HOW TO USE WAKI GATAME (JUJUTSU LOCK) FOR SELF DEFENSE: Ninjutsu Martial Arts Training Techniques

  • Waki Gatame (腋固) is a jujutsu lock. It is one of the strongest locks in the Ninja Self Defense syllabus as it puts the whole weight of the body on one joint: the elbow. The technique requires decisive, swift motions- as a stronger opponent will be able to avoid it if it's not done quickly.
    .
Waki Gatame is shortened from Ude-Hishigi Waki-Gatame (腕挫腋固). This lock is very common when training in Traditional Japanese Jujutsu. This lock is also one of the main Kansetsu-waza (Joint locks) found in Judo, and is also used as part of the Ne-Waza (Grappling) curriculum of both Jujutsu and Judo Martial Arts Training.
    .
To do Waki Gatame correctly for self defense, you need to make sure you get the outside of the opponents arm, placing their arm under your arm, as you apply pressure to the elbow joint. When you learn the body movement, body angling as well as the Tai-Sabaki, Waki Gatame is a VERY effective technique that can be used for Ninjutsu Self Defense.
    .
In this video I demonstrate 3 techniques on how you can use Waki Gatame in a Self Defense Situation. The 3 Techniques that I demo are:
    (1) Move to outside, Elbow Strike, Waki Gatame Arm Lock, Elbow Strike, Then Evade.
    (2) Move to outside and lock with Waki Gatame Elbow Lock, 2 Elbow Strikes, then checking the arm down as I finish with a punch and evade.
    (3) Move to outside, Elbow Strike, Waki Gatame Joint Lock, Kick, then finishing with a punch before creating distance and evading.
    .
This lesson is directly for those training in the traditional Japanese martial arts and self-defense techniques of the ninja and samurai, such as ninjutsu (ninpo) and bujutsu (budo).

Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson; Headmistress of the Budo Ryu Kai (a.k.a Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo), is one of the most sought after instructors in the traditional and eclectic martial traditions. She is a member of the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame and is said to be the only non-Japanese to receive a Menkyo Kaiden (The highest level license that exist in Japanese martial arts) and Sokeship (inheritor / grandmaster) of a koryu bujutsu / ninjutsu tradition.
    .
In 2004 she wanted to bring back the tradition of Japanese Bujutsu, something that she felt has been lost in the modern world. To do this she established the Budo Ryu Kai, meaning School of the Warrior Way.
    .
The Budo Ryu Kai (Budo Ryu Ninjutsu) was developed by her personal research, training, experience, as well as the collection of seven Japanese warrior traditions (also called Nana Musha-den) and combining all of these facets into a way to fully develop one’s mind, body and spirit as one.
    .
Budo Ryu Ninjutsu is Soke Anshu Christa Jacobson's modern approach towards the study of ancient samurai & ninja warfare. The seven warrior arts that are taught within the Budo Ryu Kai are:
    .
    Koka Ryu Kempo (甲賀流拳法)
    Tenjin Ryū Jujutsu (天神流柔術)
    Tomo Ryu Shinobijutsu (戸猛流忍術)
    Eishin-ryū Iaijutsu (英信流居合術)
    Koto Ryu Koppojutsu (虎倒流骨法術)
    Gyokko-Ryū Kosshijutsu (玉虎流骨指術)
    Togakure-ryū Ninpo Taijutsu (戸隠流忍法体術)

2:21 Excellent technique. a. Step to the outside. b. Counter grab with right. (Cross-grab) _cross grab, pleas define_ c. Left elbow strike to jaw. d. Continue left strike down, to align with the right (cross-grab). e. Continue left elbow strikes to right temple until unconcious. Simple enough to understand. Thank you Soke.

I really appreciate how relaxed your sparring partner is, and must be for the demonstration. Perhaps a little too Hollywood in all that recoil, but he is as relaxed as he would need to be to demonstrate such a potentially dangerous technique. I like your selection of students and demonstrators. They have chosen not to be hard, but relaxed. Only one type of teacher can gain this level of relaxation, trust and cooperation from a student. A good one.
To the demonstrating student: Thank you. You read extremely well, and I am grateful for your participation in fleshing this technique.

Ninja Shizzle.. going into battle with secret skills, using black magic and weapons that enemies haven't seen and cannot defend against. Witchcraft & advanced martial arts, no wonder they built up such a badass reputation.
