Mage is the class that I am the most comfortable with, plus the fantasy and the playstyle fits to me. So no matter how their numbers look like, I will always be a Mage, even I suck, enjoy playing the class way too much to change it. just turn off the damage addon and visually satisfy your eyes with arcane, fire and frost spells :D
I was in the same boat, started this exp with fire mage, quickly realized in delves 8 that I was struggling and changed to sunfury arcane and it was better, then they did the buff to spellslinger so changed to that and it was even more fun, so my best advice is firstly play what class you want, but don't be afraid of testing the other specs (if you have it) that is performing better to see if you like it.
While I do agree, I don't find it fun to feel like I have to work my ass off and play out of my mind only to manage sub par DPS and then feel like I'm dragging down the raid because of it. There will almost always be at least AN option for me though so for example Arcane feels a bit bad to play (for me) so I've started playing Frost a bit more and am enjoying it but also doing good damage. I can't speak for everyone but I think its a balance between fun and still performing well.
also Skill > Meta. As a main demo lock, who is currently in the sh*ts according to the Tier lists, I cannot count anymore how many better equiped but unexperienced arcan mages or elemental shamans I outperformed while also doing mechanics (they didn't)
Post nerf I’m still out performing our flavor of the month arcane mage player as a fire mage, Marcellian has got the right idea. Flavor of the monthers imo often don’t have the muscle memory to perform in the content they’re trying to be meta for
This exact statement is why i try to argue against "the meta" Even Flame seems to thing META means "best" when in reality META is a calculation of raw damage output in a perfect scenario (for DPS at least) I keep trying to remind people that the game director himself came out a few Xpacs ago talking about Frost Mage and how the community wrote it off as bad. Ion literally said, "There are not enough people playing Frost for the numbers ( meta) to be accurate." After this interview, people dove into Frost, and WHAT DO YOU KNOW? Everyone saw how good Frost could be. META is a joke and destroys Warcraft/ MMO communities.
I recently swapped to Arcane and I’ve been having an absolute blast (excuse the pun). It’s flashy, fun and feels really good when you perform your rotation correctly, adding depth to your game. I’ve always been a Frost mate at heart but playing Arcane feels so refreshing to me right now. Always love the channel guys, keep up the good work.
Fire spec is more fun to me because most of the dmg is flat dmg, which is more dependent on the gear you have than the other specs that is WAY WAAAY more forgiving than fire. Arc: you have consistent dmg output no matter what plus 20s stack with AB singlehandedly carrys a lot of lacking gear, all you need to learn is mana management since arc is the only spec that makes you go oom but if you have a good rotation the spec pretty much plays for you since you channel cast 40% of the time on bosses and dungeons. Frost: If you are more the CD player and press them at the right moment type of playstyle, still has the best defenses of all specs but also became very gear dependent like fire. Since you really have to sweat a lot to get a good use of your main dmg spells/procs. So Frost is still more forgiving than fire, considering the greater defense spells which also plays a part of you as a dps as well and the quality of your raid/group. BUT also frost is very tricky to balance since it's still THE PvP spec which also affects PvE to some extend.
I will be always a Resto shaman main, even with stressful spiky damage nowadays. By now feeling the diva popularity among the building teams in every content 😆.
i am so glad i am not maining mage anymore, this class is getting tuned into rdm tiers from week to week for ages, it's a great alt class vut never ever again will main it.
I recently swapped from playing evoker(all 3 specs in various content) back to my monk mainly because my group wouldn't cooperate with evoker healing. I don't regret it.
My fun is to play the best dps spec and do the end content as m+ or mythic raid. However, poor balance and uncertainty of nerfs & cost/time required to gear up another main makes me really sad. Ex. I switch from arcane mage to ele. shaman. It took me hours to grind the gear to the same level, but ele. was nerfed again even before I can have fun.
The pain of this really is the second they change the entire playstyle of a main spec and just make it no fun at all. With current iteration of frost mage, I'd rather do subpar DPS on arcane or fire than play frost at all, on what used to be the most fun I've had in the game in years. The most important factor, like you said, is just enjoying it, so I'm in the process of packing up my Frost and figuring out what to do now, and nothing is sticking like it used to. Time to chase meta in the meantime...
ty for pointing out how bullshit the wowhead posting of "fire is incredible" was. like you said, it was a couple players getting fed PI's and massively inflating the spec's performance
The funny thing is, I normally main an Arcane Mage and just rolled a Dracthyr Mage and the rotation changed so much I was thinking about swapping to Fire Mage. But maybe Ill hang with Arcane for a bit, I just need to learn the new rotation at low levels. Arcane Missles seems to never proc?
Well, I switched to Destruction, I’ve been maining demonology for several expansions, because of all the movement needed and the cc/bumps/pools from mobs. It was just too punishing for demonology now that we need to cast a lot compared to previous expansions. I miss all my demonic cores procs.
