my wife has a dart board of you lol. but really the intro music on this video is so excellent. what you and bella are creating together has really gone to another level. im a huge fan.
I'm going to be in the box for a while yet, but when I can afford to start building a hardware collection this is a name I'll remember! Even through my stock iPhone earbuds, the changes came through clearly. I'm going to have to watch this again through my studio monitors! A beautiful tone on this thing, and it looks so friendly to use. Again, a great demo, David; you could bottle your enthusiasm! Thanks for putting in the time on this one.
Ive had my eye on this unit since they introduced it. Im definitely copping one of these now. Thanks for displaying this product. There's not a lot of content on it yet and I truly believe people are gonna fall in love with The Bishop. Bless up!
After following for so long I learned Bella's voice well (also good to have the same reference across all the units you test) and that preamp sound really big and thick, wow. Love the compressor too, thanks to both of you!
Wow, mix ready straight off the bat. Very solid controlled sound obtained by the fitting harmonic saturation to fill out making the compression more finished sounding... so smooth. It's not so coloured that it wouldn't fit a wide variety of vocals also. Then the preamp is at the same level, such a no brainer for a channel strip. I may be sold
I been on the fence about this one after I got the empress im a fan of gainlabs. I really wanted to hear the drive saturation though. the comp is very very interesting. I just picked up the SSL bus+. might have to see what gear I can sell to fund this purchase lol
The drive is only for the DI/inst input, a separate clip showing that will be on the channel in the next days but it's a sublte "thickener" is not a distortion type of drive.
How would you compare it, as a channel strip without eq, to Mike-e? That one has preamp and saturator/compressor as well. Is it cleaner? More versatile? Or less?
You will be pressed to find a better sounding preamp than this. If it was only a preamp, it would be worth the price. Only 2 other companies (that we know of) build the preamp in a similar way and you would pay 3x the price.
That preamp is THICK and it sounds amazing on Bella's voice.. or Bella's voice sounds amazing on basically anything ahah but you know what I mean. Thank you for the video!
Very few channel strip compare to the Bishop. The Bishop preamp is one of THEE best sounding preamps I've ever heard. Big and open and clean with a subtle tube color, that is unless you switch to high gain. At that point you really hear what a high quality tube preamp can do when pushed. Only two companies build their pre like this. The compressor is so good they made a standalone version of it. And the dynamic AIR band.. I still don't understand how they did it. The Neve is great too, but you can't even compare it. Clean VCA comp vs a dual stage tube opto, a discrete eq that is a plus if you need a full eq in your strip but other than that, sorry no comparison with the pre.
Bro! The tone of that preamp alone is just rediculous!!! And I really dig that second compressor band. I'm about to wrap-up a mix where the top of the bass gave me HELL! And I'm curious as to what your opinion is about the differences between its "Air" and the Maag's (other than the selectable frequencies available)? Excellent demonstration man! 👊
It's something special for sure. The air band is different from MAAG, is much more similar to the highest setting on the Empress (I have multiple videos and one comparison) also due to the same transformer used in the output. But on this both freq are higher than you find on the Empress which sometimes can be a bit too much color, this one very rarely will be, especially at 30K it's just bliss. 20K when it's right adds not just top end but clarity on the entire high mid range. MAAG is cleaner, very modern/pop is "that" sound
Oh. Right on! I will check those out. Also, my next purchase is going to be a 500 rack. And I was thinking about getting the SSL-G Comp as my first unit, but I've heard nothing but awesomeness regarding the NG Bus Comp. Which one would you prefer for hard rock/metal? I ask you these questions because I highly value your opinion. Thanks for everything man.
Hello David. I have a question : why are you doing this to me ? Tell me ! Lately you stopped making videos of analog gear and talked mainly about plugins. I don't care about plugins, so I wasn't looking at the videos too much. Each time you do videos of analog gear, I bought the gear almost every time, except for the Fairchild clone that is out of my league. So lately it was cool for me, no more expenses since plugins are not for me. And now you are doing this lovely video on the Bishop that I was telling myself not to buy, since I already have the Dictator and the Empress. That's not fair David, you shouldn't do things like that, especially if the gear sounds very good. How am I supposed to buy this ? And as you rightly said : we need two of them to be really happy 🙂 Anyway, as usual you rock my friend, and your videos are appealing and addictive. Bravo Monsieur 👋👋👋
@@WhiteHeatify The Dictator is lovely and adds a nice color, it's smooth and I like it very much. There is now a version which isn't a stereo box but 2 mono channels, and this might be cool if you put it through a SSL Fusion you could do MS compressing. There is a problem with the Dictator though in my opinion, there is no output level, and that's a big problem, because if you want to crank the input level to get a lot of color, you have no output level to attenuate, and I regret that this lovely Gainlab company didn't think about it. Other than that I love the Dictator very much 😀
@@mixbustv Maybe I wasn't clear. I don't just want to hear different settings as separate segments. I prefer to see a demo where the dials are moved in real time so we can hear the gradual changes as the sound is dialed in. You do this later in the video, but not on Bella's vocals. I get the feeling the threshold and slope dials are best adjusted simultaneously to nail a setting that gives the most body to the voice (something one can do with analog gear that can't easily be done in a plugin).
Comparable? The VoxBox is 5.5K! This is literally half the price and while the VB has other functions and it's a great unit, I prefer this, especially the compressor.
Oh man, don't even think about it. The Bishop should cost twice and it's by far one of the best sounding preamps/strip ever. The preamp alone is something very, very special. You will tell me.
looking to buy one or the other right now, already have dictator and empress. doing mostly rap vocals. jpsephen c716 is alittle bright with my tree audio branch. what you think? biship or spl with transformers?
The bishop preamp would be perfect but not so much the opto comp for rap vocals. The SPL is federally clean regardless the transformer. If you want a channel strip I would probably go with the API but the best would be to split and get be there at 5:12 or I need pre-amp and either an 1176 or a distressor for comp
@@mixbustv I have been using a tree audio branch. Not mad at that opto comp for a tracking comp. Seems the bishop would actually give me some release options atleast

