This is a great review, well done! Last few weeks I’ve been reading up on these Lauten drum mics. On the snare mic I’ve been reading it sounds dull/not exciting. And with this review, I can see what they mean. It’s fairly bland and needs processing to get that crisp top end. Excitement needs to come from the 57. But I can’t understand why there isn’t much rave about these tom mics. They seem to sound amazing. Even before processing. Especially how the cymbals translate on there. I’m really close to ordering a few of these. But they’re not cheap.

Not saying the snare mic sounds bad. I would still be curious how it would sound.

The snare mic is in my opinion exactly as you describe. Full range but not exciting. It takes EQ well but paired with a beta 57 it’s pure magic! I cannot speak highly enough of the Tom mics though. They are amazing.

I’m very enamoured with the Snare Mic on snare and the LS-308 on floor Tom. But getting very keen on the Tom Mic! Trouble is: gonna need 6 of the buggers!

@@OliverShillito thanks for the vote, man! Useful real feedback for the dude about to shell out 3K for mics!

The snare mic has some of the best bleed rejection of any on the market. Worth it just for that, particularly for drummers who love to have their hihats right over their snares.

Have you had any experience with the Josephson e22s models? I have a pair that I use on toms and it's the best sound I've gotten, but I have been interested in moving those to pick up these Lauten Tom Mics. Something about having almost 3k worth of mics on my toms that seems like overkill, haha, even though I love them.

I’ve wanted Josephsons for years. Never seen them in person but have worked with raw Tom tracks recorded with them so I am familiar with how they sound. I have to say, Lauten told me that the Tom mic would compete with the Josephson and from what I can tell. They are not wrong. Incredible mics! I’d say maybe try and get a loan pair and try them out to see if they work for you!

@@OliverShillito thanks for the quick reply! From what you can recall working with the Josephson tracks, was the bleed level comparable? I had a pair of DM20s that I put to the test, and while they sounded great, the Josephsons won hands down in the bleed department, so I moved on from them. These Lautens seem like they could do the trick.

I think after listening to how it sounds on toms through Adam "Nolly" Getgood, those mics sound great, but not everyone can drop $3000+ for two or more mics while the Lauten Audio Tom Mic is roughly the price of a new Sennheiser MD421 II