A decade ago, i was a meta chaser too, and it burnt me out so much I nearly quit gaming completely. I play this game to have fun now, and that often means playing a subpar class and spec. I get that a lot of people find doing fat deeps and chasing the meta fun, and that is also fine. At the end of the day, this is a game. Why would you play a game in a way you dont find fun? Just try to keep in mind that fun is subjective. Hell, I levelled a Gnome using only pet battles once. Was it slow? Yes. Sure was a fun change of pace, though.
Fire has been insane for seasons. They don't know how to make fire single target good without making it the hands down best spec for everything in the game. Fire was bottom at the start of the expansion, got buffs and rocketed to the top and then got nerfed back down. This just makes sense from Blizzards perspective. Let fire rot for a season. It's fine.
i had the same with outlaw, loved it to bits from legion to dragonflight. now they removed acrobatic strikes. And it just feels awfull to play. But just go sin ? i know about uncapped kingsbane and the whole fun of trying to minmax it. Gone now hardcapped. Sin is energy starved most of the time which i think is not fun compared to outlaw. I just gave up on it last week.
I have been Arcane since the start of WOTLK, raided and PVP ALL the way through, never have I been this excited for a tier set as I am for me and my army of mirror images to dominate with the T-12. Having Arcane Power make my spells cheaper instead of more expensive, WHAT? This phase of classic is going to be BONKERS. Once your gear score hits 9850, the amount of mana and spell power I have now allows the rotation to FINALLY flex like it did in The Frozen Throne, I'm about to FFFFF these meters up! For people who DO NOT KNOW, throughout Cataclysm, our spell power number, and total mana pool will grow, to a point on a bell curve where it SPARKS to life like you never seen. I am in Infernos dropping 50k single target on bosses right now. When spell power numbers can only max out at 7k, and the most haste and mastery you can have while hit capped is gimped at the START of the expansion, FIRE COMPLETELY DOMINATES the bell curve there. What you are about to see is Arcane mages SKYROCKETING. Spell power for the average mage is getting near 10k, while capped, mastery is going over 20% now with this gear, Firelands level gear also gets mages to 130k mana pools. At that point Arcane Mages RISE past everyone else, every time. The thing is the rotation takes ALOT more thinking during the fight than fire, works COMPLETELY differently, and the T-12 set is good for them too, so I don't see TOO many mages making the change. The mana float phase of the rotation is NOT easy for everyone.
The problem I'm running into playing resto shaman is almost everyone is playing resto shaman whether it be a main or end game geared alt (due to supposed meta). It's been significantly more difficult to find an AOTC or Mythic raiding guild playing resto. This is the other side of the meta (I've achieved KSH and AOTC on my resto shaman through pugging, but no guild)
Ive been a mage main since i started in cata. Blizzard has absolutely no idea what to do with mage anymore. we get several reworks each expansion now because they cant figure out what to do. Fire is back to pre legion level power where its just bad. The frost talent tree is just bad and suffers from insane proc bloat. Arcane lost pretty all their burst and shifted it into aoe. I really dont like what theyve done to all 3 specs
My first experience with the nerf-bat was way back in EQ. They did Bard kiting dirty and that greatly reduced my interest in the game. As for WoW, it is a 20-year-old game, yet retail may as well be beta... It gets tiresome having the rug pulled out from under your spec.
Man I cant change BM. I love so much but the class is in a very stupidly weird spot! Pumping in raids but shitting in mythics?!!? I think the damage is there but a buff for damage out of call of the wilds can be done.
Change main when in solo content, like mithic plus, u cant find no one who group you because u are not the meta dps. This game need a huge fix about that.
Still playing fire in M+, just with my friends. In raids its imposible to play fire, no matter how good could i be. It so freaking frustrating because we were being buffed slightly patch after patch until we found the sweet spot where you are not meta, but you aren't trash. Then the nerf hammer happened... BTW i keep saying that the obsession of devs to make lit fuse work is because they putted so much work and time in that part of the tree that if it isn't used or thrown to the garbage somebody is going to be fired.
I’m an ele shaman main but I don’t like all the recent changes as a new player. I don’t know why they’d experiment like this in the middle of the season. At least wait for the new season. Been having fun as ret pally lately. Considered fire mage too but god it’s weak af

Brew is weird at this point and I don't doubt it's in a shit bucket of its own, can't speak much to it, but was never a fan of tanks being squishy and having mucho dmg
As a long time Fire main this is nothing new. Every expansion people pop over to Arcane when it is 'meta'. I beat them as fire because i know and love the spec. Then when arcane gets nerfed they all leave and i just laugh at them

Bro what arcane buff, arcane is completely dismembered, feels so bad to play and performance is trash, so ty blizzard for making people invest time into a spec and then to have to basically stop playing it.
