So here I am in England in 2023, watching Australian TV idents from the 70’s 😂. Logo 7, the 1978-81 theme, uses the same tune as a programme called Superstars, that was on British tv for years! The tune itself is called Heavy Action by Johnny Pearson. One of those ‘library tunes’ that could be used for anything for a fee. 3:45 th-cam.com/video/VvuBx7iwD0U/w-d-xo.html
I love seeing a bit of Australian television history covered and the ABC is definitely the big one when it comes to enjoyment with its program choices along with ABC Kids
The 2021 redo of the 10th logo is especially for airing of The Newsreader. The dedication to transporting viewers back to the show's era is so lovely. 💖
Great ident history of ABC (Australia), Jonty! Australia is such an amazing country! It has such amazing places such as the Sydney Opera House! And the idents from ABC (Australia) are really interesting! It's quite interesting to see that the Lissajous figure was used for almost 55 years! However, the 4th ident is the scariest ident from ABC (Australia), because of the animation, the fact that the entire logo is on a black background, and the creepy music. Or you might find the music very relaxing, depending on your opinion. Two favourite idents I would choose would be the 10th and 12th idents. The 12th ident being the best, because each variant has quite an relaxing feel into it, the animation is good, while simple, and the ident overall looks really nice. The music in the background is nice too, and it's quite interesting to see that the 3-note jingle for ABC (Australia) was used for almost 35 years!

I do enjoy that everyone on the planet just sounded that little bit more British back in the 1920s-late 80s especially in the 40s-50s and 60s. (I’m aware that Australians sound British anyway but even Americans sounded British back in the early 20th century) Also I’m impressed that Australia didn’t have colour television as mainstream until 2001. While I am aware there was some colour TV in Australia and in fact most of the western world even in the late 1940s, as a millennial who’s grown up in New Zealand having been born there I’ve only ever had colour TV, and it’s honestly mind blowing that black and white tv still existed in the 1990s or even the 1980s. Australia be living in 1981 while us New Zealanders are living in the year 2037. But I did get a lot of nostalgia from this as I had a lot of Australian shows on VHS tapes back in the early 2000s. Unfortunately I was born in 2001 so just barely missed out on the 90s, although arguably the early 2000s can be counted as an extension of the 90s right until the uprising of technology in 2006 onwards, but I still remember watching my old tapes of cartoons and other stuff and being completely captivated by the old logos and ads for shows and movies released 30 years before. Also that 90s ident with the didgeridoo and the early 2000s one with the drag racing cars are the two most Australian idents in this entire compilation.
Aussie here, nah colour TV was mainstream since 1975. You’re thinking of digital TV, that was introduced in 2001, and analog TV was discontinued in 2013.
The late 60's ident has an odd mix of "high tech" with the oscilloscope waves and "dreamy" with the animation combined with the harp and celesta tune that might not sit well with some. But overall, a fondly recalled classic and demonstrates what the ABC logo was supposed to represent in the first place.
ABC Australia (Australian Broadcasting Commission/Australian Broadcasting Corporation) can compete with other rival Australian TV networks/media broadcasting companies such as Seven Network Australia (Seven West Media, Ltd.), Network 10 Australia (Ten Network Holdings/Paramount Networks UK & Australia (Paramount Global)), Nine Network Australia (Nine Entertainment, Co. Holdings Pty Ltd.), SBS Australia (Special Broadcasting Service) and Sky News Australia (Australian News Channel (News Corp Australia)).
I like the current set of ABC idents! It really harkens back to the 1988-1994 period when they had the ABC Lissajous curve logo over contrasting backgrounds with a theme.
@JontyMaster can you upload NBN Television idents including the Wednesday one from 2004 from my video camera thats on my TH-cam channel called NBN Television Newcastle Commercials 10th March 2004 please?
Not to be confused with ABC America (American Broadcasting Company/Disney Entertainment Group (The Walt Disney Company)) in the United States Of America/North America and ABC 5/TV5 Philippines (Associated Broadcasting Corporation and Associated Broadcasting Company/ABC Development Corporation now known as TV5 Network, Inc.) in the Philippines of Southeast Asia/Asia-Pacific Region.
the ABC is far more similar to the BBC in the UK. It works as a single entity and broadcasts across the entire country, whereas PBS is more a localised, station to station thing. But all three do share in the fact they’re non-profits (government-funded in the case of ABC) that aim to bring free and accessible access to high quality programming to any and everyone.
My favourite ABC ident is the one most of their DVDs have (used up until 2019 where they replaced it with a similar, simpler one which I still think is really elegant) with the blue and pink liquid forming the curve, with the serene guitar tone. It’s iconic, it’s simple and it’s both relaxing and intriguing.

I see where Westcountry got inspiration for their idents
Most of the 12th logos are too heavenly for my ears...
