was Hawkins. I had a hard time believing that Hawkins would completely ignore Pip's pleas about the stocker considering his bad track record when he doesn't listen to her. I think realisticly hawkins wouldn't believe her but would assign a cop like Daniel de Silva to look into it. Which actually could have made Part 1 way more interesting. Pip having to work with Daniel, who is her prime suspect for DT. And the fact that Hawkins seems to never be able to entertain any logic on all his cases but suddenly becomes really smart when Pip has commited a crime didn't seem realistic. That whole arc really annoyed me as it was Hawkins' fault that Pip was even in danger because he once again didn't take her seriously. If Hawkins is going to suddenly be a smart detective, I wish there would have been a moment where he tells Pip he's figured it all out but won't change anything as he failed her and the other victims by not believing them.
    [OVERALL]
Overall I wish this book had been two books so more aspects and characters could have been tied up. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if the plot about Hawkins figuring out Pip did it was cut and we could have avoided the melodrama at the end and could have instead tied things up more and focused more on the characters and Pip making a decision on the good vs evil.

      [SPOILERS!]
This comment is so underrated, I agree with lots of your points! I also wanted a scene with her and Becca and another one with Charlie.. I feel like having the first encounter with Ravi, Connor, Jamie, Nat, Naomi, Cara and her family would have been so poignant if it was included. I also noticed the person watching Pip’s house brought up by Josh, and I was immediately suspicious of Jason as soon as I noticed Dawn Bell’s necklace when Pip first bumped into her at the cafe. If Pip went to see Charlie again, I feel like it would give her closure and let her reflect on what she really had done, as she had essentially turned into him.
I also agree with what you said about Hawkins. It just didn’t make sense for him to suddenly suspect Pip when he dismissed her after knowing that she was right in the past.
This book answered many little questions and unknown reasons of the other books but I feel like the ending was a little bit abrupt.. Pip had waited all this time for this and when she finally won, we never really got to see what happened next.
I’m not sure if many people will agree with me on this, but I felt like somehow them putting all of the blame on Max was a bit unfair. It turned into what Elliot had done with Sal, even though I know that Max did horrible things and was not a good person, unlike Sal. For crimes he had committed he definitely wouldn’t have gotten a life sentence, and although he deserves to be put into jail for the terrible things he had done, I don’t think that he deserved to be put into jail for probably the rest of his life. Although I’m happy that Jason Bell is no more and Pip is free, I feel like it was wrong for that to happen to Max.
Overall I really enjoyed the book and it always kept me on the edge of my seat - I can’t believe that these are Holly Jackson’s first books! :)

@@sheilabirling this is so true, especially the part about Pip basically turnung into Charlie, that's an amazing comparison. I really really wish she did get to speak about him because he was such a HUGE part in book 2 and his arrest was so brushed off it bothered me.

I also agree it doesn’t seem right to blame this degree of a crime on Max. Pip really does turn this into a revenge plot.
Pip and Charlie really are the same. And I’m super curious how Charlie’s trial turns out.
I couldn’t believe Pip didn’t just put security cameras up at her house ughhhh it made me so mad.
I’m confused at all the Hawkins hate here. I understand why Pip feels the police aren’t on her side because they don’t believe her, but she also came to them with ABSOLUTELY ZERO SOLID EVIDENCE so how the heck would they be able to do anything, and I thought that Hawkins treated her very kindly and respectfully throughout the whole book while she was just straight up rude to him the whole time, then once Pip ACTUALLY HAD EVIDENCE she refused to show the police or even her parents and I was SO PISSED because Hawkins absolutely would have acted on her behalf had she shown him, I am confident. I also am super confident Hawkins would have been on her side had she went straight to him after escaping her abduction.

    SPOILER AND RANTING ALERT!!!
OMG I AM ABSOLITELY HATED THE ENDING!!!! Honestly I actually really enjoyed the plot. Ik it was very out of character but it also shows how Pip evolved. Anyways, to not make this long, the end was simply horrible. Like OMG I died when Pip left. The ending felt rushed. They jumped 72 days and Pip was still scared (and she doesn't have a single person by her side) then it jumps again to more than a year later, and she is STILL ALONE! Then when Pi and Ravi finally "get back together" THERE WAS NOTHING! Like they were talking about getting married a moment and the next they were out of contact for almost TWO YEARS! Plus how about Nat, Cara Naomi, James, and even Pip and Ravi? How did they feel about the verdict? I know it's obvious but still, it would've felt like closure seeing Pip finally happy (or close to happy) with everyone she loved. How about her parents? Her little brother? She didn't talk to them either. We didn't get to hear a conversation. As for Ravi SHE DIDN'T TEXT BACK!!! Like at least one text back! JUST ONE!!!
    That's all folks.
This is my spoiler filled rant.

So I wanted to say that I honestly agree with u!!!(btw sorry im reallyyyyy late loll) I think that the story just built up to the point where it just collapsed at the end! I need Holly to make a fourth book and show Pip being reunited with her family, her best friends, especially Cara and Naomi which weree like sisters to her! But most of all...RAVI!!! I want to assume, bc Ravi texted Pip, that they r together again now but I need answers in a fourth book! I'm not entirely satisfied with the ending at all- I just love the two of them-PLEASE HOLLY JACKSO FIX US-MAKE A HAPPIER ENDING!!!

  • @julietoewsable

Nailed it!!! I have to agree with your review. I felt very drawn to liking Pip and her boldness to take on the world- but I find myself sad that she has to be so secretive and even false to her family and friends, being very alone in her thoughts, withholding facts from people who love her and deserve the right to protect her. She did what she could, alone, and put herself in so much danger for the sake of going on to solving the case- bringing justice to a past friend and his family for a school assignment... 😢my take on all of this, is that a dark force influences people. Even good people- but how far do they let it influence them??? Like Pip, she is acting on her own. She is almost praying for help at times but doesn’t know that she can actually send up a prayer to God, the One True Most High God who has good angels at his bec & call - to step in and help her, ✅if she were a real person and not just a fictional character. Jesus name does hold power!!! I believe she was justified in the book to take down her killer- he was not going to stop until she was dead, silenced, so she had to. The police wouldn’t listen or act. But she did not have to set up the rapist - lie , deceive and bring Ravi into it. I know there was a better way for her. But on her own she could not come up with it. A bittersweet ending for Pip because she now has to carry this darkness with her in her soul, for her crimes. The end does not justify the means.

I know you posted this video a year ago, but I just finished the book the other day, and it was a crushing disappointment for me. The turn that the book took in part 2 made me angry. I only finished the book because I hoped Holly Jackson would find a way to redeem it, but she didn't. It's a terrible ending to a series that I'd loved.

I loved the first two books and couldn't even finish the third book. It was too long/drawn out and felt so different in the worst way. Also, I totally agree that the book has so many unfinished instances that were brought up. I think the BBC series will be good regardless, but the third book read more like a script than a book.