would really fit the Maag EQ
The air on the acoustic after comp is so sweet.
Work of Audio Art..... That comp section... wow...
Such a beautiful sound😊 the guitar sounded amazing. The piano, bass sound just wow - the voice is so natural.
Smooth as silk. What a great achievement for an all tube design.
This one is a troublemaker, very well designed you were right about needed/wanting two!
Wow sounds increadible and that compressor is so smooth!
I’m not (yet) a tech person. But I would love to grow with this product. And… Bellas song skill is really something! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you!
Sounds so good, watched the whole play.
Attack and Release sounded perfect on piano

This is one of those units where the bypass switch should be labelled with the ☹ emoji
😆 true
**** that sounds so damn good and smooth. (Listening on iPhone 13)
Can you make another video comparing this preamp with the preamp of an audio interface for vocals to see how big is the difference in sound quality?
i think for drums the 1970 drawmer is the best! i don't know if i can do the same with the 1978... I think Bishop unit is for Bass.
Wow David awesome peace of gear

Yeah they all do after me lol
@@mixbustv I had to check but yes, you did beat his video by 12 days.

great, thanks!..and how sounds the drive section?
Drive section is for instruments input only, a short separate clip will follow but it's not distortion territory, is thickness for the DI
Would have liked to have seen real-time adjustments on the compressor during the vocals so we could hear how each control changes the sound.

Valhalla Vintage Verb and Repeater delay
Could I add a tube mic to this or is that too much..?
We use this with 251 and C800

Dude you need to review diyre ( diy recording equipment)
Tell them
1176/LA2A trick style but why did they choose to invert the order?
The only time I saw that is that they track with a 2A otherwise, it makes little sense to me
