  • This didn't come from a stream! It's piping hot fresh content made for TH-cam, I swear!
    I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
    Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.
    If you enjoyed the video, please consider hitting the Like button. It helps me out a lot!

      Part of the problem is that he doesn't have a solid base of openings (you should never think more than a few seconds on move 2... especially in blitz and bullet). Another part of it is is he recalculates too much. If you have a line in your head and your opponent plays the next move - then you need to be confident in your calculation and play the next move faster. It's not bad to check some moves, but NL does this all of the time.

    I think something for you to definitely cover in your next lesson with Levy is pawn pushes using these two games maybe as examples. Several occasions I think you overthought yourself about losing a pawn, when simply pushing it would have prevented it from being taken (see c4 at 36:50, this prevents it from being taken by the queen and frees up your queen to go do something else instead of guarding that pawn). I think in most cases it didn't matter so much, but it can save you a pawn or two which as you know matters a whole lot in endgames! Still absolutely pogged at the chess content

    At 3:02, there was a possible "fork" mentioned. But to avoid losing a piece (and form an attack), you could've gone pawn g3. If they forked, you could go Bf4 attacking their queen. They would be forced to either block with Bc6 or move their queen. If they block you trade and get rid of a powerful bishop, if they move the queen you could go Ne4 and bypass the fork/get central control. Maybe it would work, but Ne2 worked as well.

    minor issue, but could you move the eggcam over to the right so that we can see the notation? I keep looking away and then wanting to check what happened.

    Now, even though it's the correct advice, I feel like NL will get annoyed with all of the comments telling him to play a longer time control or with increments and therefore never do it.

    NL should start playing 15 min games

    • @Patchumz
      @Patchumz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More like blitz games because he obviously isn't learning time control from playing rapid. He needs to be forced to take less time not encouraged to take more time lol. Instead of 30 second to 5 minute spreads he'd be in 30 second to 8 minute spreads.

      But he takes time to make moves because he doesnt know the theory inside out. Playing bullet would just force him to play on instinct and probably lose a lot to silly mistakes that can be avoided in higher time controls.

    NL, this is a good rule of thumb to adhere by, but if your king is significantly safer than the opponent's then regardless of the material situation you should avoid queen trades.

    • @seanbailey8545
      @seanbailey8545 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Queen trades are fine if you up in material imo. Just depends if not trading would weaken your position or not.

    • @Waghabond
      @Waghabond 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seanbailey8545 my take is more along the lines of yes* if after the trade sequence you instantly enter an endgame where you are up a piece.
      If this is not the case then the rule is to not do it if your king is much safer (or do it if you king is much more unsafe).
      Just my take, picked the tip up from john bartholomew and nakamura

    all the stuff that's like after three moves he's threatening mate in 1, doesnt that just make it hes threatening mate in 4?

    • @benyeomans5848
      @benyeomans5848 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really, a threat of "mate in x" means that he's threatening a forced mating sequence that will take that many moves. If three moves beforehand there is no forced mate threat, but the potential to create one. It's something to watch out for, but they aren't threatening a mate in x yet
